What The Old F1 Manager Games Got Right

  • With Frontier Developments' F1 Manager 2022 just a few days away, here is a retrospective at the older, officially licensed F1 manager games.
    All of them were released over 20 years ago and in many ways they've aged quite badly, but there's also a lot they did well and features they've implemented that we've yet to see in an F1 game since. Everything from spying on other teams, to additional manufacturers to the banning and legalising of driver aids. In this video I go over what the Grand Prix Manager series, Grand Prix World and EA Sports' F1 Manager did so well.

    Licensed or not the only recent game to compare this to is Motorsport Manager.
    In terms of presentation F1 Manager 2022 looks amazing. There are just a few things that concern me:
    * Not being able to transfer from one team to the next.
    * Driver negotiations happening instantly rather than over a number of days
    * Not being about to manage teams in the lower tiers
    * Having to restart a brand new game after being fired

      I think there is a feature where A. You start a whole new career B. Get set back 5 races to do better or C. Redo the season

    One thing that I would like to see is to see some team change their livery for sponsor reason. Another point is to see some unpredictable issues, such as stalled to the formation la/start of the race. And final point is the possibility that a driver can stay out for a period after a hard crash, like GPM2

    would be cool all of the above and have your own team to run (as it'll prove that a 26 car grid is needed) -> would be cool to see how an academy system would work in it as well

    Say what you will about EA's version, I loved that you could choose the sponsors for the car and they actually appeared on the 3D engine. And it's something I'd like to see added for 2023.

    I’m so excited for F1 Manager 2022 I loved in the regulation changes you get in, I enjoy the transfers in those games and the teams in Grand Prix Manager 2 going bankrupt and new teams going in was interesting. What’s your plan for F1 Manager 2022 Career Mode?

    • @PSLRacing
      @PSLRacing  Před rokem +11

      I'm honestly not sure at the moment, but I probably won't do a normal career mode playthrough series. That's partly because every other CZcamsr will be doing that and partly because the number of videos you would have to make to get a few seasons in would be huge. So probably more like season summaries from a career mode rather than one race per video.

    It would be great to see you have a go at F1 Manager Pro from 97. It's UI is horribly dated, and the game is quite complicated, it and GPM2 still stand out as the best F1 Management games of all time (Team F1/Pole Position is close up there). F1 Man 2022 just looks a bit shallow and arcadey to me. I think the official F1 license is holding the game back, amongst other things, but I suppose without it they wouldn't make enough money for such a game to be worth it.

  • @dragroch5536
    @dragroch5536 Před rokem +1

    What Motorsport Manager did not achieve is unpredictable team progress, because that game always seems to have steady progress forward with inevitably having the title winning car. EA's F1 Manager is literally just "easy win on year 3" sort. Grand Prix World though can randomly screw a player over but that doesn't seem to happen too often. Grand Prix Manager 2 nailed it.

    Having watched this video, it makes you wonder how different the licencing agreements and terms were with the FOM during the Bernie/Max Moseley-era compared to now with Liberty Media.
    When things like teams dinamically change sponsors and engine suppliers, nowadays, we're lucky, if driver transfers are allowed.
    And I agree, from a licencing standpoint, Motorsport Manager is still one of the best games in this genre.

    There was another little F1 Manager Game from the early 90s with the Datas from the 91 Season, but withous MSC. It was a game looked a bit like an Excel Program. But I liked it very much to play. You can hire Drivers and Mechanics, Engine, Chassis etc. It was from Wizard company I think. And there was another Version with the 94 Datas as well, with MSC but without Senna.

    I played a lot of Grand prix world and I mean a lot and i really loved that game, but once you reached the "endgame" that's it you were there and losing if you played normally was impossible.
    Now I get it when you have the most money the best drivers and the best team you should be winning but I really wonder how the new game Will address this. All in all i'm super excited for the game and your series!

    Low balling, eh? None of those were even remotely close to Software 2000's F1 Manager (or Pro). Second best, is probably Ascaron's F1Team, and third is Pole Position. Never been a fan of Microprose's garbage and EA stuff is so buggy that I could get it to work only once in a blue moon. Special shout out to Sinclair's version of F1 manager from 1985, as rudimentary and crude it might have been- it's what got me into the management gaming to begin with.

      Software 2000 F1 Manager Professional is excellent. I am interested in the other two games you mention. I have found Ascaron's Team F1 only but the only management game called Pole Position I can find is it being another name for Ascaron's Team F1

      @@floscan i may be having a "candle cove" moment. i can vividly see the game, and it's not the same as Ascaron's although it came out around the same time. It was a bit of disappointment, since F1 manager was in every way superior, so I've played it for about a month and switched to Software 2000. I think, it came out in 1997, the graphics were 3D, but glitchy as they were still in their infancy. Anyway, sorry to be of little help, but if you are into this genre, checkout Amiga's Formula 1 Masters.

    Came here after playing f1 manager 22. I played a lot of grand prix world in the past and I adore it.
    In comparison, f1 manager 22 feels more like micro-management at the track side while grand prix world is more like a factory based management.
    In terms of graphics and illustration of the race itself, new game smashed it out of the park. But Grand Prix world still holds a place in my heart for how unique of an experience it was

    F1 Manager 2022 is not that good simulator, just a good looking game, is like a football Manager with FIFA graphics bud dumbed down managerial activities, you're just a passenger MM was more challenging, and copying the worst of MM (setup minigame) doesn't help.
