I think this is exactly why joshua, ryan garcia and canelo deserve respect for takikg tougher fights. Yet people disrespect them after losses, which is the problem. Being undefeated is held too highly in boxing
Joshua??
One of the things that made Ali a GREAT, was losing and coming back to win titles…
@@shanedjoy8954 What made Ali great was his opponents. The guy was fighting in an era where every heavyweight could knock you out on their best day.
@@jackhughes7637yes the Anthony Joshua, the man that has fought the guy that Tyson fury keeps running from, twice
I don’t think you know what you’re talking about
Agree with the lad. Not enough 50/50 fights.
All of the promoters. The fighters want to fight each other they wouldn’t be involved in sport if they weren’t competitive. The promoters want to milk them for all they’re worth and not risk their stock going down with a loss
HW in MMA is almost always 50/50. Rarely do you see consistency in that category. It's just the nature of it.
Not enough 70/30 fights never mind 50/50.
This makes the Francis fight even crazier. His first fight goes straight for the top, and the fight is so close people still argue about it. Win or lose the fact that there's even a discussion is absolutely insane.
Tom has hit the nail on the head about boxing! I love the sport but it’s becoming a parody of itself.
Agreed 💯 and the subject was swiftly changed there 😂
Heavyweight boxing is but other weight divisions ain't as bad, unfortunately heavyweight gets the most attention
idk it's definitely getting better, bigger fights are being made, people are losing their undefeated title; taylor, spence, garcia, fulton and bigger fights are being made in general. heavyweights are shite but the rest (proper boxing) is getting a lot better

As a lifelong boxing fan I 100% agree and I think he put it very well.
I never really looked at it like that... Someone who clearly subpar being thrown to a undefeated boxer (who people think is actually class), is actually a lot more dangerous than we talk about.

@@shanedjoy8954 lol you were not paying any attention to this interview and have answered out of context to what this person is referring to.
@shanedjoy8954 Tom was talking about boxing matchmaking in general, not Ngannou vs Fury...
And he's right, promising boxers are often so preoccupied with keeping their undefeated record that they routinely get matched up with cans who have no business fighting them.
They're not being thrown at the fighters ,those are journeyman that willingly take those fights knowing they're more than likely are gonna lose just for the paycheck,if you value money more than your health that's on you lol

Totally agree. The boxing model is corrupt and needs a complete overhaul.
A really humble comment from Aspinall, 'I don't really know how to score boxing.'
Tom, I can tell you right now, after watching boxing for over 40 years, and diligently getting my paper and pen out for every fight I watch so I can score fights, there are plenty of boxers, ex-boxers, managers, coaches, promoters, commentators, pundits, presenters and anlaysts who also don't know how to score boxing fights. The only difference is, you Mr Aspinall, have admitted your lack of qualification - they rarely do.
why don't you think about becoming a judge in a smaller league or something fella

Spot on Tom. For some reason boxing has the crazy concept about this undefeated record but if you look at mma and how the best fight the best and losses don’t ruin a career they are an inevitable consequence of fighting the elite. There are no storylines or arcs in boxing just beat 20 lacklustre opponents and then find a loophole to a world title then go back to lacklustre opponents
The probablem if if boxers lose because they fight hard fights like Anthony joshua dod they will call him no good, its the boxing fans thatbare the prpblem thwy are facisnated by the 0 and i hate boixng fans
@@thebigdogg2866 They've been conditioned into it at this point, I guarantee you if a bunch of the top boxers decided to start fighting each other and the 0 loss streaks start falling more Fans will be forced to think of defeated fighters differently especially when the defeated fighter takes someone's 0. An unbeaten streak should come naturally not be pioneered
@@nicolasvojtisek7365 yeah people like money Mayweather and his antics is a big part of the problem
its the promoters, they look at the undefeated fighters like cash cows, build up their profile against journeyman and then cash em out in the big title fights or a big name domestic fight. Ideally on their bill where they can get their judges and ref in that's on the payroll. If by chance they lose they just forget about them and move on to the next one, satisfied with the money they've already made of them. Its a racket fixed in their favour, where the fans get ripped off and boxers get used and abused except the fortunate few who are marketable not necessarily good
It's mostly down to that gobshite Mayweather.
Never known a fighter to be so honest and real about their career and where they are. Saying he wants to clean up in the ufc before even thinking about boxing is spot on. Carving out a legacy in the right way

