Ghost of Tsushima - What Happens In The End If You Complete The Game As An Honorable Samurai!?

  • In today's Ghost of Tsushima, I see what happens in the end if you complete the game as an honorable samurai. So I have played through Ghost of Tsushima once again to see if there is any difference or change in the ending of the game, if you play through the entire story as a samurai. I wanted to see if there was any change in dialogue, cutscenes the end game world, or anything else. The samurai playthrough required me to not use any Ghost tactics and to not enter Ghost Stance, other than when you have to for the Yarikawa Stronghold Mission. It was difficult playing as the honorable samurai, but it was worth it for the purpose to answer the many questions.

I’m actually glad they went in this direction. I love the Infamous games but I honestly felt like there was no real incentive to play evil other than trophies. Never felt like it fit Cole or Delsin and the evil storylines just made you feel like s**t. Not only that but your skill branch depended on how you played. Play a certain way(I feel most played the hero path) and all those other powers would get locked off. GoT doesn’t “punish” you for playing one way or the other so you can take advantage of all the skills the game has to offer, rather than being forced to play one way to meet an arbitrary honor system.

Imagine if there was a Honorable Samurai ending, it would mean that Jin Sakai, despite the overwhelming disadvantage of the Mongols actually knowing his strategy and the difference in numbers, he practically soloed the entire Mongol army without fighting underhandedly(admittedly with help from the allies he recruits, without them he could only get so far). The secret to the story is that, although Lord Shimura doesn't agree with Jin's methods, especially the use of poison, he is only forced to do something about it when the Shogun orders him to. What isn't really explored is why the Shogun makes the decision to be rid of such a valuable asset as Jin Sakai. The truth is, the Shogun is both jealous and afraid of Jin's legend. In medieval Japan, no one was regarded higher than royalty, who were thought to be living gods. Feudal Japan saw several clan wars throughout its history but when a lowly samurai who fights as Jin did for the people of Tsushima his legend and status outgrew that of the Shogun. Jin did what he did to save the people, tarnishing his honour to save lives and ensure the enemy would not win. The people admired that. It's even see that the samurai reinforcements sought to take control of Tsushima from Lord Shimura after the campaign. Lord Shimura's "honour" led to his own decline. And the samurai who were supposed to protect Tsushima all died in a massacre because they charged into battle against a massive, ruthless force and left the people defenseless all in the name of honour. However, if the samurai had set their "honour" aside briefly, used smart tactics and only some tricks Jin had to resort to, the mongols would've never taken Tsushima in the first place and Jin wouldn't have been such a problem.

He watched all his friends die at Komada beach.
He watched clan Adachis fall, he witnessed the betrayal of Ryuzo and later on, Taka is murdered and so is his horse.
In all those times it became more clear to him that the samurai were useless against the Mongol Empire.
The Mongols knew exactly on how to counter the attacks from the samurai and Jin knew that if he wanted to save his homeland he would have to play dirty.

It makes sense though, that how you played yourself wouldn't change this story. As you said, there are a handful of missions and cut scenes that force your hand and make you do dishonorable things. Most of those things, however, were never witnessed by any other samurai and so it would be possible that Jin could have simply denied they ever happened. But the two moments you mentioned that are most damning to Jin are when he poisons the two soldiers before cutting the general's head off from behind and the incident when Jin poisons the entire Mongol garrison are both witnessed first-hand by Lord Shimura and the army of samurai sent by the Shogun. And unfortunately, those two acts alone would be enough dishonor to have warranted the penalty Jin ultimately has to face in the end. I'd like to think that maybe if Shimura alone had witnessed these things that he may have looked the other way and hid them from the Shogun. But when the army of loyal Shogun samurai saw it all too, well, they're certainly not going to just let Jin off with a slap on the wrist.
It was a noble effort to see what would happen, but unfortunately, this game's story is basically linear (and that's not a bad thing in this case; as the game was never marketed under the presumption that your choices and gameplay would effect the story).

    • @BaileyPoints

I just played the mission where you secure the forge. Taka said to me "I've never seen a samurai fight like that" while looking horrified, or sickened.
The entire fight, I stood outside and fought people with my sword, and used my bow on the archers.
I've been playing like a samurai, only doing otherwise when forced to by the game. I've found it disappointing how little that choice matters. The game still treats me like Jin is a ninja, constantly lurking in shadows and stabbing people in the back.
I would have loved a karma system in the game, staying loyal to the samurai's Bushido code or fighting like The Ghost, with a different ending for each.
I can only hope the railroading was to set up a sequel. To be fair though, the ending is hauntingly, mythically tragic, it was like watching an ancient legend be retold.

