Thank you Jane! Do these same guidelines hold true for thickened dyes? I assume so with shades, but how would you tint a color since there is no such thing as white dye?
To tint with dye you would simply make a mixture that had less dye in it. That way the color won't be as deep and will in fact be a tint. Black dye is complicated because it isn't a pure color - other colors are put together to get the black result and in some situations (immersion dye bath, use of resists, ice dyeing for example) the colors react at different speeds and "split" so that you don't get black at all. HOWEVER there is now a pure gray dye and it could be used in roughly the same way that I demo'd with paint, since it won't split into a set of separate colors. Graying down the color may be all you really need when using dyes to generate a set of values from tints to shades.
