Oh wow, I never connected the notion that knife throwing from a non standing position didnt get affected by that instant detection, or that Brotherhood's knife's damage were tied to story progression

additional point, is that pickpockets and borgia messengers wont die in 1 hit to knives, so you can stop them and get the money wihtout killing them very, very easily and quickly as its not always possible or interesting to chase.
hard part is just making sure the aim doesnt f up and competely miss the target by 2 meters. sometimes it misses bc theyre climbing, sometimes when theyre slow or fast running, or stopped as it incorrectly predicts where theyll be

addendum - I think this may only apply to ac2 as it has the weakest knives, and as brotherhood buffs them (not sure if this changes post sequence 4 for messengers/pickpockets) and revelations has no messengers iirc, it's not so effective there.

You missed flying knife crouching. Enemies won't detect you even if they're at the other side next to the small objecf and you can throw knives from this cover. You can replay Sequence 4 memory 3 snd sequence 2 memory 1 cuz these are good places to try it out. So basically safe covering like in Unity and being able to throw knives from there.
