  • Testing XC60 t8 Off Road mode and esc working on hard packed 25cm deep snow. First testing how esc is braking slipping tyre, quite long delay. On summer time easily smoke tyres to slicks... Also notice that when front is slipping, it reduce power almost zero, while still press gas pedal at same level. Hard to press gas just "right". You can also see how front and back are not quite sync when there is much resistance to wheels, first might rear slipping, then it stops and front start to slip, and then power is cut totally. If press to "esc sport mode" on, there is none braking slipping tire at all, so even worse situation. Air suspension is high automatically on off road mode. Esc work much worse than my previous car, -12 X3, but higher ground clearance helps Volvo.

For such roads, with more than 30cm snow, you need adaptive suspension, to lift up the car otherwise you'll lay on the snow loosing the grip. Use the drive mode selector to OFF-ROAD mode, to get the gear ratio modifiyed, to have the electronically reduction gear working.
To use this excellent car in OFF-ROAD you need some "extra options", to get the real output in snow, mud and sand.
I have this Volvo XC60 T8 since march 2019, I know what she can do in OFF-ROAD, excellent behaviour, but need some "extra", proper tyre for snow, adaptive suspension and the the gearbox with electronic reduction gear ratio.

Such a nice car! My dad has a vacation home in Norway and he just bought a xc60 t5 awd after owning a d4 xc90. In winter times the Awd is just a necessary thing to have. With the xc90 we were often unable to get up to our house, but with the Awd its a piece of cake. Love Volvo❤🇸🇪

This car doesn’t have the haldex awd system but a rear electric motor that has only 86hp and clearly the software isn’t managing that as it should for off-road. The real awd would probably handle that situation a lot better, it’s quite capable. Off course, if there’s too much snow for the ground clearance, then it’s just 🤷‍♂️

damn theres so much more power being sent to the front wheels you would think its toyota awd
I wish volvo would give the phev cars a better awd system like t5 and t6 cars have

I think this "offroad mode" in our volvos is only a pseudo offroad mode, just to have it. There are not really much more offroad propertys as in other modes. Gearbox and engineresponse seems to be changed in this mode. But the AWD System performs in all modes as same, i think. I like these 1:1 tests on "4x4 tests on rollers channel" here on youtube - much of the cars here in europe uses the haldex/borgwarner system - like our volvo. So the hardware is the same - lets take audi allroad (2020) - look at the test on the channel, there you can see - volvo does it better - for whatever reason. I think the car as construction - also the software may be different - i think, swedish engineers have other opportunities and abilities - but a volvo also has another claim - at least in the north of sweden. Recently i got a BMW 530e in stockholm to drive to kiruna, there was much snow in dezember. This car also performs really good in snow - especially the hybrid engine on back that can be used allone, so you can have fun. My 2018 V90cc doesnt have en e-engine, so i dont know how it would work in a volvo. Here in austrian alps the v90cc is a sufficient awd car - above all, we have even less snow than in the south of sweden

Yes, you are correct. But it can be done well if manufacturer wants to. Example bmw x3 and x5, their slipping wheel braking works whole different level than volvo. My previous car was F25 X3 2.0d, and it worked fine. But I can imagine that electric and petrol engines on different axles might be quite difficult to make work togehter well on hard conditions. But still, with air suspension volvo have good potential, but it have been lost for poor esc.

@@hoppista My v90cc got Airsuspension on back - i think on XC60 is same - but i never saw it, how it works. There should be a setting for me where i can choose the height - but only on rear axle? I think it works only for loading in the trunk - like the old volvos - to keep the level.
Electric an petrol per axle is it's a great opportunity, i think. And i trust the engineers that they can do it - this will certainly be improved even further in the near future
, but i can say - the 530e worked really good. Out of the box it should better than a haldex, haldex always have latency and construction limitations i think. An electrik engine works instantly - that´s a great advantage i think

@@uweholzer4374 xc60 has air suspension on front and back. Power mode lowers it, off road lift. Also on trunk there is buttons to lift/lower rear, as is yours Volvo. But you can not manually adjust height otherwise . Newer haldex is actually quite good, it connect rear wheels always when start to move at zero speed. And delay is quite short, almost like instant when needed on the move. Same is BMW, but it's working mechanism is different, and bimmer is always rear wheels first, except X1 and 2 series hybrid, which are like Volvo.

If is stock, you may be right. But if you configure your car thinking on off-road, this car can be excellent in off-road. I have this XC60 T8 since march 2019. But I added adaptive suspension and optional gearbox with electronic "reduction gear". When I select OFF-ROAD, the car get high and the gear ratio is electronically adjusted, so I have an excellent behaviour on 35 cm snow. Ofc, proper tyre for such snow.
Same behaviour as on my previous Mitsubishi with mechanical reduction gear.
This Volvo is one of the best car I ever drove, excellent output and torque, flawless behaviour on highway at HIGH speed (mine isn't limited at 180km/h) or in off-road.

    • @hoppista
      @hoppista  Před rokem

@@sorin-danieldanila8144 T8 has Aisin made 8 speed torque converter automatic gearbox on front, and rear is single speeb gearbox and electric motor. So I have quite sure that there is no modification available for those aftermarket or oem. Also if you have basic suspension, coil springs front and leaf spring back, it is quite impossible install air suspension on it. Or at least so expensive that it is cheaper to change car to model it has it. And those are not the biggest problem, because the problem is poorly configured esc program which is not brake slipping wheel enough to move power other side wheel.

As a Swede I would never buy a Volvo, just because the stability control can't be fully disabled. Being able to disable that in snow conditions where you're stuck is often pivotal.

My driving style is not pedal to the metal, and that is not the purpose of this video. I try to test how is awd system of Volvo XC 60 and it's differential braking works. Also conditions were hard, packed snow and powder like 25 to 30 cm. And I try to "feel" how car is behaving, not just full throttle and see how far it goes.
