    I think the alien observing the photos thought the way to keep her subdued and in trance was to bring back her friend, in her mind. But, we were shown that although she felt sorrow it didn't work. She was able to see through the illusion and break it, freeing herself. Then in the woods, her clone stubs her, she kills the clone but instead of running away, she mourns. After they catch her, they are curious as to why the hypnosis did not work. As they observed what she had done, we again see her reach out to her young self as she begins to write letters to Maude. And then they knew. They couldn't imprison her because she was already a prisoner of the town she was leaving in. And they couldn't make her Alien because she was already alienated. So they realized she is already a part of their alien society. And there, with them, she was free.

    I think the point of the movie is very clear - No one will save you (but yourself). You need to forgive yourself in order to save yourself.
    I really loved this movie and I think the camera shooting is amazing. Playing a character with no dialogue is crazy and hard, and she nailed it.

      Ya she forgave herself through an illusion, then proceeded to dissociate herself from any other human being that had their lives ripped away by the invading species. Thus she lives guilt free by external validation through a fake body snatcher race. So the question is...did she have a mental breakdown living alone with guilt out in that old farm house and there really was "no aliens" or were there aliens, she got what she needed, and just decided.....Fuck It, I'm not gonna ask questions and just have illusionary fun for the rest of my days?
      What a weird ending. Kind of crappy actually.

    5:11 I got the opposite experience for this one. For me, when the creature has a terrifying design or presence and their motives remains unknown, making it lingers around longer makes it more horrifying imo. Because generally we dont expect something that wanna scare us will walk around calmly. But in this alien case it works because they're not here to play peekaboo. So they literally dont need to stay in the dark like ghost or the boogeyman. Honestly, it works for me.

    • @Kaipyro67ALT
      @Kaipyro67ALT Před 8 měsíci +3

      It's not about the creature staying in the dark, it's about keeping them obscured from the audience. You can make a scary looking monster, but the scariest monster of all is our imaginations-- that's why most horror movies keep the monster obscured or out of focus or in shadow for the most part. That's what Chris was referring to.

    • @dylanfrey9478
      @dylanfrey9478 Před 8 měsíci +4

      @@Kaipyro67ALTYeah, I think they get what he was saying, I think they simply disagree. And I kind of agree with that disagreement lol. Sure, you’re OFTEN correct, and our imagination is the scariest monster, but that’s not an across the board rule. Make a good enough looking monster and it’s presence on the screen can be almost unbearable, and WAY more terrifying than what the average viewer can come up with (no offense to anyone with an average imagination). And even if you agree with Chris wholeheartedly on this, you can’t deny that the “obscured-in-the-shadows” type of monster has been done already… like a lot. I’m not saying it’s not effective, but this movie chose to be it’s own thing and I applaud that, wherever I see it. Plus, like OP said, these aliens aren’t exactly fucking around, clicking and screeching in the dark like those weirdo Signs aliens, I dunno if it would have worked as well with this movie.

      For me, sometimes showing the “monster” or “ghost/demon” in a horror movie would lose the eerie factor. The first Insidious, for example, had me creeped out until they showed more of the demon, who looked like Darth Maul to me. Lol It’s still an overall creepy movie, so I’m not taking anything away from that. Regardless, I think it’s all about execution. If you’re going to show the “demon/ghost” or “monster,” build suspense and tension to finally reveal the “antagonist.” Which I’ll give Insidious that. And this movie did that by building it up to finally reveal the first alien clearly as well. But to your point, seeing the aliens as much as we did is the right move for this type of movie.

      The "less you know the scarier it is" trope is lazy writing to me. It allows you to do almost anything you want out of plot convenience and not out of good character development. For years people kept saying they like Halloween because of the mystery of Michael Myers. And look what happened at the end of that franchise. All the lack of character development ended up painting themselves into a corner for the finale all because they didn't have and REAL lore around who Myers was. For years it was "he's just too evil to die". And they ended up disappointing fans by making him just a regular man after all. Then they try to give us the "see, he IS all damaged and broken down in his old age". But none of that explains how he was able to survive being shot twice in the head , dropped from a window, hit by cars, stabbed, set on fire. All because they wanted to be mysterious they ended up choking on their own continuity.

