Everton defeated Southampton 6-1, but the day ended in disappointment as Liverpool won elsewhere to secure the title. Mountfield, Steven, Lineker (3) and Sharp were the Everton scorers.
Can remember just moments before the third goal, a rumour went round that David Speedie had scored for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to make it 1-1. Had that been true of course, it would have set up possibly the greatest end to a title race ever. Everton vs West Ham would have been the game where the winner would be crowned champions and a draw would have handed the title to Liverpool. Sadly Speedie hadn't scored
