HVAC Jobs That Made Me Think

- Before you leave a comment, read this description so you understand why I did what I did, I didn't fully explain the situation in the video....
The first job took two trips to diagnose because it would not act up for me every time, I didn't have much information on the equipment, I only had my experience from previous makeup air units that were similar but did not have the modulating dampers.
The next service call for the chiller was not prioritized for replacement, however it was critical for production to run. The control board could have been ordered but what's the point when there are two compressors bad on each refrigerant circuit and the condenser coil is leaking R22 on the circuit that has the working controls. So I salvaged it parts from circuit one to make circuit two run.

I've been doing HVAC controls for 17 years now and just came across your channel. Fantastic content BTW. We end up having to dive into unit troubleshooting when we get blamed for units not working. Often times I have to prove the unit has mechanical issues that need to be addressed.
We have a Controls’s department and they say the same thing 🤣👍👍
Love watching a master at work. One day hope to be half the technician this guy is. 10 yrs in and learning everyday. Thanks for giving us quality straight to the point content with no filler like other hvac CZcamsrs. Rick you got any merch I can purchase?
No I don't, I hear its not worth the risk of getting stuck with the unsold merch
Each time I watch your videos,I am gaining confidence, thank you for sharing
Great troubleshooting Rick....seems like my days at work. Had an odd ball last week on a Trane DOAS unit.....boiled down to an expansion module not outputting voltage to circuit 2 and 3rd stage heat. I did everything in my abilities to prove it wrong, but i was correct. When I'm somewhat in doubt or second guessing myself....i try to prove what i thought it was wrong...if i can't...i can feel good about my diagnosis.
Same here👍👍
Doing reefer work myself, I can appreciate your efforts in the cold. Gotta love the days that it's warmer in a walk in box than outside! Keep em coming my friend. Love your content.
I watched Chris ( HVACR VIDEOS ) on his channel he appreciates your content on your channel! Congratulations on your gift from him !
Awesome! Thank you! He is a great guy in person as he is on camera.
There’s techs who give a weak attempt to find the problem and try their darndest to wriggle outta staying there. You’re the opposite. You stayed there and battled! Much respect!👍🏼
Thanks my man🤜🤛👍👍
Old direct fired burner, now your speaking my language! Nice job Rick. Anything direct fired air flow is critical. They don't usually tell you a gas pressure maxitrol valves modulate. On the maxitrol amplifier removing terminals 8 and/or 3 puts you in high and low fire and allows you to set pressure per supply temperature rise.
Keep watching the chiller I called you about is next...lol
@@HVACRSurvival I watched the entire video, 2 tough ones 😆, Nicely done 👏
this is some good info. I have been out of commercial direct burner things for a while. but now being on my own im finding more and more specialty things
@@spymoocowgaming I've got a few old videos working on a few direct fired burners, once you understand them their not too bad.
Peaked my interest man. Good shit. You’re an absolute G for splitting the terminal connections. I’m sure we don’t see EVERYTHING, but the way you keep your cool is somewhat inspiring. Thanks for the vid, keep ‘em comin!
Thanks John! I was going crazy but it always works out sooner or later. We won't become better without struggling.
Great find on the burner pilot!!
Awesome video. I've never worked on equipment that handles a paint booth. Nice
Thanks for watching it!
Great job on the Trane , at least somewhat running is better than nada .
"The maintenance guys by-passed all the safeties " Somehow that sounds familiar no matter where you live eh 😆
I'm surprised how well they did it, but they have been nursing this along for a long time.
Atta boy, service is all in the presentation. if we're not careful it easily looks like throwing parts at the problem..
Communication is key, I'm straight forward and explain everything that I have checked to the owner. Then to get blown off by the factory with 0 help, what else can you do. (It's the first one like this I've seen.) I knew it didn't make sense because I had proper gas to the pilot but the way the flame was being disturbed it looked like it was an air issue, I didn't mention it but I even tried using silicone to seal the back side of the pilot from being disturbed from the air passing by it, I didn't know about that burner being able to come apart like it did.
Loving the unity, that you have with other techs that I also subscribed to,and gain knowledge from
Thank you! All the creators I associate with like to help build up others in the field.
@@HVACRSurvival I really appreciate it
These paint booths are so special.
I love this channel! Happy New year to you and your family
Those dampers are called profile dampers and are supposed to be closed on light off then open up to heat
Great explaining your work Rick. Very informative and I learn something everytime I watch your videos. The editing is great. Keep it up Rick!
