This is my baptism hymn (my maternal grandma was 100% Swedish). When my maternal grandpa took my mom & aunt to visit family in Sweden in July 2001, they sang this hymn at church. Since Grandpa, Mom & Aunt Sandy have this hymn memorized in English, they were able to sing along while the congregation sang in Swedish. There used to be a store called Scandinavian Imports here in Topeka, & at that store, I found a decorative plate with the words to this hymn in Swedish; I bought it to give to my mom.
Love this growing up Swedish-American, and near Augustana College. I used to be able to sing the first verse in Swedish. My cousin sang this at my father and brother's funerals (in Swedish.)
I assume you mean Rock Island’s Augie; my alma mater is the other Augie, in Sioux Falls, which is a Norwegian ELCA school. I now live in Topeka, KS, which is 350 miles to Sioux Falls & 425 to Rock Island. There are at least 2 alumni of your Augie who are members of my church here in Topeka.

Beautiful. My great-grandparents emigrated to the US from Sweden, and this was my great-grandmother's favorite hymn.

Small world. I’m reminding myself of these hymns as we prepare for my grandma’s funeral, which will take place just down the road from Augie’s campus.
