    After my brother showed me a video of Jimmy Onishi's English Lesson segment on No Laughing High School 10 or 11 years ago, from thereon I never stopped watching Downtown and everything they do from Batsu Games, Kiki Series, Absolutely Tasty, Silent Library.....to name a few! Long live the Legends and also to all the cast most notably Cocorico and Tsuketei Hosei.

      It's funny how many of these I see.. I was the same. I just happened upon that exact segment of the High School batsu game and almost died laughing, I just couldn't believe it. I showed it to my grandfather and even he thought it was hilarious and I never saw him laugh... I had struck gold. But over the years the gaki no tsukai games have gotten a little stale, which is understandable.. Kinda sad they seem to be retiring it entirely though.

    I accidentally stumbled onto these guys about 5 years ago and have been a big fan ever since. Once you acclimatize to the fact that they can get away with so much more physically than comedy shows in the US, and gain a little understanding of their frequent satirical references to Japanese culturisms, it is clear why they can have worldwide appeal and get a larger fan base every year.

    The only problem is that Downtown has built up these incredible boots that nobody will be able to fill once they retire or pass away. They're true giants. The combi best positioned to be the top after Downtown is maybe Chidori, but I don't think Chidori has it in them to be as influential as Downtown.
    They're truly the gods of Heisei-era comedy. Nobody will come even close.

    Really great analysis. I first seen Matsumoto Hitoshi and Masatoshi Hamada in a variety show, Hey Hey Hey Music Champ when I was in high school. They have interviewed all kinds of musical talent there, including my favorites, Tommy February, Namie Amuro, TMRevolution, Ayumi Hamasaki, Whiteberry, BoA, EE Jump, Move, and, not to mention, GACKT, and so many others. I've always loved that show and I still love it to this day. But the one thing that always shocked me is that Hamada is known for slapping people on the head. Men and women alike. I really didn't like that at first cuz I thought to myself who the heck does this guy think he is?! But then I did some research on why that type of humor is hilarious to Japanese audiences, and it says that he is regarded as "Super Sadist Hamada" and I understood a little bit, but I had to get used to that type of humor. Other than that, I've had very fond memories of that show. That was my first introduction into the wonders of Japanese variety shows.
    I subbed to your channel. Great job!

      私は日本人ですが、浜田が他人の頭を叩くのは好きではないし、日本人でも抵抗を感じてる人は多いと思います。しかし日本では頭を叩く文化は外国に比べると割と普通だし、みんな彼の性格をスーパーサディストと認識しているので、立場的になんとなく許されている感じです。

    • @RurouniStarchild
      @RurouniStarchild Před rokem

      @@user-vo6yc8dh5n Oh, great! I'm glad you felt the same way about Hamada's type of humor! Regardless of whether or not this gets any laughs, that's still shocking to me. You don't hit someone's head like that! If it's towards Hitoshi, who has been his friend for decades, then that's fine to a degree since they're both comedic veterans and play off each other very well. But don't slap everyone else on the head, especially women! That, to me, was never funny at all. That's assault. It's just my opinion.

Something funny in japan does not necessarily need to be funny outside of japan. And vice versa. I'm indonesian, and the comedy here have a very different taste compared to american and or japan. I have tried other japanese comedians' manzai, they have the same kind of taste. And yet some of them i find funny, and some dont. And downtown is one that is very funny IMHO.
