Why is theological education important for all Christians?

- Theology belongs to the whole church, not only to pastors and seminary professors. From one of our Ask Ligonier events, Stephen Nichols explains why theological education is valuable for all of God’s people.

I totally agree. Without a proper understanding of theology from the pew, you won’t know if the preacher is sound or not.
Study to show thyself unto God, a workman that is not to be ashamed, but rightly dividing the word of truth.
This statement pretty much sums up the reformation. When most common people were illiterate and the Bible was only in Latin instead of the languages of the region, they were forced to just believe whatever they were fed by the papacy and the RCC. Thank God for people like Waldo, Huss, Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, Knox, and the other Reformers who gave the common man the ability to check what they were being taught by the Word.

To quote R.C. (badly) it's not enough to just read the Bible, we have to study it.
Dr. Sproul's book, "Everyone's a Theologian" is so useful to me.
How do we not learn God's Word without studying God's Word and the theology within? RC even defined what theology is: the STUDY of God.

I'm from the Lutheran side of the fence and I agree with the gentleman. I was always a well read Christian. Now that I'm getting older and semi-retired, I've been working on a 6 course certificate program from a seminary online. I'm almost finished and thinking about an MA in Religion, just for fun and edification. Why should aspiring clergymen have all the fun?

For 2,000 yrs people, including Christians, have said that Christianity is a "Religion". But the problem with that is:
"True" Christians ("Born Again" Spiritually); are the ONLY ones that have ever lived; that will go to Heaven. All the way back to Adam and Eve. Whether YOU and any one else believes it or not. And YOU and your "ilk" WILL know this; to be "fact absolute" on "Judgment Day".
Thus, the satan-led world, including YOU, have two choices:
1. "The non Born Again is a religion; and true Christianity is NOT a religion"
2. "The Born Again IS a Religion; and there can never be any other "religion". Regardless what they call it!".
Because...Jesus' children must be Born Again. And ALL non Born Again; will go to hell. Thus, true Christianity; can NOT Be a religion*; IF any other belief is a religion. Because ALL of the others; are children of satan. So they are "satanists", NOT "religion-ist's" believe it not.

So, the point here is that all theology should ultimately lead to doxology
If theology doesn't lead to doxology, then we've actually missed the point of theology
So if you have theology without doxology, you just have dead, cold orthodoxy;
Which is horrible, right?
On the other side, we have people who say: "Ugh! Forget theology; I just wanna praise!" Right?
But, if we have doxology without theology, we actually have idolatry!
Because it's just a random expression of praise; but it's not actually informed by the Truth of who God is
So, God is concerned with both!
He's concerned with an accurate understanding of Him;
And that accurate understanding of Him, leading to a response of praise, adoration and worship towards Him
All Christians have differing mission fields but all Christians should be bereans and know and study Gods word, someone stepping into the pew should be called by God alone first not some random academic set up that makes people jump through there hoops. The little preacher man with no Facebook and public profile has just as much to offer as the public image of Christianity of the day as portrayed by those ministries that work in the public domaine.

They were taught by Christ directly. And it wasn’t just what they saw. They still had scripture and Christ to teach it to them. The Greek word for disciple is mathetes. It’s where we get the word mathematics. It means a learner.

