How to Make Wood Rings with Veneer

- How to make wooden rings otherwise known as bentwood rings without fancy tools! All you need is some veneer, a knife, CA glue (super glue/krazy glue) and some sandpaper. These rings get their strength from the layers of veneer and glue. Because they are layered they are much stronger than a ring turned on a lathe with a hold drilled out. Anybody can make these rings as they are super easy and quick to produce. My wife and I wear these as our wedding rings. Since they are made of wood they will need some care and refinishing once in a while. In this example I'm using sapele and maple as I like the contrast of the two woods.
If you're using a drill bit as your template you'll need to find the equivalent bit size in MM. Ring sizes in MM can be found here:

very nice David! I ended up with some really thin teak scraps yesterday and set them aside since I knew this video was coming! Can't wait to give this a shot, great video!
I'd love to see photos when you're done!
Wow, what a journey! Congrats David! 🎉
WOW your videos have changed so much, love all your stuff!
Hello David:
Good video. I have made rings on a lathe but never stopped to figure out the sizes! The chart you posted will certainly take care of that!
Thanks for the video
Larry
Thank you very much for this great tutorial! I really appreciate that you show how to do it with and without the lathe. The drill trick is awesome! My boyfriend and I were looking for wood rings as engagement rings (I did say yes hehe) and it is so difficult to find them. Now we can make our own :-)
Great project - the funky background beat was awesome!
That funky background music! Love it!
How very interesting to understand these wood working processes. Now I won't think its magic at a craft fair! Some valuable tips here, many thanks!
Simple.. And very nice result. I'll be giving this a try soon.
new sub .. best version of this project I have seen ! I have a cheap Chinese lathe this is a great wee cool project to get me started !! thanks
I was literally just thinking about if this would work earlier today instead of turning the whole thing from a solid block. Great video!
I must try this when I have a spare hour or two. great video.
On my need to try list. Thanks.
Awesome video. Thanks for posting!
awesome project. can't wait to make one for myself.
My findings on this project:
1. aside from getting straight grain veneer you want FINE grain veneer, basically as fine as possible, because else the preparing process will be harder. The finer the grain is on the veneer, the easier it is to get the strips into shape without risking possible chips breaking off or the veneer splitting.
2. give your strips a bath in any temperature water overnight and finish it up by bringing the water up to the boil for an our or two. The extra soak the veneer gets sure does help plying your strips into shape
3. Make sure you know your ring size and get a dowel slightly smaller (if you use EU ring sizes I'd stick to getting 1 size smaller. i.e. from 22 -> 21 ring size). For some reason my ring turned out bigger than I expected on the ring size 22 that I scaled my middle finger to be. It fits more snugly around my thumb than it does around my middle finger.
4. be very weary with how thick you make the ring. I find 3 - 4 revolts is more than sufficient to make a decent thickness ring. Any more and the ring will probably be too fat for most people's liking.
5. Get consistend pressure when making your ring. Else the sides will have dark spots in them (which is basically the dried up glue concentrated in 1 spot). This will be hard to perfect at first, but make some more and you'll get the hang of it
Aside from everything mentioned above. This project is great and it's fun to do. You could even go as far as to make your own One ring by engraving the inscription in the ring. To do that I'd say you get yourself a engraving pen for a couple quid and engrave away!

Frank van Zutphen Great post.
Thanks for that post. That was awesome.
you sir, have a subscriber. Beards, beer and wood working, my kind of guy.
Lol great ending
Keep up the great work x
Wow! Watching one of your older video’s, you’ve come a long way brother 👌🏼
Nice work brother !
Wood Rings! Super Genius!
Very original. Liked
Nice video. I loved the overview at the beginning. It is nice to get the big picture before getting into the detailed steps.
Thanks!
Ah dude, I'm sorry that she said no. But hey, she didn't leave yet and you still have your ring! ha ha.
Great video David! I love the funky background music. Take me back to being a kid. I made some of these rings but using a shaving from a handplane. I made a video here on the tube also. I will send some pics to share if you like.
Later, Brett
Thanks for the pics! What a great idea using hand plane shavings!!!
Gran finale! Kkk cool project my friend
My baby sister just told me about this and I had to see this wooden ring idea. I am amazed at your creativity, drunken woodsman! Oh, excuse me there - drunken woodworker! I'm amazed! Okay, maybe not amazed but pretty cool stuff. Zebra wood would be neat on a ring!
Ain't you a little old for a baby sitter?
