    1. What is a benchmark?
A benchmark is a program written in order to evaluate the performance of a (set of) component(s).
    2. Are real applications used to measure CPU performances?
Yes they are, although they are not the best choice of testcase to consider when benchmarking because of the presence of parasite in the testing (e.g. for a processor, they might be some I/O waiting time whose latency is independent of the component that is being tested.)
    3. The Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) is a non-profit corporation formed to establish, maintain and endorse standardized benchmarks and tools to evaluate performance and energy efficiency for the newest generation of computing systems. SPEC develops benchmark suites and also reviews and publishes submitted results from our member organizations and other benchmark licensees.
