For millions of years, water has run over the limestone and dolomite bedrocks of Croatia carving out a special subterranean world. In this mysterious underground terrain, uniquely adapted species have evolved in the dark, damp environments in what’s known as karst caves. Although we are no longer cave-dwelling species ourselves, our impact on these fragile ecosystems is still being felt. For decades, caves in Croatia have been used as dumping grounds for waste, which is threatening endemic cave species and polluting important sources of water. Supporting our partners BIOTA, we are attempting to undo some of the footprint by sending a team of technical divers into the Predolac cave to remove waste.

When do you plan to accept crypto currency donations?
what I learnt by taking a tour in Postojna Caves is that cave creatures, especially the olm, are photosensitive and were asked to not use flash or bright light inside the cave. Makes me concerned seeing you film them when they are clearly trying to run away from your light. I am a member of mossy earth and expect you to be aware that aiming lights at creatures that are only adapted to living in complete darkness is harmful and you could do without filming them (unless this is not your footage, then I apologize)

I'll admit, when I think about projects for helping the environment it never even occurred to me that trash dumps in caves could be a problem so thank you not only for actively cleaning out this one but also for exposing us to a new type of project (at least new to me) that hopefully other places will take on as well. Great work and mad props to the dive team!

Great work Team! Try using a big magnet, My son used one to try some “Magnet Fishing” in a river, and it pulled up a lot of stuff! It's cheap, easy, and you can use it once the silt levels make you retire for a while.

Wow, never thought of cave restoration, thus organization always suprises me with innovative ways to help the planet, I dream to one day be able to help directly with a restoration project, but for now, I hope donations help others do it for me
They certainly do, especially when donating to people like him, or trusted and reputable organizations, not big corporations looking for tax write offs and not making a big positive change. Arbor Day foundation is a great one to donate too, as each dollar plants a tree.
Didn't expect you to come to Croatia of all places but nonetheless we appreciate the work you all do.
Did reef cleanup in Phi-Phi after the 2004 tsunami -- we were in open sea and had very tough conditions to clean up building debris from the reefs around the bay. But the silting-up we encountered was NOTHING compared to what these dedicated, intrepid eco-divers encounter when cleaning up these caves! Thank you to them all for this incredibly hard and risky work...

Traditionally farmers used to drop all sorts of stuff into holes. Two reasons were out of sight, out of mind but the other one was to actually try to fill up the hole to reduce the risk of animals falling in.
Our local rescue team rescues lots of sheep and occasionally dogs that have got themselves into trouble
Never even considered this as a problem, but i am glad you are giving ore exposure to this problem. Glad you are helping in all the small places
I have a little doubt. At 1:55 in this video, we can see the Cave Sponges attached to what looks like a trash, so my question is, if you are in a situation where an organism like this is attached to a trash material that should be removed, what exactly will be done there ? Is it possible to separate them from the trash ? Or you have to take away the whole trash along with the organism attached to it ? Or you'll leave that trash behind so that the organisms will be unharmed ? Just curious to know :)

How does one get into a field thats like this? Im working towards my wildlife conservation degree and after finding your guys channel and your business its something that matches what i would like to do once im out of school
Cave cleaning specifically or working in rewilding generally? I think the best thing you can do is gain a general understand of ecosystem restoration and then focus on a particular area in a way that interests you. Cheers, Rob

I'm worried that all the silt kicked up in the junk removal may harm more than just leaving it there. That garbage was so old, decades old. The divers said the stuff was breaking up as they tried to pick it up. That would have filled the water with polluted particles. Glad to see the trash out, I hope the ecosystem returns to balance soon.
It will cause an ammonia spike, but there should be so many benificial bacteria in there that it will get turned into nitrates in no time, which isn't harmful for fish or other animals
Any other particles that are released during removal would have gone into the waterways some time anyways, if not now then in the next 20 years surely, really better to just remove since they can't get broken down

The other great thing about cleaning up these ecosystems is that inherently most of our drinking water comes from groundwater sources or rivers. This is helping biodiversity and the cleanliness of drinking water supplies! So important thank you!
That’s awesome. Maybe on the next dives prioritize different types of trash. Like the glass isn’t going to decompose and create a toxic atmosphere, but the glue from the particular board and decomposing plastics could.
Animals might get hurt by sharp glass shards though.

Also glass doesn't pollute so I think it shouldn't be pulled out. As well as wood.
I think the glass shards are now of an injury risk if animals swim into them than a chemical pollution.

Wood does pollute because it rots and can release different nutrients or strange chemicals that affect the living creatures in the water, not to mention polluting the groundwater. Also, perhaps glass is a hazard for the cave divers. Either way, they don't belong there

Hello to all you Croatians. Glad to see so much awareness and support from Eastern Europe. Is it difficult to get rid of appliances in Croatia. In the US, in most states, you have a set day for putting out large items: sofa, refrigerators, etc. And is some cases, you need to call for instructions on how to get rid of some things (due to bio or chemical hazards). There may be an additional charge for removing the item. I guess that's why some homes are cluttered with old stuff. People don't want to pay for removal. That's sad.

Just to know, here in Italy there is an entire type of event organised by Speleological Society called “Clean the dark” (Puliamo il buio) where caves are cleaned, especially those that were used as dump for many years.
I know it'll be an extra thing for you guys but I would LOVE a mossy earth podcast. It'll allow you guys to go more in-depth with the science and ecology and increase your visibility

As the cave can now be visited by tourists through the visitor centre, are you not afraid those tourists may bring/leave their trash in the cave system as they go through it?

Best and most effective way is a sign emphasizing not to litter to protect the environment, and any offenders will be fined for littering, or permanently banned. Then, add two large trash cans right outside the cave entrance. This should severely limit and reduce the problem.
I live near some caves that are used for tourists. It's not too big a problem because they are kept to strict pathways so any litter is obvious. Plus most people visit the gift shop/cafe afterwards so they're not bringing too much stuff in with them.
I just love that the organization keeps me up to date on cool, small, impactful projects.
Wow, yeah that's a rough place to clean but I'm so glad you did. This video really showcase some of the many things I really appreciate about Mossy Earths projects, no matter if they are Mossy Earth originals or they join an already existing project. What I love is that they follow the science and do what is known or strongly theorised to be the most impactful actions for a species, area or ecosystem, they do good all over the globe, the project and work is more important than filming a perfect and aesthetic video and they don't pick projects due to an animal being cute and cuddly or how paradise-esc a restored tropical beach would look in their thumbnails. I'm not saying that conventionally beautiful or adorable animals don't deserve aid (I mean my favourite land mammal is the amur leopard and it's critically endangered) but the majority of larger charities, wildlife organisations etc often focus heavily on quite large animals people already know exist and are attached to in some way and I'm happy when I see aid going towards animals most don't know exist at all because they are still important. Nature is a connective network that we understand so little about even now but we know how important each species can be for the network to run smoothly so we should make an effort to care for all species of animals, plants and fungi. Besides, the isolated little cliff snails are freaking adorable to me.

Close to where i live in Greece, there is a cave that in its deepest place it's filled with garbage. I've actually filmed it, its the second video on my channel, 2 years ago.
