I used to notice this frustrating pattern when I was an atheist studying ecology. Humans often follow the same pattern of consumption, famine, conflict and collapse, that yeast and other mindless creatures do over and over. It seemed so tragic to me that if we should be able to self-regulate and save resources during times of plenty and not consume and expand mindlessly to unsustainable degrees that guarantee suffering. But we don't. Including myself. Now I am Orthodox I understand why better, and I see the liturgical rhythm as the only treatment.

If you think about it, with all the big money making profits off of wild swings in valuations, ensuring we don't fast (removing stability and predictability in commodity markets) would be beneficial for them. The sayings of the Saints truly are timeless.

It's hilarious to think about Greece importing meat, which is totally unnecessary, unless people become addicted to processed, low-grade meat products from places like the Netherlands. As a typical example of historical Greek nutrition existing in our time, the island of Samothrace by itself - a place inhabited by only about 2,500 people year-round - slaughters over 6,000 goats every year at Pascha. The meat is beyond delicious, and costs very little to raise, as the goats run wild on the island for most of the year. The regions of Greece which have preserved their ancestral approach to nutrition simply cannot be starved by outsiders with controlling influence. But once people become addicted to junk food, things get evil, quickly. Addiction to alcohol, sugar, coffee, tea and cigarettes is the largest current driver of the economy of food, and is destroying mankind in body and soul.

I don’t think you’re wrong about your point.
However the population pretty much everywhere has grown significantly, and the percentage of food industry workers and land use has shrunk dramatically. It’s a trend everywhere. Only specialization to the point of saturating your “own market” to the point of viable exporting would keep you from needing to import a product. But then your specialization would lead to a need to import what you don’t produce. Just like in a household.
Ideally you produce and export necessities and import entertainment or other unnecessary goods.

Reducing consumption can avoid overconsumption, but it’s also going to find a new equilibrium anyway.
But it is also true that there is a max capacity, even a lower sustainable capacity. So keeping demand below that level is good for markets.
I see the opposite of this happening in entertainment. Too easy to produce junk, market is flooded, and just the time to select among the offerings absorbs resources that reduce production from necessary goods.

I don’t understand what they would have done with dairy in orthodox countries in the olden days during the fasting period.
Because they would have had animals for producing dairy. But I don’t think they would have wanted to waste it, and I don’t know what form they could have kept it in that it wouldn’t spoil.

Father, what about women who develop low iron, anemia due to orthodox fasting. I know few who needed iron infusions, even blood transfusion. One hospital never had a patient with such low iron, patient was fainting countless times a day, took a long time to diagnose. Doctors thought it was leukemia or some cancer. Nope, just low iron.
I myself couldnt get my iron back up with supplements for years, my hair fell out, nails... health ruined due to low iron.

Really, the means of the fasts are ridiculous. There is no population group that should engage in it. It's absolutely horrible for your health, especially those Orthodox Christians that don't consume seafood during the fasts(this is really the only meaningful nutrition they get). If monks want to deprive their bodies, let them do so, but to force it on the lay people is spiritual abuse plain and simple. The fasts should revert to intermittent fasts, or fasts from pleasures, not fasts from foods that are nutritious. To reject good foods is Gnostic anthropology.

    • @dragonwolf2370
      @dragonwolf2370 Před 21 dnem

Well, our priests were aware we had other health issues, and insisted we fast as per normal. Due to my other health issues my priest told me to fast on oil. I did. It took a long time for our doctors to even find out we had low iron. My friend fainted 5-10 times a day for a year, became bed bound, couldnt even shower or go to toilet without fainting. Complete disability. Torture for her family. She looked white as a ghost, like cancer patient. Doctors, even specialists didnt check iron. Until she almost dropped dead, even developed heart condition from low iron.
It took going to emergency room. Even there doctors and nurses were dismissive. They didnt believe her anything. Until hours of waiting they came in shock thinking her intestines or soemthing broke in her body and was bleeding internally. They couldnt understand how somebody could develop such low iron. Their records show, nobody ever had such low iron, even stuffed her red or white blood count, she needed blood infusion and iron infusion.
I needed hundreds of dollars in iron supplements, probably over a thousands dollars, which caused so many side effects. Nothing helped. Took years of trying to increase it but i kept fasting which would not help. Until i myself almost drop dead and need iron infusion, only then priest said "oh ok dont need to fast".
Women who menstruate shouldnt fast. Women need iron.
Two thirds of women who dont even fast have low iron. Throw in this extreme diet. Its a recipie for ***few years of hell***. Low energy, heart conditions, hair falling out etc.
Priests should warn women if they fast to monitor their iron levels.
Oh vitamin b12 was also low for my friend, she needed injections. I needed supplements.
So to do this fast as a woman, id need doctor appointments, 1000 supplements... and most doctors think its insane to do diet which just depletes all your vitamins.
My hair never recovered. May take years!
And to find out fasting doesnt work out for women, it takes years, and to fix, takes years.
Wish i never fasted. Wish i was warned of dangers.
Only few days ago i saw clip of a priest laugh how "everyone should fast, theres no dangers". Maybe not for men. For women, its catastrophic.

you should only fast if your priest gives you a fast to follow. First you start off gradually reducing meat consumption, until you fast with no meat at all. As for iron deficiency, there are vegetables that can give that nutrient, such as beans, lentils, and spinach