Thanks for the comment on the editing, I recently changed from a PC to a Macbook pro 16 and back to a GoPro 11 so I've been having a few problems with color and export settings, but I just about have it figured out 🤣🤣
As NorCal Dave would say . Hackin and mowin
Great fix on that chiller
🤣👍👍I love Dave🤟 he's the coolest!
@@HVACRSurvival ya for sure. Definitely one of the best CZcamsrs out there
Love the troubleshooting aspects of your vids ... You done good Son ... Thx ...
I've fallen victim to those MUA plates on the burner. Unfortunately mine were all rusted out and turned to dust as you touched them.
That was my first time seeing them rotate like that.
Awesome field repair. Gotta do what you gotta do 👍🏻
always good to have some challenges
I complain sometimes when it's a boring service check, then I complain because I've ran out of answers😀🤣. Thanks for watching!
👍💪🇺🇸❄️ Nice work Macgyver
🤣 we have a guy in our group that they call that👍👍. He's in the pipe line industry.
Using a display module on the Honeywell control on that MUA unit can really help with trouble shooting sometimes. Direct fired MUA units can be a pain sometimes
I have one 👍. I used it on the first trip. Basically it told me it was failing where you saw it fail, in the pilot stage.
Good job on that one. I have found that the Maintenance budget at most industrial plants. Have a much higher budgets for repairs and less for replacements. (Bean Counters). I have seen some spend 60 grand on chiller compressors (hit by lightning) rather than spend 57 grand for new system.
I've heard that as well. It's crazy but I think it's tax related.
it's often a matter of how "quickly" it can be back in service, also how integrated it is with the machinery it's cooling. replacing a chiller/controls, could mean the whole machine needs controls and computer changed or replaced! $60K may be far cheaper than a multi-million machine needing replaced to work with other equipment and risking more problems and breakage on stuff that works fine otherwise.
there's always layers of complexity and unseen troubles, old software, computers and protocols no longer produced or things that may takes months to have custom programmed.
Very clever approach
Thank you!
FYI depending on the coil setup it may be utilizing both the condenser fan from one and two so you might end up having to come back and put on the second condenser fan or put in a pressure control switch or temperature control switch so when the condenses temperature gets to a certain point you can bring in the second fan and help pull it down in the extreme temperatures
The condenser fans are controlled by liquid temperature, the front fan that looks squarish at top has dampers on it that actually try to modulate shut to keep condenser temperature up in the low ambient and the rear fan cycles on and off, there's a total of two fans for each side.
Nice work interesting work 👍👍👍
Bravo and well done going the extra miles on the intellipak. I’m of the opinion that trane is the worst of the big 4 to service.
I'm mixed on how I feel about them. They are different and I little different than what I'm use to but once you get it working they do seem to be reliable.
Just keep em running. nice work.
🤜🤛👍👍
Great work.
Thanks 🤜🤛👍👍
Good job Rick.
Good jobs Rick.
I bet you looked nice and dusty after working on that paint booth. Stuff looked 4” thick.
I tried to not touch anything, I hung my bag on the gas line to keep it clean.
Hope they ordered a new chiller months ago, leadtimes are still 9 months to a year or more, depending on manufacturer.
I think there's still lollygagging...🤦🏻 Let's just say corporates bean counters are too involved.
Fun stuff!
You can replace the relay on the pcb.
I work on Direct fired equipment all the time, the pilot flame in my opinion was a bit big and aggressive for a unit that small, and often that will give pilot flame faults from flame lifting (more so on flame rod systems than UV mind you) but if you're ever back there try dialing back the pilot pressure a bit or if it has a needle valve (didnt seen one) restrict that pilot some
Thanks for the info, luckily I haven't had to go back since I posted this. 🤞
@@HVACRSurvival right on that was a good catch on loose profile plates I've actually never seen that
I'm not going to lie, it took about three times going out there and tearing a completely apart multiple times to figure it out. That was kind of hidden.
You had me worried when you were boogie-ing atop the paint boot. Stay Safe. Those cast iron burner manifold orifaces tend to close up over time also resulting in an underfiring unit.
Took a minute to understand why you marked and cut the plug up. Good move on an otherwise scap unit.
Was half the board dead? That company likes living on the edge of total failure with their units, I guess. Sometimes you just have to limp it along, but man down to 25% capacity. WOW
It's winter so they will be ok until it gets hotter, they only cool the mix to 65*f, I forgot to mention that I punched out the orifices on the burner on the first trip.
Great catch! Not fully understanding profile dampers moving, that Midco burner is based on pressure drop. Only way my brain can process that system is that blower motor is 2 speed. Never worked on tht brand so don't know sequence of operation in bake mode.
