  • There are very few things I get more excited about finding on an old VHS tape than Wacaday, and the reason is simple: it doesn't just take me back, but it takes me back directly to the *school holidays*. I suspect this edition may come from Tuesday, 28th May, 1991 - though I'm willing to be corrected on that - and Timmy Mallett is teaching us all about the Channel Islands. Today, he visits Jersey, looking at cows and seafood and the squillionaires - that sort of thing.
The young co-stars, just so they can find this if they're Googling themselves, are Gabrielle (or Gabi) from London and Michael Ellis from Ramsbottom. They have the usual game of Mallett's Mallet and join in all the silliness before, I'm sorry to say, the recording is cut short. Stick around after that, though, for a tiny, tiny clip of another edition that was right at the end of the same tape (but I've edited them together here).
Many thanks to David for providing this tape.

OMG it’s me!! Just saw Timmy Mallet in the paper today and thought I’d try to see if the show I went on was here. I did the smallest search and found myself and Michael. I was literally looking at photos of the experience just a day or so ago. I can’t believe it’s online. I’m such a funny little dork lol (Gabi)

I love Wacaday, really takes me back to when I was a kid, it wasn't often I'd wake up in time to see it from the beginning though, even as a kid I was never a morning person 😂

Good fun to watch! I always recalled that one of the children used to seem like they were far too shy to appear in the show!

Yeah you do get the occasional child who is really nervous around a camera, bless them.

It always annoyed me whenever one of them went completely blank on Mallett's Mallet. The one thing they _knew_ in advance that was definitely going to happen, yet they clam up! (Mind you, maybe I'd have done the same under the studio lights...)

If not for Pinky Punky and the scoring machine in Mallett's Mallet, I'd have aged this as being a 1980's edition. The titles don't look familiar, the set doesn't look entirely familiar, even that particular version of scoring machine I don't recall ever seeing before. This is a rogue run of Wacaday. Mind you, I think I only used to watch it in the summer holidays. Any other time of the year, I simply tended to forget that it was on during any other school holidays.
Peak Wacaday for me was back when they hit the kids on the head with the Mallet, pre-Pinky Punky and when Michaela Strachen co-hosted. I still loved it after that era, but I loved it a little more before that point. I find it a very interesting show to look back upon, and see how Timmy and the team developed something of legend out of literally a corner of the TV-am studio and no money. Those very early editons, mid 80's, it was literally Mallett winging it for half an hour. But he did it, he was bright, loud, silly, funny and even educational. He really put the work in and created something out of next to nothing.

If I'm not mistaken these were probably produced live. But yeah they probably swapped props quite often during each school holiday period, but yeah they just likely made do with what they got.

@97channel "...literally Mallett winging it for half an hour... developed something of legend out of literally a corner of the TV-am studio and no money." Absolutely hit the nail on the head there! I love the story of the lyrics of the theme tune being so vague because at the point they recorded the song all they had was a title and no idea of what the show was actually going to be.

I'm really sorry to say that the tape run out during this episode, otherwise I couldn't have had a full episode right there. So sorry no Blahrgerac here. :D But still, I'm glad to hear that at least this partial episode has given you a right hit of nostalgia. :) I'm hoping the same will b for anyone else who finds this clip. :)

No need to apologise at all - in the VHS-searching business, we're always happy with whatever we get! And, like I say, I'm always delighted to find _any_ Wacaday clips, no matter how long! :-)

I once met a couple at Glastonbury festival who said that Timmy Mallett was a regular at there local pub, and he still acts like he's a mega star (this was in 2014) surreal memory, I'm pretty sure it did happen and it wasn't a drug induced dream.
