I have a friend who lives in Moscow Russia and he explained "Заниматься" as being engaged in doing something.
Yes, that's exactly right!
Be Fluent in Russian да, спасибо!
yes, "engaged" in the sense of being busy with something I am doing right now - example: Right now, I am busy (with studying Russian)
Yes, engaged and occupied cover this idea. "To be occupied with". "To occupy oneself with" (adding cYA) is the closest idea I found in English.
Sometimes it fits perfectly, other times it works in English while not being the way we would say it. This is not looking for a good translation back and forth but simply a way to understand the scope of the word in Russian. ЗАНИМАТЬ carries that idea of being occupied with or "engaged" with something. Directing your time and attention to it. Once you undesrtand that is the idea, then you just notice that sometimes Russians use that idea to express practicing music, doing a task, or having a hobby, so the literal meaning of each of those uses comes out to "occupied with" "engaged with".
That's what makes learning languages fun. Discovering words like this one that can only be understood by exposure to the language ....and watching your videos. Great job!
interesting thought.
заниматься comes from занят - busy.
to get busy with -
I think of it as "to busy oneself" so I think your examples are all connected by this meaning.
it is
Very much appreciated, thank you!
Отличное объяснение! Спасибо за драгоценные советы!🔝 привет из Сардинии
Фёдор, очень спасибо Вам этот видео! Мне это была нужно сегодня.
была is mistake, because it's in fem. form while you said IT was needed.
this is great, in English, loosely speaking, we might say - "(sorry,) I am busy" - and it could be anything that I am engaged in doing
Good as usual !
давайте заниматься любовью, а не войной
Thank you.
I kinda got what toy meant. In Spanish we tend to say "dedicarse/abocarse a..." which means to get down to doing something or be very involved in doing something wiyhout any distraction. Difficult to express it in English as there`s no lexical equivalent.
True. A common question we ask in Spanish is "A que te dedicas?" (what do you do) which in Russian may be "Чем ты занимаешься?"
Это очень полезно, спасибо!
in French we say "je fais de la guitare" so literally "I do the guitar", kinda similar to заниматься!
Really? I thought it would be the same as spanish. In spanish they say “Yo tocar la guitarra” meaning “I touch the guitar”
je pensais à la même chose
@@mavmav0YT The correct form is "Yo toco la guitarra" (Toco is the conjugation form of the verb tocar for the pronoun yo). I'm a native Spanish speaker.
For the Brazilians out there:
Does that mean "se virar" meaning "dar conta"?
While taking your video into my brain, it sounds to me like *заниматься* differs from 'to do' in that this word is more specifically directed towards a goal, prioritizing that activity. Requiring focus, and may be more energy than something that has become a "normal" activity. Not having to mention exactly what is being done or will be done, because that matters less in such a context where one would need focus instead or where the activity is already known.
You've missed another meaning of this word which is not related to a person's activity. It's about fire to start burn some sorta large object \ or a dawn to start at the morning (занимался пожар \ занималась заря) :)
I have never ever heard or used заниматься in those meanings...
Well, now you know =) So you could probably record some extra video in addition to this one)
@@BeFluentinRussian Насчет пожара не слышал. А заря может заниматься. Это поэтическое.
that's true! but realy rare.
Yes. when a new [piece of smth] is starting to burn.
Mb because the wood is doing starting burning as well as the sun.
// and I can't remember any other case of this using of заниматься
You are handsome 😊😊😊
Целую 😙♥
Hey Fidor, you know how you do those videos on translating Russian songs, it would be cool if you could do Lullaby by Polina Gagarina! As it's such an amazing song
Yes, I am looking to do more of them here!
If you're looking for more additional songs, I make even more on BeFluent Class! Link in the description.
Thanks fidor 👍
Seems like the best way to translate this word would be “repetition “ doing something over and over or again and again
I'm not sure if this is right:
Делать: simply doing something
Заниматься: doing something that requires effort
занимается заря - начало явления, действия.
I'm busy with something
So could it mean to educate oneself?
Interesting. "I am engaged in tennising."
When you say займусь (in я займусь этим) is another aspect of заниматься, do you mean in the sense of perfective/imperfective aspect?
Also, in я занимаюсь теннисом, for example, the activity is in instrumental case?
1. Yes perfective-imperfective (занимаюсь-imperfective; займусь- perfective)
2. Yes, instrumental indeed.
Могу сказать (я этим займусь ) как I got it или нет 🙏🏼 пожалуйста скажите мне
So, Делать requires a direct object (noun in accusative case)? Also, it sounds like заниматься should include the word "continual" in any English definition or translation. What about "To be occupied with"?
1. Yes, when you say делать, you have to specify WHAT you're doing.
2. Actually "to be occupied with" is a great translation for the second meaning of being engaged in an activity (play tennis).
And it will be most applicable when we describe our profession/occupation.
Is it possible to use заниматься in the sense of taking care of a pet, for example ? Or is it strictly attached to the meaning of an unfinished activity that you propose to handle ? (:
Carolina, when you take care of a pet, the word "ухаживать" is applicable.
Заниматься, when it comes to pet, can have a meaning of you're training your pet. In that sense, yes taking care of it would have a translation of "заниматься".
Be Fluent in Russian I am a Malay person from Singapore, and I havent watched the video, but from the comments I think that заниматься is kinda like "sedang" in malay: Saya sedang makan.
(I am [in the process of] eating.)
Hi Fedor can the verb ЗАНИМАТЬСЯ be used as what do you do ? like чем занимаетесь Вы?
Yes! That's a great way to use it!
Thank you very much for your reply
@@alikermani7940 the verb is in the ты-form and it must be in the вы-form, am i right?
@@maximilianoalcaino3797 Both variants are correct
