I would love to get treatment. I have great insurance but i cant find anyone whos willing to treat me. Im on 50 goddamn waiting lists and have been for 2 years.
@@nts3208 Yeah, there are plenty of therapists who will work on an income sliding scale. Mine does, and it took me maybe one or two months to get in after my intake appointment. Seems like a lot when you’re at your lowest and you’re utterly desperate, I know, but if you can hang in there, you can find someone. Look around and get the help you need, you don’t have to live like this.

As someone with an advanced creative degree and the decades of debt and near poverty that follow, I understand where you're at now. As someone further along I can say the edges smooth out and normal attainable goods like appliance transportation and hobby transportation can co-exist. Until then, thanks for reminding me that what I felt and went through wasn't mine alone. Nobody gets what they deserve but everyone gets what they get. If you can figure out how to think less about it, that energy can go toward getting more. Its not easy but this seems like the right way to start.

Well put, I myself have learned much about being content with what I got. Love my 08 Toyota Solara and while I have 69 mustang fastack near finished, I wish I still had my old 65 coupe that was my first. Because of life and family sold it for a dad van. I’m good now but I’ll always feel for the ones I let go for reasons despite wanting to keep it. Hope all car guy drams come true.
Roman, I went out directly after your Saab story and purchased a semi clapped 9-3 from a kid who didn’t know what he had. I cut him down by $100 too but could have cut harder, but he had his first kid on the way so yeah.

Not to get all bootsrappy but this is proof you can push through anxiety and become something despite a on thumb on the scale. Celebrate Roman's success, he's not a common example. I can't imagine RCR without his vulnerability, ironically it's an asset.
I'm still listening to the whole video, but just wanted to say - Roman, you're an AWESOME writer because you can translate really complicated feelings into words so perfectly. Take time for yourself and allow yourself to celebrate your wins - you deserve them! I think some items become unintentional buckets for our emotional weight - we dump the feelings and problems we haven't or can't yet process. Some people keep dumping those buckets into new buckets, hoping the next one has enough holes to drain the problems for us. Others try to dump the buckets, only to watch them fill again with new problems or requiring newer, bigger buckets. Some of us eventually figure out how to empty the buckets ourselves, cup by cup, until the bucket isn't necessary anymore. I know this is an old beater mustang, but I get the vibe this is a bucket that you've slowly and successfully emptied yourself. Be proud of that, and don't worry if you need another bucket for a while to keep catching the extra stuff.
I like hearing you, Roman. I love Mr. Regular and his cynical humor, but you (the Roman) bring a certain light-heartedness and abundant enthusiasm that I enjoy hearing. You're a good (Ro)man. Sad to see betty go, this was probably my favorite and most relatable car I've seen on this channel. My mom had a 2003 Mustang with the 3.8 V6 and bought it as a fun cruiser, it was a bad purchase descision at the time with a kid (and another planned). It was an impulse buy because she went through alot with the loss of her second child, so she felt as if maybe it could be a treat to her. She knew always that it wasn't a smart decision, but she liked it for the little it gave her. She likes to recall memories of her and my sister driving to mcdonalds on Saturday with the roof down, she felt as if it was her car and that no other car could give that same experience to her. Also, yes she did have another, more practical, car. The mustang wasnt her daily, instead her 2000 Ford Windstar was her daily driver. Which, funnily enough, had the same 3.8 V6 in it. What I've learned from this channel is that you don't need a good car to like, you need a car that is YOURS to like. I hold extreme sentimental value to every car I own or my family owns, and I partially blame this channel. But I'm grateful for that. Thanks for reading this wall of text!!
I've been a sucscriber of RCR for a long time and the weirdness is great but the RCR Stories are some of the content that really keeps me interested - the long format and the detail and inference that they go into is rare these days, not just on CZcams. I really appreciate the work that you put in to them.
RCR Stories helped me out on lots of long lonely nights driving for work. He tells them as stories, with empathy and genuine interest instead of the typical documentary style. I still remember when he explained that SAAB put air conditioning in as a safety item, because a comfortable driver is more attentive, and recently I had my car's A/C serviced, they were spot on.
Had the same thought, also, Nick, if you are reading this... you DO deserve all these good things! None of the amazing things you guys got to do would have been possible without you! ✌️

When you started going on about your childhood traumas and lack of a Father figure, it made my own personal past with my father jump right out and kick me in the nose. I never thought a new episode of RCR would be the catalyst for me seeking help on my own mental health.

Sometimes I look at a car and feel like it has a soul. But it has nothing to do with what car is it, or what state is it in. It's just the love of the owner that get's stuck to it like a warm aura around it.

