Dec. 16, 2019 | Bobby Carter -- Many bands make considerable adjustments to their playing style in order for their sound to properly fill the Tiny Desk space. LA-based trio Moonchild, along with three background singers and a drummer, arrived promptly for their load-in time, unpacked their gear and were ready to go within minutes. Aside from being especially efficient, their natural musical instincts made for a custom fit in our corner.
Amber Navran, Max Bryk and Andris Mattson joined forces in 2012 at the University of Southern California and their debut album, Be Free soon followed. This year, they released their fourth album, Little Ghost, intricately meshing jazz, R&B and hip-hop sounds under Amber's subtle vocal feats.
For their set, they pulled out all the stops: flutes, flugelhorns, saxophones, keyboards, ukuleles and some the best harmonies I've heard in recent memory. From the moment Amber walked into the building and throughout the performance, she wore a smile on her face and expressed sincere gratitude for the Tiny Desk platform. She took advantage of the moment and amplified a cause near and dear to her heart. She asked us to "spend our privilege" and do more in the fight for people of color in the United States. They closed with a jam from 2017's Voyager.

A good sound mixer can make anything come true. A bunch of Louis Cole’s songs were recorded in (what I assume was) his house
Mint-Flavoured Sand ...it’s not the mixer,it’s the players...makes the mix engineers job easier when players know what they’re doing.
Just put this on some better speakers with a sub instead of just my phone. Loved it before. But with even decent audio it's 🤯🥴

Came across this by "accident" today while nursing a broken heart. Have no idea who these guys are but what a cool little eclectic group of beautiful people! I feel so happy for each one of them that they are doing their thing and sharing their gifts with the world. I am smiling inside and out watching theses talented cuties groove like they are...how could I not be?

I celebrate musicality. Moonchild has the chops, as Stevie Wonder would attest. Amber Navran and her bandmates exhibit a musicality--conception, composition, and performance--that adds another layer to the fabric of 21st century jazz. Flash, post-production, and promotion typically win the day. I can listen to Moonchild and celebrate musicality. I'm good.

I don't know, sometimes I like it better that way than being oversaturated..They doing well touring and stuff...Man, their music is so good!
It's so amazing that they all play multiple instruments and produce on their own albums! Some much in-house talent!
I was so lucky I could see them live exactly when I first discovered their music and I was so hyped. I was in a business trip, went to the concert on my own and after their concert I had the pleasure to meet them. Bought them a CD, they asked me lively if I wanted it signed and shared a nice talk and pics 🙂 they are so down to earth... They deserve more recognition...

I've seen this performance at least 60+ times (lost count lol) and never get tired of it. The amazing music and Amber's sweet voice and smile keeps me coming back for more.