    I have mixed feelings about the film. It's very thought provoking, I enjoyed the suspense, and I thought Brynn was pretty badass. The actress did a fantastic job despite having few lines, and I don't think the silence took away from the movie. I felt conflicted by the end because although I can appreciate the metaphors, I found it confusing when thinking about it more literally. I get the killing her clone metaphor, but why did the aliens make that and send it after her seemingly to kill her? Why are they suddenly peaceful towards her after learning of her trauma?
    Why do they enslave everyone except for Brynn? The whole "they relate to her being different" thing doesn't make sense to me. Why would she be worthy of living and being happy while no one else is in the entire town? And why is Brynn so happy to have her friends be fake husks of people? I feel like she'd have to be pretty evil to enjoy that. I'm very conflicted about it. i don't think it deserves the amount of bad reviews it's gotten, but I wouldn't say I fully loved it either.

    I like how the Greys didn’t dispose of her once they found out she couldn’t be controlled. Especially since she dispatched like 3 of them. But here, the Greys held no grudge or animosity towards her, we see the aliens have a sense of understanding or morality perhaps and let her be free. Brynn was able to forgive herself to where she didn’t have to fight back anymore. She was basically alienated half of her life, so the Greys understood she could co exist among them. It goes to show the aliens aren’t truly evil. It could also possibly be the Greys themselves being controlled by the squid parasites since it shows the squid reverberating in their throats as well. The parasites are possibly the TRUE masters behind the invasion. And they utilized Grey technology to help spread themselves. And by the ending we saw, it seems like the Greys/parasites are changing the world into a “perfect society”, perhaps to heal the planet after we caused so much harm. The captured humans would be trapped in their minds but they would live their life as if nothing happened as the parasites are feeding them a false reality (they wouldn’t be suffering). The whole ending gives off Invasion of the Body Snatcher vibes. As well as The Host by Stephenie Meyer. But this movie leans more towards The Host because in the book, they are peaceful parasitic aliens that invaded worlds that were on the brink of destroying themselves. So they stepped in and took over to help save the planet and breed a new generation of the races that occupied the planets and teach them to take better care of their planet and each other.

    This film was different and the storyline was refreshing. Two tropes often used individually, put into one. On one hand, you have aliens trying to take over earth/humanity. Then you have a girl who's committed a horrible crime and is on a journey to overcome her past mistakes. So odd together, but it works. I was captivated the entire time. And the cinematography was amazing.

      I just watched the movie - well - I quit after 48 minutes. Behavior of the protagonist is just not believable. When she walked into the police station - why did she just walk out? I get she had some sort of anxiety attack from the "spit attack" - but one would think almost getting murdered by an alien would trump that feeling. Or at least - after leaving the station - making another shot at it.
      And on the bus. That escape was a little bit "too easy"? The alien-possessed was agile and fast inside the bus - but as soon as she gets outside - they just give up?
      Also - why did nobody on the bus not utter a single word?
      Where they all possessed? Even the driver?
      If the driver was NOT possessed why did the alien-possessed on the bus not attack him?
      And how did she conjure up the cap and the sunglasses she was wearing on the bus?
      Also - she has a land line only?? No cell phone? (yet she runs an "online business" or something similar)
      I was seriously considering if she was suffering from autism and was dealing with serious social anxiety - but her behavior does not match (she has no problem looking people in the eyes, etc).
      I got nothing against sci-fi and fantasy movies - but when behavior and internal logic makes no sense - I see little point in continue watching.

    The morality bait and switch ending is random to say the least. There's a reason Brynn is an oucast who lives as a hermit. She murdered her best friend, intentional or not and we don't really see the other viewpoint explored much. Is the film some sort of social commentary on murderers and rehabilitation? At the end of it all Brynn chooses the selfish option and smiles whilst humanity gets taken over by aliens. She double downs on her refusal to acknowledge and process the finality of her actions. She betrays her species simply because the invaders give her a moment's respite. That's pretty dark regardless of the song and dance we see on screen. It's a very confusing ending as it just comes off too absurd. For me the aliens use Brynn's greatest weakness against her which is emotional distress. It was never about discovering anything deeper or 'special' within her, it was just a means to assimilate another pesky human. It goes with the whole scanning business they were so fond of to determine humanity's strengths and weaknessses.

      Wrong. You dont understand the point of the movie. She did killed her bestfriend by accident as they were fighting when they were young leading to her being an outcast (alienated) from society. She carries that burden even shes grown up and we can see shes sorry as she frequently sends letters and says about how she misses her etc. And you can see it as the movie goes specially when the alien spider is in her she resisted it and keeps saying thats shes sorry until fast forward she finally was taken and as the aliens dig her mind she also confronted her bestfriend at the table scene and ultimately let go of that burden and forgiven herself thinking that was the end for her but the aliens also saw her suffering and situation and thinks she isnt a threat as she was already alienated from society leading her to be release. She didnt betray anyone. The smile at the end is shes celebrating her freedom and fresh start and gone along with the aliens that treated her better than the humans before.

