    A very fine sword, love the craftsmanship. Only drawback is you can't unscrew the pommel to end your opponent rightly.

      That could be nice, but would take away from the spartan aesthetic.

      Thanks. Unfortunately, I haven't had much time for cutting lately, then f'd up my shoulder and have had a difficult time with the movements for most of a year, still working on getting proper range of motion back. Hopefull for some later videos.

    Man watching your videos is always a blast! I'm almost done buildng my first forge and soon I'll start bladesmithing. People probably ask you how to make swords all the time, but one could learn a lot, even though not everything, just from watching your videos. I know I have!

      Glad you like the videos. I learned how to make blades by reading and researching information available online, the internet is a wonderful repository of information. Good luck with your forge!

    Excellent job as always. learned something new today from this episode i think your the only one who ever mentioned that you also normalize the peen. great attention to detail and i am sure you makes the assembly more durable

    Hadn't received any new notifications for your vids in a while Jeffery. Glad I received this one. Apparently I had missed a couple that I'll be watching shortly.
    Noticed the press you are using isn't the one from previous videos that I believe you had built yourself. This one looks much fancier. Congrats on acquiring new tools for the new shop. Any chance on a future shop tour video, possibly touching on layout and on changes since your shop's earlier incarnations?
    Love your work and video production as always. Blessings!

      I've been really busy for the beginning of this year and didn't have time to edit any videos to put up. I have another few still in various stages of editing.
      I gave that little home built press away when I moved to the new location and bought the full sized press when I got the new shop set up.
      A shop tour vid is possible, but not likely in the near future. Kind of a mess right now anyway.
      Thanks.

      brotherbanzai Well the positive affirmation that you've been busy is a good thing. Thanks for the reply. May your successes continue building on each other indefinitely! 👍

    Brother Bananzi, God be w you, what are your thoughts about using a special press with tooling angled specifically for distal tappers, I guess this would have to be a large milling project, or if tooling could be skewed from flat w screw adjustments. Anyway love your builds!!

    • @brotherbanzai
      @brotherbanzai  Před 4 lety

      Since the taper differs for every sword, it seems like it would be a lot more work to make a device like that than to just put in the taper normally.

    You make swordsmithing look so easy when it's a real pain in the ass. I've been using the same steel with great results except when forging the tang it kept forming cracks even when only hammered hot. My only guess is the repeated vibration from hammering weakened the relatively thin sections that probably air hardened had to be the cause. I need to build a press and a slightly bigger work forge.

    • @brotherbanzai
      @brotherbanzai  Před 6 lety

      It's a pretty resilient steel, maybe working it too cold or possibly getting it too hot between hammerings.

    • @uninspiredrambler
      @uninspiredrambler Před 6 lety

      brotherbanzai could you explain what you mean by too hot? I know over heating the steel ruins the grain structure but how it would cause fractures? Genuinely asking so I can understand the physics better. I still believe the biggest issue was only heating up the immediate area I was hammering on. I think the vibrations caused the cracking in areas that cooled too quickly. I did make a type XVIIIE without any cracking at all but had repeated issues with a xviiib tang. Eventually welded it back together, but the weld melted out! As if it heated at 2x the speed of the rest of the blade. Re-welded and it turned out fine, but damn! But I'm definitely learning from you that I'm trying to stretch my steel too far. Not leaving enough for scale removal and loss after HT. For now I'll give up forging bevels and stick to profile forging and heavier grinding. Thanks for the replies.

      Thanks. It doesn't fall into a defined category as many of the specs were sized up or re-proportioned to be a heroic fantasy sword while maintaining a plausibly historical look.
