Remember, Tuomas wanted to make it a simple folk rock band. But Tarja's new progression as a singer made that impossible.
Marco is the best Phantom, no question in my mind at all. The pain, anguish and menace he manages to evoke with the rasp and metal vocal style goes way beyond anything any classically trained vocalist could ever evoke (yes Henk, looking at you!!!).
I don't understand how anyone can give credibility to Mr Poort now. I'm not talking about his history, which is exemplary. I'm talking about now and the whole Beste Zangers thing, the hanging on the shirt tales of contemporary performers. I've seen it happen many times in the business. David Byrne was notorious for it, even Bowie. Sad to see it happening with Nightwish.
Marco cutting in with his metal riff voice on top of Tarja's powerful operatic voice never gets old
I love the little detail of Tarja's vibrato during the last part matching the drumming perfectly. Her talent!!
Tarja and Marco were always so good together ❣🌷As you said, their frequencies and techniques are different enough to create such contrast yet they compliment each other perfectly because of it! Tarja's voice has such a rich and dark colour that's just very beautiful and special :)
Has anyone noticed the perfectly placed harmonic squeals from Emuu's guitar on top of Tarja's high notes towards the end?
@@coy0te9 yeah no ever mentions it but those accented squeals elevate what the vocalists are doing. Fandoms get fixated on who the vocalist is and miss the details that contribute to the overall musical accomplishment. Tarja (being sick) isn't at her best here, but the overall band performance transcends the limitations in the moment. It's like the music spins in a higher dimension.
No matter how many times I listen to this, I always get goosebumps at the end. The male singer is Marko Hietala, who, unfortunately, left the band a couple of years ago. He is very much missed. He is sometimes known as "The Father of Metal in Finland" and, as Finland has the highest number of metal bands per capita in the world, that's not an empty accolade. His versatility is amazing and he does sing lead in a number of Nightwish songs including "The Islander", "High Hopes, and "Kiss While yYour Lips aAre Still Red". If I am remembering correctly, the high note he sings at the end of this song is a G5.
Don't forget his accidental finale with Nightwish, Endlessness, which I suppose will never be heard live. One of Holopainen's best recent works.

This was Marko and Tarja, the original Nightwish female lead, known for her operatic approach.
Marko is versatile as vocalist.
Nightwish - "High Hop"es (Pink Floyd cover from this same End of an Era concert) traditional rock vocals
Nightwish - "The Islander" Tampere 2015, a sea shanty, Marko's own composition
Nightwish - "While Your Lips Are Still Red", Wembley Arena 2015, a soft ballad.
Marko sounds great, blends well, when singing duet with a female vocalists, whether it's a harmony or unison. Sometimes it is difficult even for vocal coaches to separate their voices, when they sing the exact same thing. As you just heard Marko can reach high notes to match the female vocals. As an example:
Nightwish - "Song of Myself" Wacken 2013, Floor And Marko on vocals. Perfect fit! And Floor starts the song with pretty low notes!

Great job Liza! Tarja is obviously has an amazing operatic vocal style. Marko will also surprise you with his variety of vocal textures. He does sing lead on a few songs and has many solo parts in several songs. He is usually the aggressive male character role in many of the Nightwish songs. They do have several songs which are almost musical theater in nature using vocal character based duets.

Great reaction and analysis ! What I love about this song is how Marko totally steals the show as the grittiest Phantom ever. Tarja is quite good but I think there are lots of other Nightwish songs where her dark operatic voice is better showcased. Songs like The Siren, Forever Yours, Planet Hell, Bless the Child, Nemo, or Sleeping Sun. My favorite Phantom of the Opera is with Floor and Henk Poort from the Dutch singing show Beste Zangers. They use the Nightwish arrangement but not as metal. Floor is going for more of a musical theater tone in her vowels and pacing and she is much more playful in her vocal choices, especially in her runs during the final section. Definitely worth a listen as well.

Marko Hietala (pron: HEE-ah-Tallah) is a classically trained guitarist, bassist, songwriter and incredible vocalist both solo and in harmony. Marko was with the band thru all 3 female leads, making great music with each one. He began in the 80s w the band Tarot (thru to current day) ft his older brother Saku on guitar. And he is currently touring his latest solo project, Pyre of the Black Heart.
If you were running your audio output thru those headphones, I would return them, bc they were pretty basic.

Never heard of these and I'm an audiophile head. IEMs in the budget range that are good are usually brands like Moondrop, CCA, and Linsoul. But I listen to my Nightwish reactions only on Sennheiser HD800 or Hifiman HE500 damnit

Suggesting another band for you which seems to have a fair cross over with this fanbase. The Warning, three sisters, power rock trio from Mexico. They became noticed when a cover of enter Sandman they recorded in 2014 for their family went viral - at ages 14, 12 and 9. They have been playing together and writing their own music for 10 years now, releasing their 3rd album last year. Many people consider them to be the best rock band playing right now.

Marko Hietala is a truly beast in his own right. Really, he was already a veteran in metal scene when he joined Nightwish in 2001. He's had his own band Tarot along with his brother since 1985, in which they play[ed] traditional heavy metal. Marco played pivotal role in Nightwish over the 20 years he was in the band, both in songwriting and male vocals duties. Sadly he left Nightwish (and the spotlight life) due to personal reasons in 2021. In my personal opinion, Nightwish should have disbanded when he left, as like I said, he was an essential and irreplacable part of Nightwish's identity, both musically and perfomance-wise. But the band is too big and a business brand now, so naturally they opted to carry on without him, which i seriously doubt will lead anywhere, as far as making new music and recapturing their live perfomance magic go.

Nightwish made a new version of this song in November 2022 - Floor and Henk Port kept their promise to do this duet live on the Ziggy Dome Arena - twice!! Probably the best version ever. Henk Port is the European Phantom and Andrew Lloyd Webber's favorite - and Floor is Floor - nobody comes even close to her.
