- We are taught in art school to mix our blacks instead of using black paint right out of the tube to make them more colorful. I am here to tell you now that I no longer mix my blacks but instead start with a Holbein Peach Black and when I want it more colorful I mix colors into the black instead.
Lunar Black (Daniel Smith) is very granular and fun to use. Thanks for this demo.
people, mostly other watercolor artists, tell me to never use black, but I LOVE making black and white watercolor paintings, or using black in my paintings, for effect. My favorite is Daniel Smith's Lunar black, which is super granulating.
I so enjoy ALL of your videos. Granted, I have to watch some of them weeks after you've done them, but with each one I learn more and more about how to be a better artist. You truly inspire me to grow and further develop my skills.
Thank you for those kind words... I love teaching people like yourself that want to be a better artist!
Thank you. I am a little tired of the art police. I like blacks; they’re colors. Thank you for showing how to make unique blacks, and letting us love our lamp, lunar, and mars blacks!
I wish someone had explained this to me one time my art teacher had us using a limited palate with black substituting blue. All I had was ivory black, which is warm, so none of the colors that were supposed to be cool came out right. 😅
