    This chalk paint DIY was a challenge. But I take you through some steps on how I try to fix a huge mistake after painting upholstery with Annie Sloan chalk paint.
    By applying three coats of paint, it began to crack. Maybe it was the fabric, but this is not a normal outcome. Using 2 coats of paint has created the most amazing makeovers to some incredible upholstered furniture I have in my home. At the end of the video, I show you these incredible pieces of furniture I chalk-painted and give you an up-close view of the fabric. Cracked fabric is not normal at all. So, this was why I was stumped.
    But through this, I learned three things from this experience. One is to pick the right fabric. Two is to only paint with 2 coats, and three is to pick fabric without orange so it won't bleed through.
    I hope by sharing this debacle it helps you know what not to do when painting fabric. I love how it turned out in the end. I love chippy, rustic, and worn things, so this chair and ottoman fits right in. Not what I was expecting, but seeing its beauty after trying to fix it made it a beautiful and unique piece in my Victorian Farmhouse-styled home. I love how it turned out; it is so soft and cozy now.
    I have another chalk paint DIY in the works, so come back to see another amazing transformation.

    I'm so excited because I'm working on another chalk paint DIY. What I love is taking furniture that resembles expensive pieces, and with a bit of paint, I can give it a similar look for cheap. So come on back to see a new piece I'm transforming. My goal is to give our city home a Victorian Farmhouse look, all on a budget. To see what I've done so far, go to victorianlanefarms.com.

    First of all you have a lovely, comfortable home. I definitely love your taste in furniture. It’s so nice to see the younger generation appreciating furniture n items from the past.
    I was amazed to see the furniture that you had painted in the past. They turned out awesome. Unfortunately your last piece didn’t turn out as well. I have to agree with the type of material the chair n ottoman are made of makes a difference on using the Annie Sloan chalk paint. The chair is a pretty color. From the video it looks gray n I really like a gray. I think waxing it again will keep it from cracking anymore.
    Want to thank you for your honesty. It definitely helps others when it comes to wanting to do the same thing.

      Thank you! I will be more cautious on what fabric I choose next time. Thanks for your kind words.

    Hi! I actually love the chair more now. The vintage and distressed look is amazing. I have not painted fabric yet, I’m a little afraid of ruining my furniture but your looks so pretty. Thank you for sharing this with us. 😊

    I love your honest video - makes me less nervous about my project. Painted a fat, thick, durable outdoor canvas cushion with an HD sample color-matched to nearby cushions. No Annie Sloan store here or any store that has someone familiar with painting fabric. So, mixed sample with water, calcium carbonate and plaster of Paris (1 TBS each ). (Looked everywhere online for a formula) Painted cushion with water and came back with diluted "chalk paint." Waited overnight and applied a second coat.Design comes through, sanding just lightened the paint and design came back. Applied a third coat of thin paint and is now crunchy. Will waxing soften fabric? What kind of wax would be best - so many to choose from online. I don't think there is enough paint to crack but would like cushion to be softer. Any ideas? And which wax to use if you think wax will work.
    Thank you

      Thank you! DIYS definitely can have thier challenges. I'd recommend Jolie clear finishing wax topcoat. I've used it before. I'm honestly a Annie Sloan fan but this one (Jolie finishing wax) is easy to find on Amazon. And it just may do the trick. Adding wax does make the fabric feel softer. Make sure to give the wax 3 days to dry before sitting on cushions. Sounds like you did great, though. I'd give it a try and would love to hear how it goes.

    Did you paint the fabric with water first?

    • @victorianlanefarms
      @victorianlanefarms  Před měsícem

      Yes. I sprayed the fabric with water first which helps the chalk paint absorb into fabric. I learned through this project that fabric matters. Thanks for watching!
