Their last Manzai performance was in 91’, before I was born. They finished their main story early and have been doing side quests since 91’.

ダウンタウン used to come on Fuji TV in NYC. No subtitles. but they were funny anyway. Now that I can read it they're even funnier!! 🎉

1:40 - 1:54 I was laughing so hard at the "hit your hip". And the first one really sounded like he was falling.

One thing I love about Japanese comedy... it sometimes takes a bit to get going but when it hits it gets you good, a deep kind of laugh.

@mitsubachiii You're welcome! This is a lot of good fun for me to do (and good practice) as it is for people who enjoy it.
I'm not too familiar with ダウンタウン (this is the first performance of theirs that I've subbed), but considering this is from the early 90s and they're still rocking the Japanese comedy scene, you must be right!

Philippines doesn't mean anything here. The point is: As the show goes, the word studied becomes nonsense. So it can be replaced by any country, such as brazil or Egypt, which are not usually used like "ah".

There's a mistake made with the subtitles: Hamada cals Matsumoto "Matsumoto Hitoshi" not "Masatoshi" but because he says it really fast one can mistake it for sounding like "Masatoshi"

This is very easy to understand. After watching a lot of Japanese comedy over the past 8 years, I can say that most comedy on TV in Japan is quite simple, filled with crude humour and slapstick. Rakugo is deep, manzai is not.

I've lived in Japan the comedy is not as deep as you think it is 85% of stuff is slapstick, puns, or bawdy humor. That said their is nothing wrong with those types of humor, Shakespeare himself used them for the same reason they have mass appeal, I'm just saying its not very deep. Matsumoto is honestly one of the only people really committed to expanding the horizons of what comedy is in japan and that's partially why hes moved away from the skit shows he used to do.
