Nightwish was the first band I discovered in the symphonic metal world. I have a lot of affection for this band, they have a lot of amazing songs, I recommend listening to some albums if you liked this music. There's even a (very old) movie named after this song. Here's a tip! Great video. :)
Tarja is the original singer without Tarja there is no Nightwish... Turunen studied singing at Sibelius Academy and Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. She is a professional classical lied singer, and the former lead vocalist of the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish, which she founded with Tuomas Holopainen and Emppu Vuorinen in 1996. Their combination of hard and fast guitar riffs with Turunen's dramatic, "operatic" lead vocals quickly achieved critical and commercial popularity. Their symphonic metal style, soon dubbed "opera metal", inspired many other metal bands and performers.
Tarja Turunen is a classically trained lyrical soprano, one of the founders of Nightwish. You should check her solo stuff, it`s amazing.

First time I saw this video.the lady has an amazing voice and the rock version of this song is outstanding.thanks for posting.
Furthermore, she not only sang the songs but lived them and as viewers we feel her intensity, she was (and still is) almost theatrical ! With Nightwish, she was always well dressed and very lady like looking, a very beautiful and kind person ! Her new musicians loves her so much that when someone can't be there at the spectacle they find themselves a replacement for the show so she won't have to do it herself ! I still follow her and she's very good at what she does these days !
Nightwish was from 1996 up to 2005 and this very concert mostly this line up. They created their style and sound and five albums plus extras up to this time. Actually the later members were substitutes for some of these guys.

Yes, Tarja (1st vocalist) is a trained opera singer. Marko Hietala on bass and vocals.
Not opera. Her speciality would be chamber music. But both a subset of Classical. Opera does not use ampliflucation. And phantom of the opera is not opera itself. But it has its arias for sure. Tarja ( Taa-rr-ee-a) holds a masters in music.
Original lead singer Tarja (Tar-ya) Turunen, and yes, she is classically trained. From 96-05 she sang on the first 5 albums and is the most operatic of the 3 female leads.
Floor is the 3rd and took over in 2012, second lead singer was Anette Olzon (07-12). Anette is more of a pop/rock style singer.
This is from the 2005 concert in Helsinki (End of an Era DVD), and it was her last with Nightwish. After the show, the guys gave her an open letter dismissing her from the band.
She has been a solo artist since then , and is still active today.
Marko Hietala is the bassist singing with her. He left the band early last year ,for personal reasons, after 2 decades. You've heard him sing with Floor, and now Tarja. He has the ability to sound good singing with almost anyone. He was the lead singer of a band called Tarot before joining Nightwish, and has sung lead in a few with them. Those few include The Islander(Tampere 2015) and their cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's High Hopes from this same 2005 show.
Tarja is more than classically trained, she IS a soprano. Floor is classically trained, and although she is a vocal coach herself, she’s not a soprano.
@@georgemaury You do realize that soprano is a vocal range, not a style, right? Floor is absolutely a soprano, with a vocal range of a little over 3 octaves, C3 to F6. Tarja is also a soprano; her range is slightly higher, going from F3 to B6.
Tarja's training was almost exclusively classical, whereas Floor's training was more geared towards rock singing although she did have a year of opera training as well.
Any reason why she was dismissed like that?
Tarja was in classical music training when she and Tuomas founded Nightwish. That day the gods smiled.

In 2007, Turunen released My Winter Storm, an album featuring various styles including symphonic metal, and started the Storm World Tour. She performed several concerts in Europe, playing in metal festivals including the Graspop Metal Meeting and the Wacken Open Air, before releasing her third album, What Lies Beneath, supported by a tour, which lasted until April 2012. Her first live DVD Act I was filmed during this tour on 30 and 31 March 2012 in Rosario, Argentina. Act I was released in August 2012.Turunen started the Colours in the Dark World Tour in October 2013 to promote her new album Colours in the Dark. Her second live DVD was filmed during the events of Beauty and the Beat and was released in May.
In September 2015, Tarja Turunen released her first classical studio album, Ave Maria - En Plein Air. In August 2016 she released The Shadow Self with a prequel EP The Brightest Void released on 3 June. Her latest album In the Raw, was released on 30 August 2019.
Update her latest work is Outlanders in the works since 2014. Teaming up with world class musicians for a stripped down sound. Including Land of Sea and air with Vernon Reed lead guitarist for Living Colour. As well as her autobiography Singing in my blood. And a 2nd season as coach on The Senior Voice Finland. Her student won. She was doing the summer festival circuit in Europe having done a mini tour of South America this spring. Now her daughter with husband/manager Marcello Cabuli (Naomi -age 10) is back at school. Parenting comes 1st!

As a Singer, I guarantee she is trained. I can here she has over 3 Octaves. Professionally trained singer for certain, you have to open up, correctly or your going to ruin the voice & eventually develop nodes if not careful. 🥰🔥🔥🔥
Always enjoy your appreciation of music, thanks for this! As I understand it, when Tuomas was first putting together Nightwish, the idea was to perform as a Contemporary (modern) Folk band. But the only singer they knew was Tarja, who was Classically trained, and after hearing how BIG her voice was, he knew that their sound had to be much bigger! Thus was born the Celtic/Folk/Power/Symphonic Metal band that we now know and love as Nightwish! Cheers!
Tarja was never trained in opera. She's a classically-trained soprano.

Tarja started out singing classical music. She had to get additional training to be able to sing classical to a metal band when she was approached to help start Nightwish.

Marko Tapani "Marco" Hietala (born 14 January 1966) is a Finnish heavy metal vocalist, bassist and songwriter. Internationally, he is best known as the former bassist, male vocalist and secondary composer to Tuomas Holopainen, of the symphonic metal band Nightwish. He was also the vocalist and bassist as well as composer and lyricist for the heavy metal band Tarot.
He is also a member of the supergroup Northern Kings, and portrayed one of the main characters in Ayreon's 2013 album The Theory of Everything.

I love Marco's performance. I love Tarja too but Marco is just amazing in this. He brings what other singers I've heard doing that song don't : He's scary, sinister, almost creepy. To me, that's how the Phantom should be. 'cause we're not talkig about an angel, we're talking about a phantom, a ghost, a spirit, he has to be a little scary, a little sinister. As a character he is supposed to be both charming and sinister

Floor also sang the Phantom of the Opera with Henk Poort in a Dutch program called “De beste zangers”. Unfortunately she never sang it with Nightwish and Marko. But this version with Tarja is also awesome.
I have wondered if Phantom was "retired" from the setlist permanently to say 'This is Tarja's song.' I would have loved to see and hear the duet with Marko and Floor.

Tarja was the first Nightwish singer, since Tuomas and her had gone to the same school and even performed in school music productions. They knew each other. TARJA TURUNEN was the first NightWish singer and the best one to my taste ! She's the voice that made NightWish known all around the world ! Effectively in FINLAND she studied with an opera - classical teacher ! That was the best period of NightWish until they decided to fire her (not a good move on their part) ! She have a successful solo career !

Tarja has her own solo career and although the other singers who took her place are good, Tarja is my favorite and yes she was a classically trained opera singer before she became a Rocker.

Actually Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the Phantom Of The Opera as a rock musical with classical put in it listen to the Michael Crawford and Sarah Brighton version you will hear the distorted electric guitars and keyboards along with the regular orchestra except they do it more of the classical rock style music than metal like Nightwish with Tarja and Marko

This is the best version of Nightwish for me. When Tarja was dismissed in 2005, I lost interest. I have heard other albums after this which are fine, but not for me.
