Alcoholica! Even they forget what they were playing themselves!
+Carlos Espinal your talking about the demo tape or jk ing?
Kirk Hammett played bass and Newsted played rhythm? Holy shit, I must've been living a lie all my life...
Malapropify he did play bass live.
Necrothescist T It was when they did Am I Evil. There's a video on it too where James was in drums
My favorite song on this demo album is, "na na na NAAAAAA! na na na NAAAAAAAAA!"
Two sides of the spectru though and I feel as though enter sandman is most likely the most over rated Metallica song , also included in the list is one
HIIIIIIIIIIPSTEEEEEERRRRRRR
Mine is Wherever I May Nana Na..
Chase Price Uh, no...
Doyledeth it goes na na naaaaaa! na na na naaaaaa!.
not na na naaaaaa! na na na naaaaaa!
It's cool hearing black album songs with Justice vocals.
+Beholder505 the justice demo has puppets vocals
***** actually i cant tell between the difference of kill, ride and puppets vocals
by late 1989 james had his black album vocals
And he lost the "black album vocals" halfway through the black album tour. He fucked his vocal chords up while recording the black album and was never the same again after that. Sounded ok for the first few months of the touring in 91-92 but by 93 his voice was so shot he was almost choking out the vocals. Almost like on the unforgiven demo on this upload.
Not really. His black album vocals were due to him receiving vocal lessons because he blew out his voice on the cover song So What. So Bob got him a vocal coach and he started warming up with his "Yi yi yi yi yi yi yaaaw" tape that I think he still uses.
Enter Wanana, The Unforyana, Nothing Else Banana ...
Just to clarify to those commenting that the quality is low here. It is a demo - meaning that they aren't striving for perfection here. If you want to hear good quality then listen to the final version... It is more to get the ideas down so that they have a template to build upon. Really, we shouldn't be hearing this at all because people tend to still judge it as a final recording psychologically.
I don't. I consider it just an interesting thing to hear.
Not a thing to listen to everyday, though.
Damm good no matter what!!!
I don't know why people struggle to understand that.
+Adis, almost agreed perfectly. Just that I do listen to demos... every day. Nothing wrong with that :)
It is not sound like a demo exactly, demos are not tuned this way! It's like a preprint before the finals.
That chug in james guitar tone in Enter Sandman.
Fuck.
...sounds like dogshit.
ami2evil Do you even metal?
...I eat Plutonium, of course I metal.
Then why don't you recognize a hardcore guitar chug?
,,,it's not hardcore, it's clipping, and the tone sounds like asspiss.
Wherever I Wananana
Wanana i may roam
james hetfield guitar tune give me an eargasm ! that's how an heavy guitar is supposed to sound
standard tuning? yea its nice.
Real guitarists sound heavy in standard and don't need to tune to drop Z to sound heavy;D
Bats drop Q !!!
i hate dropping tuning too much , even just with E string lowered to D , make me play like " ohhh look at me , i'm so power!! hammer on and pull off time !!! " ( and also i get a kinda of muse like sound.. )
i use D# tuning or flat D just when strictly required .
once i got to rise my tunign to G , no, not lower G, that was fun !
actually, Slipknot's guitarists are for real and they tune to Drop A sometimes.
It’s impossible to overstate the left turn Metallica took after Justice with the black album. The two albums are just so different. From prog metal to a rock band with pop sensibilities and hooks. Both incredibly intricate musically but so so different.
prog metal?
@@eef590 And Justice was about as progressive and technical as it got at the time. Metallica really pushed metal forward and it even spawned a few genres of metal
@@Just_JoshE justice was definitely on the more technical side but acting like it was the most insane thrash album out there is flat out wrong
@@progfox Furry
@ good eye. would you like a gold star?
I always love hearing Metallica demo's. It's always interesting to hear these and then the finished product.
MonkeyBusiness 87 the death magnetic demos were better than the finished songs
I liked the finished songs themselves but the production was terrible. That is what killed it for me. Metallica did great but Rick just took a cheetos nap all over it and threw it out. Of course that has been his style for years now. If they would have gotten somebody else the end product would have been better for me.
MonkeyBusiness 87 well just look at the difference between death magnetic and hardwired, the production is incredible
Agreed, let's hope they stick with Greg for awhile.
all the nananas u mean
spit out my drink at Nothing Else Matter's "ya na na nana ya na yana"
bro same
Damn, James really has some nice solos going on here
I've always preferred his more soulful style.
wherever i may roam sounds way better in terms of solos
Wherever I May Nana
The intro to the unforgiven is amazing!! Finger style, the way it should've been.
