    -----------------------
A tornado like this one forms from a supercell, which is a storm with a persistently rotating updraft. This rotation is caused by strong turning and increasing of winds with height. As the first storm towers form, they begin ingesting the spin these winds create in the atmosphere. Over time, as the storm strengthens (sometimes in as little as 30 to 60 minutes) a low-level mesocyclone takes shape. Visually, this is often seen with a developing wall cloud. From here, the process becomes complicated but familiar: A push of air from behind the storm (the rear flank downdraft) wraps around this low-level mesocyclone as air flow into the storm increases. This all helps lower the pressure underneath the mesocyclone and concentrate the rotation. If everything works out, a tornado is born. And if everything works out too well, a violent tornado like this EF-4 is born. #tornado #weather #science #nature #twisters #twister #supercellthunderstorm #twister #oklahoma #tornadoalley

It's alright. Come live in the Midwest. Here in Kansas the standard response is to stand on the porch filming it and making guesses which way it's gonna go. Why do you think the casualty rates are always lower than you'd expect? Everyone is filming. Cameraman never dies. 😅
Seriously though, I'm always blown away by how low the casualties tend to be from even the most massive storms. Look up what Moore, OK looked like after it was hit. It looked like Hiroshima. Basically half the city was literally gone. Reduced to the ground. Multiple schools full of children were hit directly by the tornado. I say all that because when you see the damage and know how many people were directly hit by that mile wide EF5 storm, it's incredible that it resulted in 27 deaths and 212 injuries. Given the hundreds, even thousands, directly hit by that storm, those numbers are INCREDIBLY low. The people in Moore were incredibly lucky, all things considered.

Big enough to be awe inspiring, small enough to be witnessed in full, horrifying glory. A hurricane is just a big storm system with days of warning. Tornadoes are small, personal, and concentrated destruction that appear with often only minutes of warning. They're violent and can disappear just as swiftly as they came.

How many times more powerful than the atomic bomb ? I forget the number, but that number was kind of shocking to me. As was how small of particles, the debris was ground into. A man's car, ground so small, to not be identifiable as anything other than metal particles. Not one single piece, big enough to indicate that it came from a car. Like it just disappeared. And tragically, there was a person, who also - just disappeared, ground to nothing but particles. That's some power. Quite terrifying, I felt.

@brianwade879 tornadoes and bombs have one thing in common: instability. But in terms of destruction and sheer power, atomic bombs are hundreds of times worse. A shockwave that disintegrates anything in the center with temperatures that reach hotter than the surface of the sun. Even past 5-10 miles, you would experience a shockwave and maybe even radiation burns. Radiation poisoning is a whole nother ballgame as well. Arguably, hurricanes are worse. Don't get me wrong, tornados are dangerous and can cause an immense amount of destruction and death, and they can be unpredictable in terms of where it will be next, however they are more of an isolated event and often don't last very long. Now compare them to hurricanes, which are weather systems that can be hundreds of miles across, cause dangerous storm surge and flooding, have consistent wind speeds of 71+ mph, last for days or even weeks on end, and have a larger area of impact due to their size and hurricanes definitely sound worse to me. That's just my opinion.

As a Floridian I feel as though others could agree with me, tornadoes are 10x scarier than hurricanes. For hurricanes we have days sometimes even weeks to prepare, and go in land,to the point that we don’t even take hurricanes seriously sometimes. For tornadoes you have if you’re lucky a matter of minutes. Mother Nature is the most beautiful yet terrifying thing there is in this world.

Guys, storm chasing means, 'chasing' storms at a safe distance. NOT winding up directly inside of them. That lightning was a warning, power lines aside.
5:25-5:40 are INSANE: how fast, how massive, how loud, and how dark they move through and swallow everything.
Unless you're a professional, have the right experience and equipment, and know the E-rating. Glad you're safe, I know the experience is one you'll never forget. Thanks for sharing it 😮🙏

I live in Oklahoma. Tornadoes are very common here. May is the peak month. This particular tornado had violent rotation. This is what meteorologists call a stovepipe tornado because of its shape. A tornado doesn't have to be large to be powerful and destructive. This tornado would destroy brick houses. Sometimes when a tornado decreases in size it increases in strength. The widest tornado on record was 2.6 miles wide near El Reno, Oklahoma on May 31, 2013. Wind speeds were measured at 302mph in the field, but were likely higher at some point. Local chief meteorologist Gary England said the velocities on radar were unlike anything he had ever seen before.
