  • I recently received a question about Neutral Tint -- What is it and how do you use it in a watercolor painting?
In this video, I show how to use Neutral Tint to make a value study. You can also use Neutral Tint with a limited palette to expand your color options. Check out the color that you can get from Hansa Yellow, Quinacridone Rose, and Neutral Tint.

Thanks for this very helpful demonstration! I just got a tube today and anxious to use it this evening. Semi-amazingly, I've been learning to paint with watercolor for a year now, reading many self-help books, watching videos and even taking a class twice a week, and I've not heard of neutral tint until some four days ago! Happy to subscribe! 🎨

That’s fascinating! I’ve never seen that done. Loved the yellow and teal applications. Thanks. Lisa

PB15 is actually Daniel Smith’s Manganese Blue Hue. It’s related to all the Phthalo blue pigments like PB15:1, PB15:3 and PB15:6 but the pigment particles are much larger in PB15 which is why, (unlike the phthalos) it granulates and doesn’t stain, lifting from the paper much easier. The pigment is made from the same stuff tho.

Can you paint with colored watercolor on top of a neutral tint value painting?