Ive completed this game very recently and chose to spare shimura. I find it quite interesting that even if you kill him nothing really changes because that is the legend youve built as the ghost and to the shogun you are nothing but a traitor that will be hunted forever. Jin lost literally everything to save his people but he broke free of a code that would have destroyed him.
Seeing this kind of makes me wish there was some alternate path or ending if youve played as nothing but a samurai, but i think it would kind of ruin the story they were trying to tell here. That being said for everyone that did play as a pure samurai to still get called dishonourable and a traitor by lord shimura, I can understand why some are very disappointed by this ending.
The khan knew all the samurais tactics and how their traditions are purely honour bound so he knew exactly how to exploit it. The only thing he didnt account for was jin becoming the ghost since he realised to beat his enemy he must adapt which is what shimura and his samurai failed to do. What got me the most is you can see the pain in shimuras' eyes at what jin has become.. he doesn't want to do this but he must appease the shogun or his clan will be destroyed too
If anything jin sakai's samurai days are over, but as the ghost hes almost became the first ninja. Its a great story maybe one day we will get a sequel to the ghost.

i've seen lot of people complaining bout the fact that there is no secret ending but it makes sens for a couple of reasons...
    1. This game is more like a movie than anything else, guess what ? you don't change the outcome of a movie.
    2. The whole game is based around that dilemma between what you've been taught and what NEED's to be done. Facing an army alone or with a couple of buddy head on like the bushido dictate would mean end of the game before it even starts... FFS The intro proves that fighting using only honor would just bring death to everyone... they tried to fight head on with 80 samurai, lost one instantly by sending adachi sama to his death for no reason (jin even had to lie to masako about his death lol), the rest got trashed and the only reason jin survived was because of yuna...
Also, the first time we have to kill someone with stealth it's mentioned that we cannot go gun blazing because there is an hostage, if the npc in the game were not that stupid you would not even be able to reach the cage before they would kill him therefore the "honor" would bring death of the innocent you swore to protect.
it's actually funny that shimura kept thinking that the bushido would save the people he swore to protect when when he heard the khan or whatever his name is litteraly say "i know all about you including how you fight and how to counter you all" ...
so to me no, having a secret ending where we fought with honor is stupid because it would mean sacrificing many life's, hostage and people who wanted to help even tho they were not samurai... throwing away these life is no honourable thing.

The sequel if they do ever make one, I hope they add a choice system like what they did in the Infamous series. Where good or bad choices changes how the people treat you and how the environment changes. If there was a choice system and Jin choose to be honorable then the ghost being the story to inspire the people of tsushima would be pointless. But it would be cool to see how the Shimura would react to his nephew/son being either the honorable Samurai or the dishonorable killer who wins a battle at all costs.

I love this game. It was so well written, the soundtrack especially when you get ghost mode for the first time chasing the mongels. The one thing I could not stand and I had it when games do this is the enemy tracking. The teleporting or gliding. You clearly dodge an attack and the enemy just nanchalantly redirects towards you or floats towards you. This only happened on the higher difficulties because they didn't want peole to just dodge easily out of the way but that is so stupid that they did that. When you get chased by a spearmans thrust for like 50yards because the game is programed to have the enemies attack to hit you unless you do a PERFECT dodge is annoying as hell.
I can't count how many times I've dodge an attack only for the enemy to redirect while coming down to hit me or to track me even though I dodged behind them.
Still amazing game but I pray they remove enemy tracking. You can make games difficult without purposely programming in heat seeking missle meelee attacks.

Suckerpunch could have implemented the 'choice' system. But I guess they wanted to tell the story which fit best for the options offered.

This ending was different from mine. I choose to spare him and then I spawned in a different hut in a different location with it being sunny and no storms in a red suit.

I think jin sakais fathers armor is designed after one of the support characters in the movie, The Last Samurai in which tom cruise is the main character.

i think there should have been 4 endings. you could have been the guardian of shimura or the ghost of shimura, for the guardian you could have been ordered to kill yuna for doing something (stealing from shogun to help taka etc) and you choose to kill her or spare her, and the ghost endings we alr have

I feel sparing Lord Shimmura really finishes off Jins character arc as the Ghost because the line “you have no honor”…when he chooses to spare his life he goes back to the line “I have no honor…” and then proceeds to put on the Ghost mask! For me this was a true ending for the ghost…

I've done only what was necessary in my playthough, A mix of Samurai and, well Ninja tactics, which ever was superior, some times, i enter a Mongol camp and left it dead and deserted without someone letting out a scream, Others i charge in as a proper samurai, With or without the Ghost stance, Fear, in the end was the greatest weapon i gladly wore against the Mongol. An enemy scarred shitless, is an enemy that'll make easier mistakes and opening up opportunities.

I've played more hours of this game than I care to admit, and to this day, I only use stealth when I have to. If there are no hostages, then I'm going in like Dynasty Warriors EVERY time. Assassinating enemies is fun, but it's not nearly as fun as taking on 30 Mongols at once.

I know that this is 3 years ago but I wanted to chime in on the story and why nothing would’ve changed for Jin and his Uncle. I read a book called, “Shogun” by James Clavell. In this book, I learned that honor and punishment were somewhat one and the same. If the people of Japan do anything that goes against the shogunate, it was considered treason and you were honored by Death. In this particular case, Jin used poison and the Mongolian empire studied this method and began to use this method in order to continue to kill Japanese citizens. Because of this and the people beginning to lose trust in the empire. Shaun deemed Jin Sakai a traitor to the nation. Had Lord Shinmura succeeded in killing Jin. He would have been able to keep the Sakai lands and awarded the opportunity to start over.
