In English, pneu is pronounced as nju (according to Oxford UK dictionary). Similar to how tsunami is sunami, and pterodactyl is teri.../tero... etc.
This is because of difficulty of pronunciation, or because it doesn’t fit into typical English pronunciation conventions.
These are official changes and aren’t done because one person decided one day to randomly start pronouncing something wrong. This is almost exclusively an English thing.
It’s like adding unnecessary accents to croissant and other foreign words. You don’t need to, and it *_sometimes_* sounds a little extra. Maybe where it isn’t is when using French vowels or Japanese consonants (i.e. tsu VS su).
Sorta important when ACTUALLY speaking the language, though.