Drunken Woodworker That's what everyone says until they meet me and then everything just goes to heck. I'm a mad scientist! A raving mad and crazy mad scientist with the adventurous mind of a 12-year-old.
So many semantics with some people. ;)
This is a super neat project. I'm going to make a few blanks to practice, but I plan I'm making a couple with gem inlays; I hope they come out well!
I'm also glad you linked the veneer on Amazon. The reviews kinda put me off, but I'm sure that if you're using them then they aren't all bad.
When I first saw this it intimated me with the lathe work. Now I think i can tackle it with with out one... no sure how yet lol.
Superb....Thanks!!
Very impressive sir, now i have something to do with excess pieces lying around the shop!
Two big thumbs up!!!
Awesome!
Great project. The end of the video cracked me up. Smart girl: no ring, but she'll take your beer! Haha!
Nice video
I wonder if it would work well to wrap the veneer around in a spiral fashion so you would essentially have a scarf join and the grain would be at an angle in the final ring.
Hi David, when applying the CA glue as a finish how do you prevent the ring from being glued to the dowel rod ?
pretty cool! i'd probably use wood glue though instead of super glue. it's easier to work with, and its still just as strong (stronger than the wood, which is all that matters)
+Thomas Pfeifer Thanks! The problem is wood glue takes too long to dry. You need super glue because it dries in a few seconds.
With out proper tools like a lathe. It doesn't come out like what you see. Lots of veneer breaks because of thecway the grain goes. If you don't have it as tight as possible, it won't come out right. I have been trying for months to get a really good ring without tools. Also, ginding just takes the veneer off. Hope you have a fan. Good luck.
I bought that same pack of veneer you made the link to.
it was all to thick were can I find thinner veneer?
Awesome! Im going to make one for me and for my gf.
Thanks!! I have another ring video coming out in a few days. There may be some more tips and tricks in it.
Cool!
What do you think is better for a protective finish, wax, oil, varnish, CA glue or UV resin?
Lol that ending was funny
how long of strip do you need approximately? do you need enough to do 2 full rotations?
Good night, where I buy these sheets of wood and how to flame, to make rings, finally what you put on the cloth, thank you Fernando
Love it! What kind of wood do you suggest to start with? And where do you buy the veneer? (sorry if someone else already asked)
Dear David Picciuto The Drunken Woodworker, but WHO (in the name of all things funky, dirty and grooveLICIOUS) is playing the Clav on the background music?!! It does funny things to my trousers... Mm-mm-mmmn...
PS: Nice rings ;) x
Toby Kennedy h
What did you use for a finish on this. You sprayed something on it at the end? If making this for someone who has sensitive skin do you recommend any less toxic finishes/glue? Also, how may layers of veneer could one use? I like the idea of 3- maple, cherry, then maple but not sure if that would make it too thick?
COOL !
Thanks man)
Now I need not to forget to send you my variations. Used to develop a similar techinique for the other projects)
Great video. What thickness veneer did you use and what type of wood?
when you put the final coat of ca glue on the outside of the ring will it be waterproof? (swimming, showering ect?)
Sweet project! A beer should help with the sting of rejection. lol
This is going to make some nice gifts
hi! nice work! what is the spray that you put in the end? thanks :)
Hi. I've never used CA glue to finish wood. Interesting, but doesn't the ring stick to the dowel if you get even a little bit of glue on it?
Make Something got few questions isn't veneer real wood? Also think I could layer veneer and build a acoustic guitar from gluing layers of veneer together?
That's a really cool idea. Nice work on the project and video. "No thanks"... Hehe. Ouch! At first I was expecting a real proposal. But no, instead you got your beer stolen.
I recently bought the veneer on a roll at Lowe’s. Boiling and glueing came out perfect and super strong. But while I’m sanding there like a gum that builds up. Is there a way to remove it or did I buy the wrong type of veneer?
Love it!! I am gonna make one too....Is is possible to mark alphabet wording on the ring? like name or else?
¡¡Wonderful!!
So I made some only I used water resistant wood glue and they are still very strong. Is there an advantage to using CA glue? and what finish did you use? Loved the video Thanx *o*.
can i use wood veneer edging to make these
I’ve got pre glued veneer, will that work?
Would I be able to carve images onto the ring? Also, can I put some kind of colored finish on it? (And just out of curiosity, if I put finish over the carvings, will the carving still be clearly visible?)
