- It's rare in the nostalgia business for something to be a lot better that you remember, but I think Wacaday may just fit that description. This episode from the end of the 1991 summer holidays is so much better than I thought it would be.
One thing that's surprising is how educational the show was. Of course was all remember Timmy Mallett for being several bricks short of a load, but that report about South African apartheid is unbelievably good. Not preachy, no anger, not even especially political; but the way he explains it simply and concisely enough for children to understand, before pausing and looking down the barrel and asking, "It's not fair, is it?" really got me. I wonder what kids today would make of it.
But anyway, the theme of the show was obviously South Africa, and there are plenty of silly visual puns that were par for the course: wearing a Cape (of Good Hope), a twin-peaked cap, the Table (Mountain) etc. etc. Then there's Mallett's Mallett, the word association game where you mustn't pause and mustn't hesitate, the phone-in quiz Chat and Splat, and all manner of other WAC-iness, ably assited by the guests of the day Jane ("Pandelli"? - can't make it out) of Harrow and David from Darlington.
I'm afraid the very beginning of the episode is missing, but you do get some retro ads in the middle. (Dizzy Dizzy Dinosaur, McDonalds, Shreddies, "Splat!", Butterkist popcorn, Sylvanian Families, Ribena.)
Major shout out to Neil for providing this recording. You can view his fantastic Sooty-related channel here: / thesootyshoworg - highly recommended.
(Please remember that this is an off-air video recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. Also, apologies for the one-legged sound. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. That said, if you are a copyright holder and object, please don't hesitate to contact me.) - Zábava
I loved this! Really brings back the glorious days when I was a youngster!
I never missed an episode of Wacaday. Timmy Mallett was great
You're very welcome! Bringing back happy memories is what I try to specialise in. :-)
I was on Wacaday! An episode where they visit Weston Super Mare and the Aswan Dam!!
Spent my entire day looking haha! Thanks for the upload!
@@BigSmokinJoe Oh, you're very welcome - I'd have loved to have been on the show! It's a needle in a haystack, but whenever I find any Wacaday I'm sure to upload it, so hopefully yours will show up one day. Here's hoping!
I used to always get Wacaday and The Wide Awake Club mixed up. Timmy Mallet was a proper banana wasn't he, lol. Great upload as always VideotapeFTW and as per usual, excellent description.
i remember this episode as we made those WAC to front pictures at brownie's the week after
Thank you very much! The way I remember it, Wide Awake Club was a much slicker operation, while Wacaday had a feel of them winging it and somehow getting by by the seat of their pants. Somehow, that made it better. :-)
Timmy was great.
Summer holidays mornings were unique with TV. ITV and BBC knew how to care for the viewers especially kids and worth waking up for.
I wonder whether the kids of today will look back as fondly on current children's TV in 30 years' time as much as we do now. I doubt it...
Doubt it. 80's were the best.
I think the lad probably meant bluebells, Timmy.
It really sounds like you're sitting on an absolute gold mine of video recordings. As soon as you've got the spare time, for the good of Britain's collective childhoods you simply must digitise them!
But, yes, some people simply couldn't get past the wackiness of Timmy Mallett and see the good (and educational) side of the show. Just because it wasn't as "straight" as Blue Peter (or whatever) doesn't mean it didn't inspire us!
Unless I'm misremembering, Wacaday used to be criticised left, right and centre for its general wackiness and unhinged presenter. Looking back, it's disappointing that they (whoever "they" are) didn't get fully behind such great programming. If you look at the stuff that the viewers sent in, it was obviously inspiring impressive creativity in kids!
I don't remember this version of Mallets Mallet where Timmy bonks a score board instead of the Kid's heads.
Most of us have blocked it out of our memories - I think it was due to complaints from parents and teachers that they had to settle on this compromise.
According to Wikipedia the producers became concerned that young children might imitate Timmy Mallett but use harder objects to hit each other.
Its was better when he did on the heads. Heathy and safty starting to go crazy lo
Yeah, Mallett's Mallet was never the same once Timmy was forced to hit that contraption instead. One too many complaints from parents, I believe...
Ring raiders xd
You're welcome! I've got one more, which I've just uploaded:
