How to Paint Fabric Chairs with Annie Sloan paint. My first attempt.

- Note: I totally changed my mind about the colour after the first coat.
The total cost including the second hand chairs was about £100.00... MUCH cheaper than buying brand new chairs.
No cracking or colour transfer even after six months of every day use. Comfortable to sit on, although you may like to use a small sheep-skin rug for extra warmth on the seat.
The challenge I had with these two chairs was that they had a raised pile. I think in future I will only paint velvet or velveteen... or anything with a very smooth surface. ... but you can decide for yourself if you feel you would like to take on the challenge...

pro tip : watch series at flixzone. I've been using it for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Ares Vincent yup, I have been watching on Flixzone for years myself =)
@@aresvincent2773 hi there I'm just a bit confused what is fixed zone and what do you recommend that I watch on it? Thank you so much for your time
Good for you for continuing the process even when you were disappointed! I think your chairs look great!
They look good to me....I'm thinking about painting my furniture.
I painted my cabinets last summer with chalk paint and they came out fantastic.
So easy...I just wiped them down really good and painted. No sanding or anything. I didn't even take the doors off. Easy breezy. Chalk paint is the bomb 💣💣 or yeah and I paint my walls. They were hideous had the old out dated wallpaper(at least 30 yrs okd) painted right over it. No priming or anything. Painted it cabinets and walls white. Looks so fresh and clean.
Definitely gonna try it on my furniture...in a hidden place first no doubt💞💞🙏
They looked great, convinced me to try. Now I am losing my nerve
@@deborahfoster1960 On the wallpaper. wow, I once made banners of my sketches at Kinkos for wallpaper in a small space, Maybe I should send a note to the present tenant, "You can chalk over the fresh paint art work reproduced Kinko's, ask Jim if his sister still has hers in the kitchen.
I did this with an old Queen Anne chair and the results are awesome - if the fabric looks like it's cracking spray it with WD40 and it gave it a terrific finish - I put this on after waxing with white wax and I'm so glad I went with it - never lose faith.
Beautiful! I think the chairs have character; like something you’d see in Anthropologie with the right styling.
They turned out wonderful. Nice job and thanks for sharing the imperfection.
I love that you can see the texture. They are gorgeous!♥️
Let us know how it wears.
They are wearing so well..... six months in and i think they'll still be good in a few years from now! xxx
Thank you so very much for this video! This was very informative! It’s wonderful to see it turn out well!
Bless your heart! Sticking with the project, and showing us how cool it is! Kathy
Thank you so much Kathy! :) I hope you subscribe as soon I will be making lots of videos . xxxxxx
Wow! That came out great! I was panicking right along with you, but you pulled it off! Brilliant!
What a lovely comment!
Thank you for showing the things you went through with painting your chairs. Most people wouldn't have shared that. You inspire many of us. Things go wrong but your bravery inspires us to try and not be afraid or shocked if it doesn't go right. Your chairs a beautiful and so are you. Thank you so much. A new fan🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
You have a very generous and kind heart!!! :) xx
Thank you so much for sharing the whole project! Great learning experience
They look so nice. And those striped pillows are perfect. Well done!
I think it looks great sitting there. I may have to try this technique. Thanks for sharing.
I love the way the chairs look. I want to try something like this.
Wow!!! Beautiful, Fantastic, Fabulous..great job..
Wet the fabric first, then water paint down, should only need two coats!
Two coats wasn't enough to cover the old-fashioned floral pattern and the raised pile unfortunately. :(
Moisture moisture moisture lots of water fabric softener
Red W. Hi, I’ve had the problem after my third coat of chalk paint, my chair has now gone all crunchy and scratchy even after sanding. If I rub the fabric with a damp cloth I can get the softness back but it takes all the paint off. Any tips on how I can salvage all my hard the work. The new chair colour is stunning but I won’t be able to use it 😭 it’s also taken 2 and half litres of paint 🙈
I am sort of a chicken, it a chair worth $800.00 ugly, and I have all of the supplies to make it celery. I need to experiment, and yes I will wet it, I just need some sandpaper. I have to embolden myself to approach this project, a carob malt and centrium vitamens. What to do ?
@@kindofrandom834 Oh Gee, I might need more celery, or do a base coat with white first, Oh what am getting into? Lots of water, ok,
It just proves that persistence and asking for advice can not only point you in the right direction..... can create a pro. I am preparing for my first project. I take inspiration from your wonderful black chairs and your methods!
What a lovely comment. Please post a link as I'd love to see it xx
@@kindofrandom834 Thanks for the advice but I am chickening out, I bought all the supplies, it's just this chair cost about $800.00 worth of ugly fabric, I have light green pastel called celery chalk, the fabric weave is loose, I am wondering if this might be something terrible, I will experiement first. I am encouraged.
@@kathrynstewart-mcdonald yes I bought my chairs from the charity shop very very cheaply so probably if your chairs are very expensive you might want to opt for fabric covers handmade for you., or you could do a patch test under the chair x
Wow.. incredible! Good for you!! Must try..
I think it looks fabulous with your mantle...very designeresque!
I like the way they turned out. It was a lot of work and products but worth it. Good job.
I had never heard of this process until today. Looks interesting.
I am so happy I watched your video! I am in the middle of painting a large ottoman and am have the same issue! Very porous material and the original color is orange. Seeing the wax work it’s miracles gives me hope!
Thank you xxx please link your finished result into the comments xxx
Thank you for the info and the chuckles. I think I’ll leave my tapestry chairs alone. Your third coat scared me. But your end result is beautiful. Well done!!
I think they turned out marvelous considering the problems you faced along the way. Great job!
They look awesome! Great job 👍
From the picture it looks like you have a great new chair. I love the look.
It looks beautiful! Wow!
Wow! So happy you went forward! I would have given up & kicked to the curb. I think the contrast pillow & throw looks great by fire place. 👌🏽
You have patience and determination. I would have given up since the first coat and reupholstered it or put them on the curb for someone with more patience.
I think you did a lovely job! I’m so glad I watched this. I learned a lot by watching your process and perseverance. Looks great.
Great job! I was feeling your anxiety right along with you. So glad it worked out for you, enjoy!!
Thank you xxx
Fab! Well done, and now you know what works for next time x
Looks like you've mastered the technique - well done!
Thank you! :) xxx
Very good. You sorted it out and it's beautiful. Be proud.
The chair looks wonderful with your decor. Thank you for sharing. Just received some antique dressers, and I've been binge-watching tutorials about chalk paint. Have learned a great deal today, and am excited to do many projects with fabric in the future---AFTER I finish the furniture projects. :)
Bless you sweet lady... please post your results on this thread and please subscribe xxx
Hi .... I have just uploaded a follow-up video so you can see how the chairs lasted.... it's called: ''Painted Fabric Wing-back Chairs - Annie Sloan first attempt - ONE YEAR LATER''
The chairs look great.......I just completed my headboard.....and was disappointed that it felt like vinyl.....so now I feel better...as it sounds like it could soften in about a month...it was a rose shade & now it’s a soft cream, using Annie’s Original white....we are very pleased with the color. You do a great job in explaining your painting. Thanks
Thank you really that's lovely compliment. Have you tried distressing your headboard and then waxing over it and doing a bit more distressing?
Looks awesome...love the results
I actually have very similar chairs with a floral print and was considering doing the exact grey paint color, so glad I found your video!!!
Thank you for the lovely compliment 💖 just remember that with a thick pile it needs a lot more work than a velvety smooth pile. But it really is worth it and I would love to see your results xxx
Wow. How Georgeous. Thank you. Well done. LOVE it
Next time use a spray bottle to dampen (not soak) the chair first, then the chalk paint, this will eliminate the need to do 3-4 coats, thus fabric does not become stiff. Last step don’t forget the last step the wax, this prevents it from transferring onto your guests butts!
Hi, I’m Linda, I use my husband’s site. I LOVE the chair. It has texture and the colour is fabulous. Lots of work, but it turned out great. Just thought. I’d give you my opinion. 😊
I LOVE YOUR OPINION!! Please subscribe and I will make more videos that you can share your opinion on!! :) xxx
Hi, your comments about your chairs made me laugh 😆 skin of elephants and pulled out of a house fire, were the best.
👏👏👏
Well, I know it was a challenge for you, but they actually turned out very nice!
They look great. I've 3 mismatched wing-backs that I've wanted to paint and now I've seen yours I'm actually going to give it a go. Thanks for sharing your experience x
looks great x you made it look unique and very expensive i love it x
Love them! So unique.
Beautiful result! I was getting scared for you for a minute there! lol!
And honestly, scared for me, too. I've decided to tackle painting the 1990's sofa sleeper my husband dragged home a few years ago while he's away for work. I cannot stand it, but he won't let me ditch it. ("It only cost twenty bucks! It's a sofa. You can sit on it. It's fine.") I know this is going to be a massive project and the cost of the supplies is making me a bit queasy. If I mess this up, I'm out so much.
And my husband will be crushed that I destroyed his sofa.
Please post results!! :)
You did a fantastic job. They turned out beautifully and no longer granny chairs. They are sleek and sophisticated.
That's a huge compliment.. Thank you 😊
Simply Beautiful.
Looks like an old leather chair. Pretty.
I'm inspired to try this on an ugly 20 year old chair from a model home with a hideous navy floral pattern, but beautifully shaped, wood Queen Anne legs and arms that are stained a pukey weathered gold. It was never used, so it's in perfect condition, but it's soooo ugly. It would look gorgeous in cream or white, but because it's dark fabric, I'm afraid I'll have to do several layers and it will be too stiff and uncomfortable to actually be functional. Your chair looks amazing, so I'm gonna give it a try. If it's a fail, I'll look for a video to learn upholstering, haha. I love to learn new things and sometimes great things come when you just go for it! 😁 God Bless ❤
Could you possibly find a way of sending me a photo of it? Does it have a pile or is it smooth velvet? Might be better to paint in a darker colour? xx
PS. I have a couple of small sheep skins on the seats of my chairs, which makes them feel cosy and soft to sit on.
It came out really cool looking 👍 definitely looks like real leather!
Wow I love it keep the good work 🎉🙏🎉🙏
Wow. I never knew this was possible. Thank you for the video!!
Very classy looking!
WOW they look so nice very trendy!
They turned out quite good. Well done!
Absolutely amazing. Thank you ❤️😇❤️💕💕
Great job! Thanks for sharing!
You can find velvet or leather slipcovers for a wingback. And use 1 inch tacks to hold in place.
OMG looks AMAZING !!
This was a really good attempt. I love how it turned out. although the emperor red was gorgeous too. good on you for trying. I might try this too I think.
Well they look great but does the fabric feel rough and scratchy now, or has it softened? I would be concerned that would happen to me ❤
Great job!
wow that is amazing what you showed to me.......i was facing same and i know what exactly what to do.....Thank you sooooooo much for the video.....
You are so welcome!! haha :) I really like your channel name!!!
You did a great job! Preservance at its best! 💞
I love that you are soo honest
Nice chair shape!!
Wow, they look great. I probably would panic as well. I think I'm going to try on a pillow before I attempt the foot stool and chairs. Thanks for a real honest video.
Please sub xx
ME TOO! I'm going to do the bottom side of the cushion!
Hi .... I have just uploaded a follow-up video so you can see how the chairs lasted.... it's called: ''Painted Fabric Wing-back Chairs - Annie Sloan first attempt - ONE YEAR LATER''
I think it looks very nice! You did great!
Love them!! I decided to do my wing backs, they turned out great!!
Can you post your link here? x
They turned out great. Glad you stuck with it. I have heard to spray your fabric with water as you paint each section. This is supposed to let the chalk paint soak in better and not sit on top so much. I am anxiously awaiting my calcium carbonate to arrive to I can paint my love seat and recliner. Fabric on both is very smooth. Almost already looks like leather but they are dark brown and I do not do brown anything. And just want to add you are Gorgeous!!!
Send me a link if you take any pics!! :)
Picture is a bit dark because my room is really bright inside. www.flickr.com/photos/50185661@N03/44418017734/in/dateposted/
A better one of just the recliner done . www.flickr.com/photos/50185661@N03/43325639950/in/dateposted/
I also went onto paint my old beat up secretary.

And if I can get to it today I hope to paint a great big ottoman also in the same room Paints are all still sitting on the kitchen counter. I just had three kittens spayed/neutered so I might be too busy watching over them. LOL
Your work is really, really good!!!I hope you decide to make a couple of videos!! :)
Aw Thanks No videos for me I do not have a camera to do so nor do I like to be on camera. It was fun and as soon as I get done sewing what I hope to be the final layer of curtains for my windows for winter I want to paint some more wood furniture. The love seat and chair are a little stiff but with all my animals it is fine Easy to wipe off. I think as I use then they are softening up some more.
Working on sewing last layer of curtains in heavy canvas painters drop cloths from Harbor Freight. I have four windows done in the living room. On to the dining room and kitchen window today. I hope to get all windows and doors in the house covered.
@@shadesofidaho....FYI:
You can also paint fabric with acrylic spray paint.
Fabric paint works best but u can use acrylic.
I did my patio furniture and it turned out great!
Spray paint is your friend when it comes to making changes💞 👍
A channel called Astrid’s place Annie Sloan showed how to paint chairs and she said never paint more than two coats, sand only lightly if at all and could wax or not. Go watch her channel, because she tells all.
Sadly that doesn't apply to chairs that have thick pile. xx
Hi .... I have just uploaded a follow-up video so you can see how the chairs lasted.... it's called: ''Painted Fabric Wing-back Chairs - Annie Sloan first attempt - ONE YEAR LATER''
Cracked up @ chairs covered in house fire soot. Hilarious. Great, informative video.
Lol that part and elephant skin bit in the posh British accent made it class lol
They came out nice!
Love, love love it!!
Oh please don’t worry . The chairs look great very unusual and elegant . These chairs were a good buy ... they look strong with a good shape and when you get tired of the colour you can make loose covers or swathe them in a wonderful print . Good luck .
What a lovely comment!! Thank you ... please subscribe :)
Well done! Really like the light colored accessory choice. I am about to paint a channel back chair and was wondering does the fabric still feel comfy after the process or is it like sitting on burlap?
Hi :) they have been in use for three months now and they are amazing!!! On the actual seat pad I have put a small sheepskin rug ... it's perfect!!!
I like the leathery look on the chair. God job
You have a lot more patience than I do, for sure
Thank you so much. BEAUTIFUL...looks like leather.
Looks great
Finally, a UK video. Very nice, but u should dampen furniture fabric. Absorbs paint. Great work!
there is a channel called Debi's Design diaries. her couch looks like velvet and when she rubs it the fabric is soft. she spritzed the fabric first and used watered down diy and let dry completely. I recommend you watch her video...how to paint upholstery keep it soft, no cracking. that's the name of the video. she says when you moisten the fabric first and then apply the paint it dyes the fabric instead of sitting on it.
Thanks for your comment but actually I have mentioned in so many replies to other comments that I did Wet the fabric first every single time I just didn't manage to show it in the video. The difference between her sofa and mine is that she started off with a very flat very short pile... my chairs however had a very thick pile and it was a totally different kettle of fish.
I think they look great!
i think it looks very nice. what do they look like one year later?
Maybe there was a coat of scotchguard. They look great to me. Kudos.
Great Job!
Sort of looks ok “ it’s BEAUTIFUL!!!
I think they look great!!! It gives it a leather look.
Fantastic!
The crazy thing is is I have the same exact wing chairs that I am looking at tutorials to see if I wanna do a makeover I’m very convinced that this should work for me
Thank you sooo much. I work with miniatures. I have a couch and love seat I want to do this to
Hi .... I have just uploaded a follow-up video so you can see how the chairs lasted.... it's called: ''Painted Fabric Wing-back Chairs - Annie Sloan first attempt - ONE YEAR LATER''
Whew! Thought you had an expensive failed experiment on your hands but the final finish looks very nice on your chairs! Like a textured leather. Thank you!👏
I love it!
In the end they look great. I understand your frustration, when all the work seemed to be going wrong . I am curious to find out how the wax worked out after a month. Did anyone sit on them before the wax settled in?
Hi yes I have to admit I was using them pretty much the next morning. They have now been in good used for over 6 months and absolutely as wonderful today as they were when first done. We use a couple of small sheepskins however on the actual seat just because it feels more comfortable to sit on. I really would love you to subscribe it will help my channel to grow thank you
Hi, do you need to wax every few months? same as for furniture painted with chalk paint
Hi no you only have to wax it once and I think it will last pretty much a few years... Might be nice to give it one more coat of Wax and shine maybe 3 years later? X
I think they look awesome
Have I tried Cari Cucksey’s repurpose paint. No prep or sanding needed
How do they hold up after being sat on? Does the paint crackle at all from the pressure?
Hi :) they have been in use for three months now and they are amazing!!! On the actual seat pad I have put a small sheepskin rug ... it's perfect!!!
@@kindofrandom834 Cool! Thank you! :) Sounds cute, love sheepskins.
It is a very difficult process and I can relate to all your problems, but I think you chairs look fabulous. I have a nursing chair I don’t like the colour of it but I think I will leave it as it is after just finishing a chair that was all black I found it hard to do but it sure looks better than it did ❤️