Hey the Drunken Woodworker, I have watched a few of your videos and they are very interesting as I've wanted to replicate some of these projects. Can you do a video on making a wood cribbage board? Thanks
how do you keep the veneer from being glued to the blank
Where can you buy wood vinyl that thin? I can't find it at the local commercial hardware stores
Would it be possible to make a ring with multiple layers?
+AREEJ ASHRAF Any wood will do, but if you want the same looks, David's using Sapele and Maple.
Great video and project! Will have to try this. Ouch x 2. lol
Super, I will try it to my 5th aniversary, Wooden's Aniversary.
Yes!
bravissimo
bravo
nice job, can i write any name or number on ring ?with my inventable cnc
how long does it take for the ring to stop smelling like glue?
I just made one of these today. Really pleased with how it turned out, but it ended up just a tad too large for my finger. Would it be possible to add a layer to the inside of the ring and then sand to fit? Any other suggestions?
FYI, I was able to glue another layer to the inside, and now it fits perfectly and still looks great!
Took your beer too??! Smart woman..
Hey make something,
Does the spray on coating ever irritate your skin? Is there anything to coat it with that would protect sensitive skin? Can't wait to try his out.
+overload889 Doesn't irritate me but I could see how it would for others. You could use bee's wax or even mineral oil as well.
+Make Something Sounds good, I've got both of those handy! Well, that worked out
Haha, humorous ending! I did indeed laugh 3 times.
what was it that you sprayed on ?
Just saw your rings in an advert for a drill press ring maker. Was a facebook advert for a U.K. Based company called shoprizy. Thought you might like to know. Took a screenshot but can't add picture here.
I'm trying to purchase the same 2P-10 adhesive you're using, but the website says I have to spray an activator on the other end. I don't see you doing that in the video. Can you please let me know if I'll need the activator?
Thanks
Spray activators or kickers just make the glue dry within a few seconds. You can manage just fine without it you just have to wait like a minute for the glue to dry
Hi David, very nice work, and a great idea ! I was just wondering about something... Instead of using some boiled veneers, do you think using hand plane shavings can simplify the process ? They are already curved, uh ?
Yep. I just learned about Brett's channel today and he makes them with shavings. Check it out! czcams.com/video/lY0zkIG6tb8/video.html
that end clip though xD
It's missing something without the conga music. Long live the conga music!
which is the recommended thickness??
I'm only 13 and I wanna make it for my mother can you please help me? I couldn't find that which wood is this pls tell me! I just love it and i want my handmade in my mother's hand i shall be very grateful to you!!
I saw this on eBay, can I use this as well? ''Guitar Parts Rosewood Head Veneer Headstock luthier Tonewood''
I found my late Fathers jeweler's lathe. Oh I'm setting it up. Nice
Wow.... you have changed so much
New ring video coming out next!
Love it!! You need to update your avatar with a beard pic..... Keep up the good work!!
I know!
Love the ending. PS, Please let me know when the 3x shirts are in.
Will do. Hopefully in the next day or two.
Hi Mike! 3x's are in!!

No where do I see the thickness of the veneer. Not in the video, the comments, or on the Amazon link description. What is the thickness that you use, please? Thanks!! Nice job on the ring! I'm definitely going to try that out!! Great video!
I have idea of the thickness. Thin enough to where it's bendable. :)
Thickness of the veneer that I use is 0.6 mm. It is the most common thickness that you can find.
i just leave them to dry for two hours on my radiator. it works like a charm.
I bought a variety pack of veneers a few weeks ago to try this but still haven't, need to figure out my ring size and use the right drill bit since i dont have a lathe
I've been thinking of other ways to do this. Maybe take some masking or duct tape and start rolling it onto itself until it's as big as your finger and use that as your template?
Thought about that or using a newspaper or magazine, i don't know what my ring size is anyway so could make it a little small and just sand out the middle until it fits. Sanding and finishing might take a little more time without the drill bit method. I've got like 20 sqft to practice with so I'll figure it out eventually.
cuanto tiempo tienes las maderas metidas en el agua hirviendo?
1 ora
I know this is an old video but How are the rings holding up? I have heard CA glue deteriorates over time and cracks, is it true? I want to try one of these.
We only wear our rings for 1 year and then retire them and make new ones. The CA glue holds up just fine. But the wood receives wear gets dinged up.
I will give it a whirl with a beer in the shop!
Would you recommend epoxy instead of ca at all? x
Epoxy doesn't dry fast enough for these.
On the lathe, what did you spray on the ring?
I think it's spray lacquer
where did you get the laith.
