- Alan Napier describes how he was cast in the role of Alfred the butler on the iconic sixties television series, "Batman", one of many stories he tells in his autobiography which is now on sale. The book can be purchased from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, as well as directly from the the publisher's website: mcfarlandbooks.com.
I really enjoyed reading Alan Napier's autobiography. He was so much more than simply "Batman's Butler."
He had class! Though I might not know him as anything else besides Alfred Pennyworth, I have a strong amount of Respect for him. He's currently helping Adam West fight crime in heaven.
Born just up the road from me in Kings Norton.....RIP Mr Napier
He was the BEST butler of all the Batman butlers.. hands down!
this was the perfect alfred. ill summon him sire.
Nice to see an interview of him where he gets to speak freely compared to that brief interview he did shortly before his death where the host interrupted him and took the microphone away from him.
It's The Bat Phone Sir.
I've got to read his autobiography! He's a wonderful actor!
"Crazy nonsense" goes to "I'll do it" once money comes up...absolute greatness, and it's a lot of fun spotting him in old movies (and extra bonus points for spotting Neil Hamilton in old silents). Alan Napier probably could have pulled off the role in the more serious movies, too.
Batman had an all star cast, everyone on that show was an established actor, a major celebrity in their own right.
A terrific biography, gracefully written, with insight into some of the sparkling personalities of stage and screen: Noel Coward, Gladys Cooper, Alfred Hitchcock, George Sanders, John Van Druten, Val Lewton and so many others.
RIP Alan Napier (aka Alfred). Only he knew Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, and Barbara Gordon's secret identities.
Sad how Napier is best remembered for Alfred; he had a long career in movies long before Batman. He was tall, devilishly handsome, and had a magnificent swimmer's build.
A class act!! Period 👍
a rather dignified fellow...too much civility, intelligence for the modern age.
And a great butler he was !!! Rest in peace alan
It's interesting that he actually looks a lot like Efram Zimbalist Jr., the Alfred from TAS.
I watched Batman when I was six years old and many a late afternoon pick up on the batmobile, funny I remember as if it had been today. And this gentleman with his characteristic elegance, always measured, sensible listened to the pair and advised them. I had a class of him contained in it, and seeing him speak I felt as if I were always his neighbor as our affective mind works and gives us a more meaningful kind of reality than what was experienced. My respect to this gentleman who never shaken my hand but is in my emotional gallery as something important. I always respect this artist.
-I said no!
Holy Moley!!! They finally published it! I'm ordering it!!!!!!