Bent & Moron must be the world’s worst boxing pundits.
They could easily replace these two with literally anyone and it would be instantly better.
Well in Tom for pointing out what none of the sports commentators will. Boxing has been turned into a joke by the promoters, too greedy to risk any of their fighters losing at the risk of letting the fans see a competitive fight. Entire cards filled with favourites vs journeyman, cherry-picking, blatant robberies, bent refs and judges, top fighters being avoided and becoming irrelevant. Just become a totally corrupt sport. Promoters need jailing and half the belts need scrapping and boxing needs to be started up again from scratch. Maybe some sort of league system where fights are unavoidable
Tom is right about about the current state of boxing...
tom's the boy, we love him
Class act. What a Champ we've got. Show em how its done Tom.
I agree with him to a certain extent......Boxers can decide their own path and are still paid quite handsomely for it.....whereas in MMA the fighters are generally signed to an organisation which dictates who and when they fight and have to to stand a chance of earning something worthwhile. Boxing has its issues, but unlike what he said about where Boxing is going, we're having more unifications, undisputed and top fights now in Boxing more than we've ever had before. We had cards in Manchester and Wolverhampton the other week which rivalled a whole year's worth of Boxing in the 70s...then you have this Saudi card before Xmas which is the best, most star-studded card ever made with 9 rival promoters contributing. I don't know what people are on when they say Boxing is in a bad place........Furthermore Tom can only blame his mate Fury for not taking on tough competition for ages as he's one of the worst for it.
You're deluded. Fury and Joshua/Joshua and Wlder should have happened a few years back, and they will likely never happen. Also boxing tends to have zero personalities whereas in the UFC half of the fan folliwng is based on fighters colourful veries personalitities. Boxing is in a grey zone, only boxing loyalists/purists keep up with anything other than the heavywieght division, which is in a shambles right now.
@@dude9038To be fair heavyweight has been better this year but Joshua wilder should have happened ages ago, not even getting into the fury usyk bs
@@dude9038nah that's just you not realizing the bubble you live in. Other divisions have sold out arenas and made solid ppv numbers last year alone. You just don't hang out with people that talk about those divisions
Legend tom is ,boxing should be like the ufc
It’s impossible for boxing to be like the UFC now, too many promotions and belts
UFC is becoming far superior to Boxing for entertainment! The best actually fight each other.
Didn't the best leave to fight Fury?
Best fighting the best in one promotion, not the best fighting the best in mma it’s the exact same in boxing
Entertainment yeah but 90 % of mma fights look like pub fighters very sloppy and then the ground game stuff that ain't Entertainment
@@agt155 no he wasn't in the ufc anymore.
@@km025 There is no UFC of boxing. No promoter is willing to do 50/50 fights.
If you watched lower level then the fights are closer, but he's right at high end or even top prospects its normally a miss match
Aspinall is bang on
Flying in airplanes is really dangerous , cars are dangerous , horse ruding is dangerous , actually life is dangerous
Spot on
He has a point when you look at the glamour divisions (ie the heavyweights and whichever division/s the Americans have a couple of decent fighters in, currently 135, 140 and 147). The problem is The Mayweather Effect: Al Haymon made Floyd's 0 his USP, and he made a stunning amount of money that way. They used the 0 as the signifier of his greatness, and used losses on other fighter's records as a stick to beat them with in negotiations, or a reason not to fight them at all as they were 'unworthy' (which is funny, as Floyd only beat 3 undefeated fighters in his entire career).
The expectations of the casual boxing fan were massively skewed by this, and these days taking an L pretty-much torpedoes a fighter's market value and career prospects instantaneously. Fir the casuals, taking an L means a fighter is suddenly a 'bum', 'overrated' and 'not elite'. Being as these guys fight for a living, it's unsurprising that such a fickle customer base gives them the willies.
Fortunately, there's light at the end of the tunnel: regardless of how much stick fighters who take losses get from the casuals, with the ease of free streaming nobody is prepared to pay for mismatches on PPV, so the old model that made Floyd $300m is no longer viable, and the Saudis having decided to use their infinite wealth to make fantasy matchups is going to wuickly accustom fans to a higher quality product.

