    • @lucasfabisiak9586
      @lucasfabisiak9586 Před 3 lety +106

      Exactly. The proposition 'truth is subjective' can't be true, since this would generate a contradiction. One would paradoxically have to believe in objective truth to believe the proposition is true.

      wait, is truth the only objective thing in the universe? discussion.

    • @lucasfabisiak9586
      @lucasfabisiak9586 Před 3 lety +42

      @@larsswig912 Truth must be objective because anything else is self-contradictory. The proposition 'truth is objective' is an analytic truth. It's like the proposition 'all bachelors are unmarried men'. If you think you've found a married bachelor, you haven't. You are mistaken. Similarly, if you think you've stumbled upon some 'truth' that is subjective, what you've stumbled upon is either false or actually objectively true. Since 'truth is objective' is an analytic truth, the predicate concept 'objective' is contained within or identical with the subject concept 'truth'. If it is a relation of identity, then the only objective things in the universe are truths. If not, there may be things that are objective but not truths, but I have a rather hard time wrapping my mind around this. It strikes me as an incoherent proposition.

      Most people tend to believe in absolute truth, so it's kind of hard to match it to a specific personality type. I just thought of INFJ because, first of all, they're the rarest personality type, and second because they tend to be egalitarian types, which might easily morph into a sort of cultural/moral relativism (and by extension, ideas about subjective truth). It may be a stretch, but this was not at all scientific and just something I did to pass the time (lockdowns suck).

I feel like I became an INTP because both of my parents were mentally ill, so I couldn't express how I was feeling for fear of some irrational overreaction, like they'd blame themselves and do something stupid. So I repressed all my feelings and only ever expressed my rational side in reaction to all the irrationality surrounding me. Even now, I only find it so easy to talk like this just because I'm talking to total strangers that I'll never actually meet in person. In practice; it's more like an inner monologue.

    “Truth is subjective.” - As an ENTP, I have to disagree with the notion that an ENTP would never say that. Yes, on the surface that statement is false since the very definition of truth requires objectivity. However, in a world where misinformation and miscommunication is so prevalent, people often have very different sets of “facts.” In a simple conversation where two people are trying to understand each others perspectives, it’s important to acknowledge that everyone involved likely has valid reasons behind their beliefs. For this reason, accepting that truth - or rather, our perceptions of truth - is subjective can make communication more effective.