Well wasn't it?
It sure was
@@Oelcorv now he plays it with a pick live, in the 90's he did it finger style
@@juanantoniocarmonacamacho3344 yep. He finger picked it back in the day. He strums now and it doesn’t sound nearly as good
LOOKS LIKE A ''WHITE'' ALBUM NOW!
*THIS ALBUM IS FROM (1991), NOT 1990)!*
+NECHO II its the demo
*SO YOUR TELLING ME THAT THE DEMOS OF THE BLACK ALBUM (which is the exact opposite colour to the title of this album.) CAME OUT A YEAR PRIOR TO THE ACTUAL BLACK ALBUM?*
NECHO II who cares
*I'M JUST GOING BY THE HISTORY OF METALLICA AS I KNOW IT!*
These demos sounds like the Justice album guitars were being used
good ear! I definetely can hear that too. Also drums feel a bit like Justice and not that whole, huge sound of the black album.
In a DVD documentary about the making of the Black Album they say that James used a Mark IV while listening to the Sandman demo.
They were definitely still in the Justice head space at that time as they had just done a bunch of shows in Spring of 1990 where they were playing songs similar to what they did during the Justice Tour. So they were approaching these songs with their And Justice For All mentality, and also keep in mind that at this point in time they hadn't given Bob Rock the gig of being their producer.
Richard Oranger lel
Before Bob Rock got in and pussified it
20:34 - 20:48 Sounds incredible with the tones! It's even sexier the second time with both guitars too. Metallica never ceases to amaze me with their subtle lics and raw power.
This is how Metallica sketches its masterpieces. Damn
I love these oldschool demos. Insane where it went from here.
Nanatallica.
Yeahnallica
Just listen to the AJFA demos it has lots of nana in it
@@benharlan2937 DEAR MOTHER DEAR FATHER, WANA NANA NAANANAAA
Sounds like James is playing all the guitars. The solos sound nothing like Kirk. And I'm not comparing them to the album versions, I'm just listening to the playing style - that's just not how Kirk plays. Sounds like James to me.
if I'm not mistaken, James and Lars laid out the demos, and most of the demo recordings are of them. I like the start of the Roam solo on this one better, btw lol
+MaggaraMarine James was playing all the guitars ^^
you are correct sir
Those solos on demo just showed me why James is not the lead. Not to be rude at all man
@@geraldorodriguew3605 the solo from unforgiven is good
the guitar tone sounds killer
"SAD BUT TROOOOOO"
I wonder when did "sad but troooo" become "sad but troow"
The Enter Sandman solo in the demo was played by James.
Ivan Caroselli Really???
It also sounds like James playing the solos on Wherever I May Roam, and Sad But True.
James plays all the guitars in the demos. It's always been just James and Lars.
yeah but KIRK CAME up with Enter Sandman riff and solos on most of the songs
Not true, Hetfield came up with the riff while on the toilet.
That rhythm at the beginning in Sandman....
James written his songs like a true rock musician. First create the "vocal tune" and some words start to come out of subconsciousness. Peoiple int he comments who laught at that have obvoisly never played in a rock band, thinking rock lyrics are first written as some bloody poetry and then put into music LOL
I can imagine most people are making fun of it not to put down James but more in a way that's just funny to them.
Wherever i may rome: nanananananana
You speak as much english as Hetfield sings proper english on this demo album.
You know that inteligent people can speak multiple languages and use google translater? Well the less inteligent you are, the more you comment i guess.
Haha i cracked up when i heard that
nanananana is the best way to compose a melodic line....
Where ever I may nana-Yeah xD
I love "Wherever I May Roam" without the formed lyrics. I write stuff like this too. This is A+++
Excellet versions to sing for non-Englush speakers, lol.
Really nice listening to Hetfield's solos. In my mind he's always been the better player.
Facts
These are not Hetfield's solos ffs
@@RafaelCDet Nothing Else Matters
@@RafaelCDet hetfield played alot of the solos on these demos
Wherever I May Roam is pretty good
Sad But True with AJFA tone and slightly faster is surprisingly BRUTAL, love it
Dude it has the justice tone👌
James sounded really good on the unforgiven very raw and passionate
I wish we saw more solos from James. This actually showcases he can shred as well, and pretty good at it too
There is something authentic about the raw side of these demos and still sounding pretty good for something unfinished, I've always loved the guitar solo from the "wherever i may roam" demo, thanks for sharing 👍🏽
I had a chuckle as soon as James started singing on the Unforgiven.
love the Black Album but just imagine if they keept the chruncy guitartone on the release
they did lol. its uber crunchy
@@jaymz the demos are even more crunching compared to the studio
Gracias Marcelo por compartir estos tesoros. Un saludo.