That's what was so difficult for me too😁.. No, the fan stays the same speed but what they're doing is slowing the air flow down by closing the dampers at the burner side and on the discharge side of the blower. They're trying to trap the heat in the room where the car is being painted. That room will go up to 165° to help dry it, they use waterborne paint.
@@HVACRSurvival When profile dampers close pressure drop across the burner changes dramatically. Gas/Air ratio all get out of wack, would love to put an analyzer on that thing to see what happens.
Nice job
Can't even be mad about that chiller hacking or even call it a hack job. Got it back online and doing it's job somewhat.
Thanks!
Second part of the video. That is some real jedi stuff master Rick. 😎
🤣💥👍👍
Just found your channel and really enjoy watching your videos. I appreciate the tie it takes to make and edit them. But because there’s always a but 😂 I just don’t understand why so many tech don’t like Trane. 🤷♂️
Lack of training and parts is why. Trane isn't local so you're waiting for parts.
@@HVACRSurvival I can see your point about training. Although there isn’t a lot of training for most brands. Most factory parts house don’t open up a location in smaller markets. Plus Carrie and York don’t support there larger ton chillers at there local parts houses. You have to order them direct.
They are called profile dampers
11:48 gotta ask, what brand of wire strippers/cutters this is from? I've been searching for a pair just like it but I've come up with nothing like it...
Say what schematics That's pretty cool that you're able to get schematics for the system .. What is crazy is with all that circuitry being in the weather elements they do not coat The components or seal the components Must be a common issue with the corrosion ... Pretty good video explaining stuff I just hit the subscribe button 👍
@Qstech Thanks man! I really appreciate that!
I don't know if you have any ATS staltz units down there but took me a while to figure out how to read those wine diagrams but after they told us at the factory oh my gosh so much easier
No, I haven't heard of them,
That’s some good trouble shooting. 👍Rick.
💥🙌🤜🤛👍👍
Chiller call looked rough
Just a little.
👍
If you think that train is a little bit weird I have some mammoth units that I've lived in extremely hard life and for some stupid reason the idiots that designed it designed it so that the entire unit will not call for cooling if the 5 amp fuse for one of the compressors heater elements does not work how stupid do you think that is
That's gross negligence 🤦🏻. It don't surprise me, it's about as stupid as the Aon units that put the control system on the same circuit as the condenser fan so that when the condenser fan goes out it takes out the controls for the whole unit.
Regarding the compressor with the locked rotor, have to tried reversing the motor direction electrically to try and unlock it?
I've tried that in the past, it generally doesn't work, if it does... it'll fail again, the bearings are screwed or the windings have issues.
You’re a baddddd man.
Good. God.
When all else fails you you kinda have to start throwing parts at it don’t you
Not what I wanted to do but like the owner said, if we do nothing it will happen again for sure. I was up front with him and he understood I checked everything. I'll never miss this again.
504 Thumbs uP
Maybe it's the tail end of the COVID infection I'm fighting, but this video really drove me nuts when I kept hearing 'to be' left out. Sorry, it either "needs replacing" or "needs to be replaced". _Nothing_ ever "needs replaced". Normally I can ignore it (my wife loses the 'to be' a lot, she's from Detroit), but it must be the constant litany in this video that made me post this.
Other than that, excellent jobs just getting things working. I hate that kind of job myself, but I've had to do it too many times.
My spelling and grammar sucks. That's the quality public education I got👍👍
@@HVACRSurvival - I'd bet you were taught standard English. However, that's not normally the English that is spoken. Spoken English is regionalized. My folks were always VERY insistent that we should at least know how to speak well before we speak badly. It's also very difficult to compare costs of schooling between countries, due to _how_ they do it.
Covid causes grouchy Karen mode, who'd have ever guessed. lol🤣or maybe no private time from wife, kids, pets, others mixed in?
really I didn't even notice, but grammar and writing skills were never my strong point either. yeah, just being funny above. 🤪
@@throttlebottle5906 - No, no, definitely not Karen mode. I didn't complain about first world problems and how I'm being _personally_ inconvenienced by not being pandered to. Maybe it's Janice mode, because it's not quite Karen.
Your nuts, 3 of 4 compressors dead and you butcher the system to get the last compressor running? Sometimes you just have to deliver the bad news and walk on. Make them replace the dam thing. No way I would have jumped out all that shit and left my name on it.
All the safety circuits were back in place, I didn't leave anything bypassed... all I did was switch circuit A and B inputs and outputs. When this locks up and doesn't run they'll have no choice but to do it. I fully noted that this needed replaced on the paperwork and that it would fail again soon.
wow that plate
