For 50 years, I lived in a world of Shangri-La with my Bonnie until she was called by the Almighty to transcend above the blue sky. She now in a better place. This song reminds me how beautiful our life were from the first moments of our union until it ended with COVID. Each time I hear this song it takes me back to memories of dancing with an angel of such beauty. I will always love her and one day I will dance with her in our own Shangri-La💞💞💞💞

Knopfler is truly one of the premier guitarists out there…such a sweet tone he conjures out of his instrument.
I was going to comment on that just as I saw your post. He has a lot of guitars and he uses a lot of different guitars in a concert depending on the song. The tones that come out of those guitars is unbelievable.

I disagree with the "monotonic" description of Mark's voice. He has solid technique and inflection, understands pitch well and his voice is warm and melodious.

Knopfler has one of the best ear/feel/understanding of and insight into arrangement of any modern composer. Bringing a violin in for this tune, CONCEIVING of how eloquently it would support then carry the melody, it's almost magical. He does this with so many of his songs. He paints them the way an old master painted their portraits.

I'm thinking Mark used the same guitar when he recorded "Oldest Surfer on the Beach" with Jimmy Buffett. Like giving "Tiny Dancer" to Tina Turner, Mark just GAVE Oldest Surfer on the Beach to Jimmy. He and Jimmy were good friends. One of the MANY crossovers Mark has done. God Bless him!

If you can make magic with music then Mark Knoffler has found the recipe. I have been a fan of Dire Straits and Marks solos for many, many years (I'm 68) seen the band live a few times and bought my son up to appreciate them but I really do think that this song has it all and more. I originally put it there because it reminds me of my beloved Bonaire where my husband gave me the universe when he introduced me to scuba diving and where we regularly go. Watching the sun sink into the sea each night and a place where I am in tune with the stars and the joy that it brings us both. As I grow older, though, it reminds me that my whole life with my husband has been my own Shangri-la. Lucky me. Unfortunately Mark has given up touring, I count my lucky stars that I attended so many of his concerts. Presumably that's why many of his guitars were sold at a London auction only last week since he'll no longer be playing them. They raised over £8m, much of the money raised he's donating to charities.

The point of this song is not a location. Yes, Shangri-La means a paradisical location, Shangri-La is actually the name of the studio where Knopfler recorded the whole album. song is actually about love, youth and companionship. The singer knows youth doesn't last for ever, "it's here and then it's gone", "we may never love again". All the "surfer boys and girls" are the spirit of carefree youth. All the friendship, passion and freedom blend into a Shangri-La of the emotions - there is a place, but it's a place in his head/heart. "We may never love again" doesn't mean "This is a one-night stand"; it means "We may never love anyone else as much as we love each other at this moment." I love the Piano and the Violin. A beautiful song with a Meaning in our Lives!!

Found him a couple of years ago on a NPR interview. He was promoting his DTRW album and tour. Forgot how beautiful "pure" music sounds. Real musicians with serious "chops" and a songwriter who creats from his soul and then uses that instrument as an extension! Sorry he will probably not be doing any big tours again. He looked pretty worn out at his last show in MSG last September. Played beautifully though!😊
