    in Scotland we have shinty ,a Scottish twelve-a-side game resembling hockey, played with curved sticks and taller goalposts and derived from the Irish game of hurling.

      @Peacelily Shinty and Hurling was the same game hundreds of years ago. Look at the old hurling sticks and the Shinty sticks they are very similar. My son played with an Ulster Gaelic speaking hurling team along with a hurling team from Galway over in Scotland against Shinty teams. Ireland also plays against the Scottish shinty team each year also. If you tune into BBCAlba you can watch the Shinty league games

    They didn't add "+ the skills of the egg-and-spoon race", but it fits. It's a very old game - three thousand years is commonly quited, and I don't know how accurate that is or how they know, but there are certainly literary references going back well over a thousand years. The legendary hero Cú Chulainn played it.

    Hurling is a game that archeology confirms is at least 2000 years old. It was originally a method of training, used by Celtic kings and Chieftains to train warriors for battle. There are accounts of single games lasting several days. Today it is a regulated sport played entirely by amateurs. You play for your parish, town land, or county. There is a women's version of this beautiful sport called camogie. Either one is a thing of beauty to watch 🇮🇪

    It makes sense that when the Scots and Irish were turfed out their homes by the English and made their way to the US that the sports they created would take some, if not all of their home sports. So Scots have shinty and the Irish have hurling, both of which could have given birth to baseball, american football etc.

    Field hockey is a women’s sport here too, while the boys play rugby at school, the girls play hockey
    The ball they use, as I remember at least is much harder and heavier than I had anticipated at first and I’m imagining the ball they use in hurling to also be surprisingly hard and dense

    • @Quessir
      @Quessir Před 2 lety +2

      It is indeed. It's called a sliotar (pronounced "slitter") and is very hard, with even harder ridges traveling around it. It consists of a core made of cork, surrounded by leather. They experimented with rubber core sliotars a few years ago but found they made the bounce much too unpredictable and the ball traveled too fast, so they've gone back to the cork core sliotar.

    Hurlers learn from a very young age where not to put their heads. A hurley is also far lighter than a field hockey stick, and far more flexible. We don't get many injuries from strikes with the hurley, perhaps the odd broken finger. Most injuries our elite players suffer are hamstrings and cruciate ligaments. The best hurlers are nimble of foot, and this puts a strain on the legs.

  • @shanenolan8252
    @shanenolan8252 Před 2 lety +6

    Bat is called a Hurley or hurl . The say its 3 thousand plus . Which is true but its al less 5 thousand years old ( the game ) its hard to be sure because it was invented before Ireland used writing. The helmet is optional. Some play better without. Oh it the most popular sport in Ireland but its an amateur game the players don't get paid they all have day jobs . But as you can see they have the fitness and skill of any professional athlete or better. The league wants to keep people playing for the love of the game rather than money or fame . You get expenses and some sponsorships from advertisers. If your very good .

    Please do more Irish Hurling reaction. Most astonishing fact? The players are *AMATEURS!*
    You might like a 'refresher', so here's a short 'Rules' video (720p video) (watch until 2:07):
    - 'The Rules of Hurling - EXPLAINED!' [2015] (4m0s) czcams.com/video/biFcgUB98ns/video.html
    Starts with facts, then snippets of game play for all 'does' and summarises don'ts. Game play is covered by 2:07. Maybe stop at that point 🤔 After 2:07, it's 'dry'; covering restarting play, fouls, and penalties. List of Fouls at 2m43s. Penalty rules have changed (no defenders).
    You've already reacted to:
    - 'Hurling - The Fastest Game on Grass' [2009] (5m21s) czcams.com/video/TmzivRetelE/video.html
    There's an error (players can run 4 steps holding the ball), and it's so old that they don't mention since 2010 all players must wear head and face protection. IMO it's not as good on rules as 2:07 of 'EXPLAINED!'. However, it 'Hypes' the game well. So it made a great reaction video.
    Note: Senior inter-county matches last 70 minutes, the rest are 60 minutes, played in two halves.
    Maybe with a 'refresh', you could watch any game and get it 🤔😃
    You might watch 5½ minutes of a real game (it's Epic):
    - '2018 All-Ireland SHC Semi-Final: Cork v Limerick' czcams.com/video/NuT3jBl8-TE/video.html
    (start from 3m12s to 8m43s, game clock to 5m21s ) Five points are scored in 5m21s.
    It is end-to-end, very skilful, athletic and physical. They cover ground at breakneck speed.
    Or, you might choose to watch a short video concentrating on game play and skills:
    - 'The Magic of Hurling II HD' [2019] (3m41) czcams.com/video/I1Vw66Zs0dQ/video.html
    High quality video (1080p) showing players' speed, and highlighting skills in slow-mo. There's no explanation of the rules. However, it might be fine after a refresh of the rules.
    WARNING: If you watch a live game, use the toilet before starting. You won't dare pause or miss a second. Have plenty of 'fluids' and snacks on hand; watching hurling burns calories. 😃😃
    To be clear, I have no relationship with Hurling. Also, I'm English so it isn't about my National Game. Hurling is the Best Game/Sport I know.
    ----
    I don't go for conspiracy theories. However, I might pass them on ... 😀
    Hurling is so much better than other globally-popular team sports, that maybe the 'Big Money' sports actively conspire to keep Hurling off global TV. Who'd watch any other sport if Hurling was available? Further, when people learn that Hurling players are *amateurs*, who'd want to watch players who are paid enough each week to feed a couple of thousand kids for a week?
