I lived in Waianae in the mid 1950s for my 1st and 2nd grade education. I have been back to Waianae a number of times, sad to say, it was lots nicer 6o years ago than it is now.

For bikes yes, make sure you watch them or put locks. As far as your bags or what you leave on the beach have someone stay there because even though your in paradise, people will jack your stuff. Even with a car, dont leave your things in open sight. Yokohama hike is notorious for scrubs breaking and entering. Beautiful hike though.

Make sure you go to the Waianae Super (Tamura) and try the Poke. Kahuku super gets all the attention of having great poke but Waianae is way more flavorful. Aloha

I am from waianae and I recommend checking out Makua cave and further past that out to yok's (kaena point) for a little hike past where the road ends. Look up Hawaiian mythology about "The leaping place of the souls!".

I use to live in Waianae. Integrity valley by the elementary school. I use to climb that mountain that has a water tank. But your right on the side of Waianae high. You living where my friend used to live that back road. So when you when up the mountain at 1:55 what that behind you. Is that all a lake of solar panels? I think that by the old dump or behind the homes . A lot has changed haven been out there in a while. I use t climb the mountain right across the street when ever I felt like.

I got a new one for the west side. Today I driving home to Makaha. While at a stop light at old govt. rd. And Farrington I saw a man beating a woman on the ground behind his truck at the gas pumps at Tesoro. After a few seconds of watching this the light changed green and I stepped on it and got in front of the car next to me. I then got into the Tesoro lot where the guy buy this time just dragged this girl into his truck and closed the door. I called 911about the time the guy took off. I was talking to the dispatcher telling her what happened and this guys location. This went on for 5 or 10 minutes until it got unsafe for me to keep maneuvering. The last message to 911 was he is going toward town on Farrington hope you catch him. The fucked up thing is, I stopped because I was driving with one hand because I am in a sling from shoulder surgery a few weeks ago. I was still willing to go into Tesoro and physically stop this assault and and kidnapping even though I was impaired. But while I was on Farrington trying to go to the rescue I saw several big local guys just watching this while pumping there gas, not even doing anything.

Waianae is a very homogenous place to say the least, not many Asians there, but mostly Pacific Islanders. I’ve passed through it many times and hate to say its reputation as dangerous and hostile to outsiders is pretty true
