If any game actually deserves the term "Souls-like," it's this one.
· Endless cycle of light and dark that can be perpetuated by players unwittingly killing themselves.
· "Sacrifice yourself for nothing and don't realize it unless you pay attention the next time" ending.
· "Sacrifice yourself to break the cycle and everything is bittersweet forever" ending.
· NPCs who accompany you and inevitably die when you complete their storyline, with the exception of one NPC in one ending.
· Hollow Knight is Artorias
· Hornet is Solaire (but stylized like Ciaran)
· Dreamers are Four(rather Three) Kings
· You are no one.
· The owner of light is a tyrannical dickbag, darkness is neutral (if voracious), and both have awful effects on living things.
· The protagonist is a character who rose from dark to snuff out the light, but not in a shitty way.
· Benches are bonfires, trains and beetles replace bonfire warping.
· Central hub world with a mix of: nice characters who are never at risk of dying permanently, a few less than savory characters you could live without, and at least one questionable thief.
Top Kek It's the "give yourself to a bonfire and perpetuate the Age of Fire like Gwyn and Frampt tricked you into doing" ending in Souls and the "get corrupted by The Radiance after the final boss because you didn't complete the secret ending prerequisites" ending in Hollow Knight. Also the "Hornet dies" ending is more or less allowing Solaire to wear the sunlight maggot. Those are the bad endings, disguised to not look quite like bad endings.
Except the devs actually went on record to say that Zelda II was a bigger influence on Hollow Knight than Dark Souls, lol. From Software doesn't have a monopoly on unforgiving checkpoints and gothic narrative.
+Dmitry That might simply be because the gameplay styles are similar. This game still shares a lot of the stuff that made the Souls Series unique.
Dmitry Shcherbakov Zelda II isn't gothic horror in my opinion. It is unforgiving though. It's the story of Hollow Knight that makes this game very similar to Souls, and the very smooth environment-based way the story is conveyed (rather than Zelda's method of beating one over the head with heavy-handed dialogue). These aren't bad things, this game 100% deserves a positive usage of the term "souls-like."

You know, you one of those youtubers who post vids rarely and you wait for them forever, but those videos are so good that you just return to them over and over, while waiting for a new content upload. They are like good songs that you don't get tired of. And whenever there is nothing good in my subscription box I just go to your channel to rewatch some Momodo- oh, sorry, I mean, Boobborn I and II, or Crimson Souls, Undersouls, Doki Souls... you get the idea.
I guess, what I'm saying is - you are doing a great job, mate. I think it is an ultimate compliment to any artist, letting them know that your work became kind of immortal for somebody else and that it brought some joy in their life. And it really did.

Best advice I’ve seen for the radiance is to to focus on not taking damage over literally everything. Your lowest priority is to hit the boss. Only heal when your 100% sure you won’t be hit. And hope you don’t get screwed of over by rng. And having fought them I’d say it’s good advice

This was my 2017 GOTY, and I like to think I have played all of the heavy hitters. This was the one year that I jumped back into gaming with both feet. Nier, Nioh, Zelda BOTW, Prey, Mario Odyssey, PUBG, Cuphead, Resident Evil 7, Horizon, all made my top 10, but Hollow Knight easily tops that list. I would play it on my lunch at work, after work, I would wake up early to play it. Beating it any % took me over 30 hours, and it's the only game in recent memory I wanted to 100%. The art style grew on me like mushrooms, and by the end of the game, I was completely enthralled in the world they created. The interconnected levels were phenomenal, and I have never played a 2d game with such precise and fluid controls. Every death felt like MY fault, not the game's. And I died a LOT. But I never even considered giving up, because winning that tough boss fight was more rewarding than anything else. I don't even really like Metroidvania games, but if the genre can sustain the level of excellence that Hollow Knight achieved, I will definitely come back to the genre
I think Cuphead may actually have objectively better and more technically impressive art direction, but I found the somber environment and muted tones in HK preferable and more impactful . I literally cannot think of enough adjectives or anecdotes to sing this game's praise. Even the music and sound design was top notch, where, even with your eyes closed, the intended mood is ALWAYS readily apparent. I was truly blown away, and feel like it actually made me evolve as a gamer. The ONLY game that I haven't tried that I think would make my list is A Hat In Time, which I suspect would dethrone Mario Odyssey, but even having not tried that, i KNOW based on my own genre preferences that it would not topple HK.

Hollow Knight is the epidemy of what I would want a Souls game to be as a Metroidvania. But the best thing about Hollow Knight is that it is it's own game. When I say that it is a Souls Like, i don't mean it copies Dark Souls to be popular, or for the sake of loving Dark Souls. No, Hollow Knight doesn't try to be Dark Souls. The comparisons lie in the way the world connects and interacts with its lore, in the emphasis on punishing death or boss runs, and in its incredible approach to difficulty(certainly better than DS2). To everyone who hates that people call Hollow Knight a Souls Like, it isn' an insult, or even saying it's a clone(the games play completely differently), it's a compliment and comparison intended to praise the strengths of both games.
