It was 1974, got a chance to see one of my all time faves. I was kinda expecting Something/Anything, maybe some Nazz. But they came out and launched into the whole Utopia album. My jaw hit the floor, and it’s been there since. Todd!!

That was f'in incredible. I remember seeing it on tv back then. I got to see them play this live at Pine Knob back in the day. Todd's music is phenomenal! A genius, like Mozart and all the greats! I'm so happy there is this rare vintage live Todd on here!

@@nicholasguinan6452 Hi Nicholas, thanks for the response. I feel sad for you not being in an area to see great live music. I've been thru Texas twice. I guess if your not near a city it is pretty small town desolate for sure at least my drives thru there told me that. I haven't been to Pine Knob for years now so not sure if it's still the same. I live back in Cali now and I think the venues are even better, like The Hollywood Bowl! Stay well!

I have been a fan of Todd since the 70's. I painted Utopia on my school satchel when I was about 14. I have been fortunate to meet Todd a few times and the last time, there I was in My 50's having My picture taken with My hero in a bar in Amsterdam with Todd's arm around My shoulder thinking back to the 70's and how surreal an experience. Thank you for the music Todd :-)

Very much the same story as many fans here. Fan since 70’s, not able to see footage until much later, playing the records pretty much from the moment I got home from school until I went to bed, copied the Utopia logo on my satchel, drew Todd, met him a few times and had dinner with him and Michele. His music has always been an adventure. In concert and throughout time. Blink twice and you go like ‘B-b-b-but I liked what you did the last time. What are you doing now?!’ Until you start to appreciate and love it. Then the reinvention starts all over again. The ultimate inspiration to keep it fresh and alive in your own life and/or career ❤

@ - I find record of a broadcast of Todd and Utopia at the Aquarius Theatre in Los Angeles on Feb. 1 1974 on Dick Clark's "ABC in Concert". Then they played on March 3 at the Santa Monica Civic (which is right next to L.A.). This is the show I saw, with Todd solo with the tape recorders and stuff in the first act, then the whole band in the second act. However, I don't remember any cameras, and there seem to be lots of them roving around in this video. I would think I would have noticed them if they had been there. There's a big banner over the stage that says "Don Kirshner's In Concert", and I don't remember that, either. I wonder if maybe they did an earlier show that day just for the TV shoot, and then another regular show that night?

@ As for the dates, this is from the TR Connection.... 1974-03-10 Todd Rundgren's Utopia Don Kirshner's Rock Concert HI QUALITY
This is a real treat. One of our Holy Grails. As you all know, surfaced on CZcams last week by Jos lui-mme was a Hi QUALITY version of the 1974-03-10 (Date when it aired) Don Kirshners Rock Concert. Intl_Feel has posted the 'heads up' in the Video Forum. However he enters it as a 1973 performance. Which is probably correct, and aired in March of 1974. (forum.trconnection.com/viewthread.php?tid=10539).
Anyway, We have taken the video a step further here by offering to you in HI DEF NTSC DVD Mpeg (720 X 480 29/frames per sec) and we added the ever faithful Joe Franks (Fartherobliv) audio mix to it. The intro portion with Philippe Mandeuvre has been ommitted. This is as good as it gets folks! THIS IS ESSENTIAL. Enjoy ~ Warren

Why do artists when they perform live sometimes sing the lyrics in advance of the beat. are they trying to change the contour of the music I don’t understand it. is it an audio thing? I know that fans really don’t like it even though we love the artists Todd is doing it here ian Anderson and Jethro Tull really started doing it. as two of my favorites I just would like to know

    •  Před 5 lety +2

It can be a monitor thing or the band is to slow ;-)

Todd does this more than ever now; he's trying to keep it interesting after singing Hello it's Me for the 1000th time. I just saw him last month and pointed out how hard it was for the fans to sing along cause he sings it almost unrecognizably.

the best answer to this question is that some lines are difficult to sing in sync or on beat with the guitar/piano part that they have to play simultaneously. During recording, vocals are overdubbed last after laying all other instrument parts down, so they can sing the line exactly the way it should be. Sometimes a song is never actually performed with a full band until long after the recording is completed, especially with people like Todd who write and record a lot of their material by themselves. Sometimes they just never bothered to learn to sing and play the harder passages at the same time so you get the vocal irregularities you’re talking about

Todd was like--or I'll say Prince was like Todd...top-shelf songwriting and instrumental creativity. They cldn't pigeonhole themselves; they were unpredictable, which some ppl don't like.