I disagree with your doctrines of the Trinity and Free Will because they are from the Councils and the traditions of Men and not from Jesus or the Apostles teachings in Scripture?
Here is a simple example of what I mean?
When you explain Scriptures do you explain the verses by your theological scholarly opinion or do you search the Scriptures like a berean to find out the true meaning of what the words say in those verses?
Scriptures are explained by itself and by God the Fathers Spirit that illuminates the believer to understand the Truth of the message.
In another way of saying this, is the epistles are the true and only Commentary on the Gospel!
My point is theology is Man trying to explain who God is that's going to fail all of the time period?
Theology will never make known who God the Father is only Jesus Christ reveals who God the Father is all about?
1.) The definition of theology is: “the field of study and analysis that treats of God and of God's attributes and relations to the universe; study of divine things or religious truth; divinity.”
2.) Theological study is necessary because Jesus gave some to be pastors & teachers to His church for maturity purposes, see: (Ephesians 4:11-16)
3.) James said not many should become teachers due to a stricter judgment they will receive from God: “My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.
For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.”
James 3:1-2
The truth is, we all stumble in many things; so error is bound to come at some points.
The best a Christian teacher or pastor can do is to study & exegete scripture to the best of their ability, through the Spirit’s enablement, by prayer.
4.) If you study John’s Gospel verse 1:1-14 you will see that The Word was with God(distinction of persons), and the Word was God(affirmation of deity).
In John 10:30, the Greek is in plural form. Meaning Jesus literally said: “I and my Father, we are One”. Then the following context from John 10:30 shows that Jesus was accused of blasphemy because He, being a Man, claimed to be God.
5.) Multiple “Spirit Filled” Christians can say they have had illumination from the Spirit on a particular passage of scripture; yet they both contradict the interpretation in a debate… who is right?
Illumination of the Spirit is what the Spirit of God does to show what is already there, not to make us an infallible interpreter. If that were so, there wouldn’t be multiple denominations & interpretations.
6.) Peter mentions that “untaught” & “unstable” people twist scripture, so believers need to become “taught” & “stable” over time & diligent study.
Peter says: “and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation-as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles,
speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.”
II Peter 3:15-16
People can twist scripture for multiple reasons: bias, not reading the context, not applying the grammatical historical method, etc.
7.) I had the entire book of Revelation illumined for me when reading it by the Spirit of God in 2012, & there are still parts of it that I don’t understand, & thats not the fault of the Spirit of Christ.
8.) Peter says we are to desire the pure milk of the word; that we may grow. Nothing is said of prayer, this is a matter of study:
“Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.”
I Peter 2:1-3
9.) Holy Scripture is profitable for doctrine, which would include the doctrine(teaching) of the Trinity:
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
II Timothy 3:16-17
10.) The very fact that the apostles wrote letters to particular churches for 1st century Christians to read & learn means that what was written for them & for us is intelligible, understandable, & has the real possibility of discerning the meaning of the texts.
11.) An inspired Apostle of Christ who was an eyewitness of Jesus Himself, was at one point blamed by another inspired Apostle of Christ over an issue of hypocrisy, see: (Galatians 2:11-15).
Point being, if a man who received extraordinary revelation from Jesus can commit error leading to be blamed by another Apostle; what more can the rest of us be blamed with? Christians, such as myself, have struggled with hypocrisy, twisting scripture, & being negligent in other duties.
The best you can do is seek God in prayer & ask Him for help with teachers who preach & teach the Word of God. & since the teachers are also fallible; expect to have disagreements in doctrine(teachings) until the return of Jesus Christ.
For they bind heavy burdens, and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. All their works they do for to be seen of men: for they make their phylacteries broad, and make long the fringes of their garments, And love the chief place at feasts, and to have the chief seats in the assemblies, And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

11.) An inspired Apostle of Christ who was an eyewitness of Jesus Himself, was at one point blamed by another inspired Apostle of Christ over an issue of hypocrisy, see: (Galatians 2:11-15). Point being, if a man who received extraordinary revelation from Jesus can commit error leading to be blamed by another Apostle; what more can the rest of us be blamed with? Christians, such as myself, have struggled with hypocrisy, twisting scripture, & being negligent in other duties. The best you can do is seek God in prayer & ask Him for help with teachers who preach & teach the Word of God. & since the teachers are also fallible; expect to have disagreements in doctrine(teachings) until the return of Jesus Christ.

I remember when I was starting out reading the Bible and didn't understand the parables because at the time being a babe it was confusing to me. Then I prayed to the Lord to send the Spirit to open my eyes and then to my embarrassment the answers were there all along but I could not see or comprehend them at the time but now I can see and understand them.
