How to Paint Fabric Chairs with Annie Sloan paint. My first attempt.

  • Note: I totally changed my mind about the colour after the first coat.
    The total cost including the second hand chairs was about £100.00... MUCH cheaper than buying brand new chairs.
    No cracking or colour transfer even after six months of every day use. Comfortable to sit on, although you may like to use a small sheep-skin rug for extra warmth on the seat.
    The challenge I had with these two chairs was that they had a raised pile. I think in future I will only paint velvet or velveteen... or anything with a very smooth surface. ... but you can decide for yourself if you feel you would like to take on the challenge...

      They look good to me....I'm thinking about painting my furniture.
      I painted my cabinets last summer with chalk paint and they came out fantastic.
      So easy...I just wiped them down really good and painted. No sanding or anything. I didn't even take the doors off. Easy breezy. Chalk paint is the bomb 💣💣 or yeah and I paint my walls. They were hideous had the old out dated wallpaper(at least 30 yrs okd) painted right over it. No priming or anything. Painted it cabinets and walls white. Looks so fresh and clean.
      Definitely gonna try it on my furniture...in a hidden place first no doubt💞💞🙏

    I did this with an old Queen Anne chair and the results are awesome - if the fabric looks like it's cracking spray it with WD40 and it gave it a terrific finish - I put this on after waxing with white wax and I'm so glad I went with it - never lose faith.

      Next time use a spray bottle to dampen (not soak) the chair first,then the chalk paint,this will eliminate the need to do 3-4 coats,thus fabric does not become stiff. Last step don’t forget the last step the wax,this prevents it from transferring onto your guests butts!

    And honestly, scared for me, too. I've decided to tackle painting the 1990's sofa sleeper my husband dragged home a few years ago while he's away for work. I cannot stand it, but he won't let me ditch it. ("It only cost twenty bucks! It's a sofa. You can sit on it. It's fine.") I know this is going to be a massive project and the cost of the supplies is making me a bit queasy. If I mess this up, I'm out so much.
    And my husband will be crushed that I destroyed his sofa.

    I'm inspired to try this on an ugly 20 year old chair from a model home with a hideous navy floral pattern, but beautifully shaped, wood Queen Anne legs and arms that are stained a pukey weathered gold. It was never used, so it's in perfect condition, but it's soooo ugly. It would look gorgeous in cream or white, but because it's dark fabric, I'm afraid I'll have to do several layers and it will be too stiff and uncomfortable to actually be functional. Your chair looks amazing, so I'm gonna give it a try. If it's a fail, I'll look for a video to learn upholstering, haha. I love to learn new things and sometimes great things come when you just go for it! 😁 God Bless ❤

    Oh please don’t worry . The chairs look great very unusual and elegant . These chairs were a good buy ... they look strong with a good shape and when you get tired of the colour you can make loose covers or swathe them in a wonderful print . Good luck .

    Well done! Really like the light colored accessory choice. I am about to paint a channel back chair and was wondering does the fabric still feel comfy after the process or is it like sitting on burlap?

    Finally, a UK video. Very nice, but u should dampen furniture fabric. Absorbs paint. Great work!

    there is a channel called Debi's Design diaries. her couch looks like velvet and when she rubs it the fabric is soft. she spritzed the fabric first and used watered down diy and let dry completely. I recommend you watch her video...how to paint upholstery keep it soft, no cracking. that's the name of the video. she says when you moisten the fabric first and then apply the paint it dyes the fabric instead of sitting on it.

      Thanks for your comment but actually I have mentioned in so many replies to other comments that I did Wet the fabric first every single time I just didn't manage to show it in the video. The difference between her sofa and mine is that she started off with a very flat very short pile... my chairs however had a very thick pile and it was a totally different kettle of fish.

    In the end they look great. I understand your frustration, when all the work seemed to be going wrong . I am curious to find out how the wax worked out after a month. Did anyone sit on them before the wax settled in?

    • @kindofrandom834
      @kindofrandom834  Před 5 lety +3

      Hi yes I have to admit I was using them pretty much the next morning. They have now been in good used for over 6 months and absolutely as wonderful today as they were when first done. We use a couple of small sheepskins however on the actual seat just because it feels more comfortable to sit on. I really would love you to subscribe it will help my channel to grow thank you

    Hi, do you need to wax every few months? same as for furniture painted with chalk paint

    • @kindofrandom834
      @kindofrandom834  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi no you only have to wax it once and I think it will last pretty much a few years... Might be nice to give it one more coat of Wax and shine maybe 3 years later? X

    It is a very difficult process and I can relate to all your problems, but I think you chairs look fabulous. I have a nursing chair I don’t like the colour of it but I think I will leave it as it is after just finishing a chair that was all black I found it hard to do but it sure looks better than it did ❤️
