It really is dangerous and a lot of tourist AND locals have died from being swept out. Please as a local from Hawaii, be careful! It’s pretty sad seeing people on the news dying because they weren’t being cautious!

Wish I could upvote you 1000X. I plead guilty of going to the "toilet bowl" but that area of the coast is about as dangerous as it gets. Just go to Sandys and watch the gonzo kids on their boogie boards
I came here because I just read about a strong swimmer (and former surfer) who died here with his 2 young kids visiting this place from out of town, when a strong tide came out of nowhere and swept them out to sea.
Meanwhile I'm laying on my bed trying to comment on every youtube video

Pronunciation has nothing to do with race or skin color.
Most Hawaii residents pronounce it with only 2 stressed syllables, like ---> Wai + manalo.
The citation form ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi pronunciation has 3 stressed syllables, like ---> Wai + mā + nalo.
If the girl saw it written "Waimānalo" then the "ā" may have actually thrown her off.

Thanks for the "Tour." I used to live in Waimanalo(Why-Ma-nal-oh) and spent a lot of time at Makapuu, Hang gliding & Body surfing. I did not know about Makapuu Pools. They are on my Priority List, next visit to Oahu. You should put the Kalalau Trail on your Priority List. There is an incredible pool, back in the Kalalau Valley that will blow you away. The Kalalau is a 10 hour hike on the Island of Kauai.

The tide pools are beautiful if y'all ever make it to Hawaii the island of Oahu ( I'm pretty sure there are others on the other Islands), it's a sight to see it's pretty treacherous to get there though just take your time.

We've been whale watching from Makapu'u for 40 years and Dec. through March you're likely to see them. The trails you used were new. We just had a dirt road. around the other side. But
lat time we were up there a whale gave us a fabulous show. We and the other folks there counted 36 tail slaps from one whale. No one knows why they do that, but we figured he was showing off for a possible partner or maybe even for us. They know we're there and sometimes they come up close and turn their eyes to look at us. The tide pools don't entice me at all.
They have few fish and maybe here and there a turtle. When the big wave came up, it was clear from your footage that the tide was coming up. Time fo go!

I've hiked to the tide pools near the old airport in KONA. Super cool but dangerous to enter and exit the water on the jagged lava rock. Where I was you could swim through the channels out into the open water. kinda scary.

I did swimming lessons one year and when they told me to jump off the diving board, I hid in the bathroom and waited for my dad to think I was in there for a suspiciously long amount of time. Long story short, he took me home when he found me in the bathroom and I never took swimming lessons again

This area is off-limits DO NOT ENTER! Father and daughter swept out and killed also July 2021 a 21 year old swept out and killed. More have been unexpectedly swept out of tide pools only to meet their demise. If you have common sense you won't take the risk, not worth it.