Love these demos. Some of these demos were included on the Black album singles that came out in the 90's. Would be cool if all these were included on the deluxe box set of Black album which is being prepared for release by the band an co as i type this. :)

Demos are so cool!
Intro to Sandman sounds like Jasons bass on the lower pickup or Hetfield using his upper pickup with some kinda bass synth or chorus
its just james and lars
James played the solo? Don't think so
are u serious?
Oscar NotYourBuissines
Simon näslund so ur telling me he recorded different tracks? Why wouldn't kirk play?
Simon näslund he made a final product which still sucked
Jason and kirk don't play on these demos its lars and James
+forevertobeginning Because he's sloppy?
+forevertobeginning Jason is awesome, he is objectively awesome.
+Matthew Brett Umm all four are playing.
+Erwin S umm no they're not. It's called multitrack recording. They recorded the drums, guitars and bass seperately. It is lars and James, they used to joke on the cd booklets for the singles that these demos came from that it was kirk and Jason's day off. I think the exception is the unforgiven demo which was recorded in the studio by all four of them. The load demos are the same...
+Danny Hayson demos are recorded like albums.
You can really hear the broken blown out voice in the unforgiven 😢
Demos are always fun
omg sad but true sounded fuckin awesome. these fuckin palm mutes omg fuckin splendid as other friends said it sounds like its from justis album awesome awesome eargasm
Sad But True has a little Master of Puppets vibe to it and I glad they changed The Unforgiven solo
Man that guitar sound is just crushing. Wish James went back to that.

I like the lyrics on the demo of Wherever I may roam
"The White Demos"
He sang nothing else matters better on the demo than the album lol.
nanananananana
The memory remains before the memory remains
And Justice for all sound!!!! that's great!!!
inmortal...Metallica es eternoooo...
Damn, the demo is lit
Where do people get these things?
A lot of them was released with the singles.
They repackage them years later and sell them for $200 with pictures on the boxing
I used to have them all on MP3 from a bootleg forum. Have a double CD with Justice demos.
the demos to the black album are on the b-side of the vinyls
It was a cold night in the fall of 1993. I met James at a bar. He had the demo tape for The Black Album on his table. I challenged him to an arm wrestling match. I won and released it to the world!!
Awesome
This was recorded on an old 4 track thingy that James used during the ride the lightning demos.
Holy shit, the guitar has the Justice tone!
It's funny hearing these songs like this.. The growth in musicianship between this and the album is astounding
Metallica!my best groupe forever
the waananana black album lol
Its so amazing how its so raw love it then the producer gets it aka bob rock
Behold, the mighty metallica
It's sad that they sounded like this even on a demo. It's basically like every live show they ever played post-ReLoad.
Wherever I Na-Na-Na
Yadana na na noweowwwwwwwwww! Yah yeah! I love their demos. :)
Love them
Nothing Else Yana
O Brasil curte muito o Metallica
This is kickass, with cleaned up vocals, this would be so great
lol. yup, that's definitely lars.
And playing perfectly fine, for a demo that is.
he always plays like it's a demo
No he doesn't. At least not on the first five albums and Hardwired. The final product was well and truly beyond production standards.
it was just a joke:P
live he isn't that bad but the drums are always too loud on dvd's from concerts and stuff
@@russkate88 lol he messed up the unforgiven, the most basic song on drums. He couldn't even count on the hi hat without messing it up. How did he ever record justice? Effking hilarious I love him
I love the way Lars is rushing from the first beat he plays. :)
The wa na na na's between the yeahs is the best part.
Just came from listening to the other, earlier, demos and I'm, curious how things changed so much... but AJFA demos are missing
Oh I just want to play in a band and become semi-successful. Damn I hate life.
***** why should I? What would that accomplish?
***** Because their success is dependent on pictures?
***** How is it a habit?
***** This is CZcams, I don't want people to see my real face on youtube. And i'm confident, I have this prof picture because I like the character and its not Spideman this is the Joker. So you were wrong.
+The Extinct Surgeon I'm being serious, how old are you?
Mantap lagu2nya....👍🏻🤘🏻💥
Enter sandman's solo was incredible.
Listen unforgiven and feel a bit sad about how weak was getting James voice, i'm really glad that he changed style and gave us more good music
the tone is halfway between Justice and Black :O

Also, I'm so glad Kirk didn't use that solo in the final recording in The Unforgiven.
It's just James and Lars here, none of these solos are made by Kirk, they were only finished in the studio.