He's correct in most things talks about here but calling mismatches dangerous when most fights I've watched where evenly matched fighters who can obsorb huge punches are the fights where there's a bad outcome, like Benn v Gman or Eubank v Watson
No thats only because they're high profile so you remember them, there are still 13 deaths a year on average from miss matched set ups to build guys records
At smaller shows they'll even pay the ref to let it go till its a brutal knockout so it looks good for their fighter
I observe that you don’t know what you’re talking about. I think you meant absorb btw.
@InterYamah they pay the ref to let the oponents to get knocked out? I'm not saying that's not true but could send me a link please so I can have a look, cheers
@InterYamah also can you send me an example of mismatches that have occurred with injuries, I'm always open to learn but someone just saying it doesn't make it a fact, cheers
Tom is awesome. Tyson should be ashamed of himself. Boxing for many weight classes is trash. But there are still some gems
I will always love boxing ❤
Boxing has always been that way, and always will be. Two primary reasons why MMA sh*ts on boxing: a.) The best actually fight the best b.) They're using ALL THEIR WEAPONS, so it's a real fight
The problem with what all ufc fighter's say about boxing is regardless of all the mismatches, regardless of all the fights that should happen never happening, its still a FACT that any mainstream boxer is making more than 3 times than any ufc fighter on the same level is making, and given the opportunity they jump at a cross over boxing fight! At the end of the day fighting is a job, and if they are being paid alot more than you for doing that job, they're winning, not you! If I had to choose between 2 jobs where with one I can get punched kicked kneed or elbowed in the head, and possibly my arm ripped off,for £500k, and the other job I'll only get punched and for £3mil,I know which one I'm picking!! Smh
It’s 90% the promotion company. They’re marketing companies trying to build the stock up of their asset as much as possible before they crash out
The first MMA guy that I heard that said Tyson won.

Facts
"UFC you only get the big fights" Simply not true, the biggest fight in the UFC to make this year was Ngannou vs Jones and they couldn't make it. To say the problem is solely Boxing is wrong, as soon as the money goes up in the MMA they will have similar problems
No they won’t, simply because there is one belt per division under one promotion, instead of 4 belts and many different promoters. Sure fighters turn other fighters down for stylistic reasons, but more often than not everyone in the top 15 of each division fight each other. UFC will never become the current boxing model, it’s impossible

Same reason I stopped watching boxing on a regular basis
People seem to be missing the point that Boxing is a business, I get the fighters would take the toughest tests but the management teams and promoters are there to create the biggest financial opportunities for the fighters.
Ultimately that is why we see so many mismatches and a card stacked with decent level fighters vs the human punch bag.
Unfortunately I don’t see how it will ever change 🤷♂️
People will eventually flock to see those who take the toughest tests, though. Look at Manny - lost several times but it didn't matter. Always loooked to fight the best out there.
@@kevinb9830 That's if the majority of boxing viewers think like you and I. There are lots of casuals, who make promotions the thick of their money.

I like Tom a lot but boxing is a very intricate and complex game (depending on who you watch, a Floyd Jr or Lomachenko for example) where the skills to master are in such fine detail. There are very few mixed martial artists who are as detailed and complex in what they do which is why most of them can win on any given night and upsets happen much more often. A Wonderboy Thompson for example is a master of one trade, but most MMA fighters are jacks of all trades masters of none and the attention to detail isn’t that great. I’m an MMA fan btw, quite the hardcore and I’m also a regular fan of boxing but I’m mainly a fan of skills
