    I have the same instrument that I bought directly from the maker. So yeah, I paid an arm and a leg.
    What I love about this instrument is that you can use guitar strings and tune it any way you want. it came tuned as an octave mandolin, and I found that as a guitar player the frets were too far apart for me to be able to finger mandolin chords. So instead, I’ve had it tuned as an eight string baritone ukulele (think 12 string guitar, without the low E and A) with octaves on the D and G, and right now I have it tuned like a standard ukulele (G C E A) and every pair of strings has a bass and an octave. It’s a really cool sound!

    I bought a used Washburn over 11 years ago that was stuffed in a corner of Musicians Alley in Sandusky Ohio, It had horribly old rusty strings, but it still sounded great. I still play that guitar every week as a worship leader. I'd love to get something better, but it still sounds great.

    Your channel has really inspired me to pick up an acoustic again, I've always been more of an electric player, and now that all the acoustics I had lying around are gone, I've ordered an M20 ;) looking forward to getting it for sure

      Tell me how it goes! M20 guild or Pono? Confusing, they're both M20's.

    Hey Jeremy, I’ve been watching your videos for a while now. Great stuff man. I’m in Mandeville Louisiana and I saw in one of your videos that you used to live around here. I was watching today and saw that Bo helped you out with your Pono. I met Bo at C&M music a few years ago. Bo is an awesome guy for sure. We hooked up at Billy Strings concert last year at Tipatina’s when my wife bailed out. Once he moved to Nashville, he helped me out with a 1949 D-18 from Carter’s. I trusted him enough to to pick out a killer vintage player for me and man did he deliver. Bo is a good guy with a excellent ear for tone. Thanks so much for your videos Jeremy. I’ve been craving a vintage D-28 and I was born in 1967 so your recent purchase in your other video had me hurting for that guitar LOL. Keep up the videos brother. I enjoy the heck out of them.

      Mandeville! Love it. Go eat a Bears Poboy for me.
      Bo is a dear friend and a tone wizard.

    You ever play one of Ibanez’s Artwood guitars? I have the 240opn(open pore natural ) and it outplays guitars I own 5-6times the price...was $300...HIGHLY recommended...all solid mahogany, bone nut and saddle, binding on the body and fretboard, great Grover tuners, fingerboard is like an ebony(Ovangkol)...the projection this this puts out is incredible...a wonderful blues, fingerstyle guitar, great strummer too, but really shines when being finger picked

    I have basically the same problem with a Deering Solana Six banjo. Loved the nylon strings, but could find quality, long lasting strings that sound good with a ball end. Basically took the same route as you (tying to old ball ends). VERY inspiring, and is now my main instrument both at home AND out.

    I insert balls onto loop-ends all the time.The trick is to know how much you can uncoil before breakage occurs on each gauge strings and how to fix ones that breaks. Daddario are best to add balls to because their metallurgy is the most consistent.

  • @steveb9325
    @steveb9325 Před 4 lety

    Strings by mail has ball ends you can buy to attach to those strings. They also sell strings. Go to their website

  • @TimGuitarLessons
    @TimGuitarLessons Před 4 lety

    Guster Easter egg! Haha nice. Out of curiosity, how did you try to attach the ball to the end of the loop strings that caused them to break? I couldn’t quite make out how you were trying to attach them...

    • @JeremySheppard
      @JeremySheppard  Před 4 lety +1

      Twisting them with the needle nose pliers. I was going to go more in depth but it seemed a smidge boring and hard to film.

    • @TimGuitarLessons
      @TimGuitarLessons Před 4 lety

      Jeremy Sheppard Gotcha... I know you said you’ll likely just buy strings from the manufacturer in the future to not have to deal with the inconvenience... but I wonder with your other loop packs, if you ran the top of the string through the ball so that the ball sits on the loop with the string running through it, and then ran the top of the string through the loop if it would cinch well enough that you could then seat the ball end into the bridge and pin it like normal? Not sure if that makes sense...

    • @JeremySheppard

      I had that thought too.

    KR Strings in Hawaii makes strings specially for your instrument. I believe he was actually the luthier who designed the Pono Octaves.

      @JeremySheppard  Před 4 lety +1

      You're right, I found that out right around the time I was filming this video. I just don't like only having one choice for strings. Have you played them? Do you like them?

      @@JeremySheppard yes I have them on a guitar to octave conversion me and my dad did, they seem well paired, only draw back is they took a very long time to be shipped.

  • @erickleefeld4883
    @erickleefeld4883 Před 4 lety

    I would just figure out what string gauges to use, then send away for the individual acoustic guitar strings from Ernie Ball or D’Addario (take your pick) to get the job done.
    Also, here's a question: Can you switch between matched pairs on the two lower courses, or instead have one low string and one octave string like a 12-string guitar?

  • @joshualovesbluegrass9422
    @joshualovesbluegrass9422 Před 4 lety +1

      Pono sell them directly and Stringjoy can make them up. Let's hang and you can check it out sometime.

    Hi,
    Luv your channel, great guitar information, enjoy your guitar playing. I’m looking to purchase a mandolin for under $7k; currently own an Eastman 614. Would very much appreciate your recommendation regarding what to buy, your thoughts on the Gibson F9?

    • @JeremySheppard