    *SPOILER* I enjoyed the movie. Yes, showing the aliens less would have definitely upped the horror but I still felt plenty of suspense throughout, and enjoyed that I didn’t know where it was going. I personally felt a lot of sympathy for our protagonist. When i realised that Maude was 12 from the tombstone, i immediately started to wonder what a 12 year old could have done that is so unforgivable that the whole town, everyone, treats her so poorly and such disdain. When we eventually found out what happened, i felt so sorry for her. She was a 12 year old, who obviously felt very threatened at the time and reacted completely from emotion and not thought, and immediately felt remorse. Yes what she did was terrible, and just so unfortunate but her sorrow, her guilt, shame, and remorse really made me believe that she didn’t need to be treated the way she was, especially as someone who had lost their mother, was living alone, and we can only assume has been isolated since that experience for what we can assume has been a couple of years.
    This movie touched on themes of forgiveness, trauma, and weaponising grief without considering one’s humanity. Our protagonist’s action to the incident was an unfortunate, albeit immensely human (we are flawed), response. The fact that she was given an opportunity to forgive herself, I assume everyone in the town was given an opportunity to see that situation again and whether they would respond in the same spiteful manner they had shown our protagonist over the course of film / another incident that played on similar themes of humanity.
    She decided to see the humanity in herself and essentially save herself because no one else was going to. Her looking for forgiveness from the town’s people in order to forgive herself is alien,it’s foreign, it’s not real. When we met her she was essentially the town’s people at the end - false smiles masking the trauma that lied underneath. She can now go on with life having forgiven herself and essentially live a life that’s all smiles on top masking a lot of trauma beneath.
    Worth a watch, and I think a great spooky season watch.

    OMG i really LOVED IT!
    Signs + Nope + Panic Room
    This movie has it all. The only think i felt at the end was a bittersweet feeling that I REALLY WANTED MORE. I wanted more of her and the backstory of the aliens and others perspectives about what was happening on Earth.
    I was terrified imagining myself in that situation. Altough Chris didn't like very much the fact the aliens were not a mistery from the beggining, poping up at the screen everytime, I loved it because it's different from all the other movies where they try to hide something we already know, the entire movie. WE WANT TO SEE IT, and imagine ourselves in that situation looking at something that weird and terrifiying.
    I also love the fact they were able to merge drama with an alien invasion science fiction so perfecly. I truly felt for her. 11/10.
    Favorite alien movie of all time! Will for sure become a classic in the future.
    The alien CGI could've been better in the scenes inside the house, though. 🤔

    This movie was way better than Signs, but for those of you who didn't understand the ending.
    SPOILER WARNING!
    So after the aliens looked into Brynn’s memory of the guilt she's been stuck with, they all agree that they found something special in Brynn, the aliens let her go and Brynn lives a happy life like she has always wanted with the aliens taking over the humans in her town.
    In the end, no one in town saved Brynn, she saved herself from the aliens and her past guilt. Instead of humans, the aliens save Brynn and let her live the life she has always wanted.

    • @gregbuster4187
      @gregbuster4187 Před 8 měsíci +8

      @@chaburchak Somewhat, but not entirely. I believe the aliens were initially impressed by the way she fought against them. No matter how many times she was chased, cornered and attacked, she consistently survived. The aliens were perplexed as far as what to do with her. After a brief discussion, they turned to what was basically a supervisor who seemed to have the final authority. I believe whoever was in charge was the one who empathized with Brynn’s past trauma and resultant guilt. In the end, I believe she was rewarded for both her fighting skills and her past.

      The ending was basically a recreation of brynns table with the houses and buildings and all the people, brynn just wanted to fit in and wanted people to like her, but because she killed her friend, she was all alone and the town was basically against her, in the end, she ended up happy finally feeling like she belonged with a bunch of friends, the aliens helped her.

    Went into this film blind and had a blast with it. I was thinking more along the lines of classic Twilight Zone than Signs while watching it, right down to the ending and how it's shot. I honestly loved the spin on the grey alien design, too, especially with the way they communicated. I actually think having the aliens in full view worked in this movie's favor because of just how unpredictable their behavior was at times (that, and I think concealing the aliens in this movie would have completely contradicted the rest of the film's "show, don't tell" philosophy).

    I just finished watching this masterpiece. No One Will Save You is, in my opinion, the best horror movie of the year. I absolutely loved that the film had no dialogue, and the camera work and sound design were so creative. To be completely honest, I was NOT expecting the film to go in a dramatic and emotional turn near the third act. I was on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. It's now one of my favorite horror and sci-fi movies! I highly recommend it!