The intro with the appreciation for the time you have had together, but knowing that when there are more bad days than good days, knowing where to draw the line, really spoke to me. I’m currently going through this with my senior dog. Our girl has been with us for many years and it’s absolutely crushing me knowing I’m going to have to make one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made probably very soon. It's always sad to let a car you love go but there's a special sense of closure you get when you part with it on your own terms. I felt the exact same with my dream car, a Gen-2 Toyota 4Runner. Letting go of a beloved car is difficult, but the memories and adventures a car takes you on are something that you never let go. I appreciate you Roman, stay strong brother
Damn. This hit on a lot of my own issues as well. Anxiety is something I deal with as well and I applaud you for being so open regarding your own issues as well as your support for therapy. I fall into that same "imposter" syndrome sometimes just by being a self-professed "car guy" who doesn't own an interesting car. I talked myself out of a dozen cars when I sold my Mazda3 and eventually needed to replace it - "it takes premium", "it's not reliable", "it's too big", "it's too ( ___ )". I got an old boring Fit that sounds like a sewing machine which I'll eventually give to my son. After that? Who knows. Probably something else that is logical rather than interesting. But when I remind myself that I can enjoy and appreciate cars without having to own them or know them inside and out, I feel like a better version of myself.
Hey man, nothing wrong with a Fit at all. My wife has one and it’s her second favorite car we’ve ever had, just after our old ‘89 Civic Si and just before her old ‘02 Civic Si.

I've had "car guy" cars in the past but I drive a Peugeot Partner minivan now. Why? Because it's the jack of all trades. I can road trip, I can commute, I can take it camping and sleep in the back, I can throw a kayak on the roof, I can throw half an Ikea's worth of flatpack in the back. I can get 50mpg if I baby it or well over 100mph if I'm in a rush. Heck I even took it to a car meet and didn't get laughed out of the parking lot (people were interested in the camper conversion). The only place it's no good is on a track or a quarter mile but when I had sportier cars I never took them to a track anyway. I now drive a car that's interesting because of where it takes me not interesting because of what it is
Honda Fits actually sound decent with a nice exhaust - I am speaking from experience as a owner and I love this thing. I got it lowered and put some better rims/tires on as well. It is surprisingly fun - and I used to own a CRX so I know what a fun car is :)
I'm one of the biggest "car guys" in my group despite having boring cars. I've had my mazda3 for 8 years (along with a crap box Miata.) I love my 3 because it's just such a great car to live with. Reliable, efficient, enough space for most, drives as natural as walking. "interesting" cars are cool to play with when conditions are perfect. But having a car that you don't even have to think about driving in rain, 3" of snow, or for an 860 mile trip in a day is wonderful. I hope you feel the same about your Fit now. The only way I'd get rid of my MZ3 is once my homestead really needs a truck. Until then we ball.
You do deserve all of your success. I love how earnest, up front and casually you can talk about anything and words just flow. I could listen to you talk all day. You've got an awesome voice and a down to earth personality, and as someone who also struggles with anxiety putting yourself out there like that can't be a cake walk. The amount of potential mental health has robbed from me continues to be a struggle and I seriously applaud you for still managing to put out meaningful funny and insightful content throughout it all. idk if you will see this, or if it will even mean much, but if nothing else, I could listen to you tell stories non-stop. There's something about the way you tell these stories that really puts you in such a vulnerable place that I can't help but respect you. One annoying thing about anxiety is that everyone has it. Or at least they will tell you they do. And not to diminish anyone's struggles, but this really shows the toll it can take on a person, but more than that, it shows that you can make progress. You have a bunch of fans that are cheering you on, wanting you to be happy. And don't forget that.
You deserve your successes. I found RCR about 4 years ago and it's become something I look forward to every Monday, a little highlight to break the start of week blues. Lost count of the quotes I've used, including repeated use of "MORE TRIANGLES!" from the RX-8 video. RCR stories are amazing, so much research must go into them, you deserve the success off the back of those alone.
This video really struck a chord with me today, I appreciate all of the comments about anxiety and mental health. I’m currently in a place where I’m having to realign a lot of big priorities and make big scary changes in my life, it’s incredibly scary and I’m also in a similar spot with my car. I’ve only had one car so far, almost for 10 years and it’s an 07 so already had about 65K miles when I got it. I have a lot of sentimental feelings for the car, it’s seen me through college, my first job after school, good times and bad, and it’s fun to drive on good days, but it’s been a maintenance nightmare at the same time…I also own it outright, which is largely the reason I’ve kept it…but at what cost? I totally get where you are coming from with your feelings on selling your Mustang. I’ve also struggled with anxiety and confidence. That’s funny you mentioned not feeling comfortable driving other people around, I’ve been the same way in areas I’m unfamiliar with. Thank you for the thoughtful commentary and discussion on priorities in life, your writing and ability to describe such complex feelings is incredible, I think I needed it.
Struggling with mental health myself I really connected and appreciate this video. My 03 Tahoe I grew up in and it was my first car. Its no longer my daily but I still own and drive it often, Its probably the only reason I'm still here and I still use it has an escape. It means a lot that you were able to put yourself out there.
I know you’re probs not going to see this but I do understand as I too am only just getting mental health support from non other than a 89 year old woman that does it as a charity. I learned from her that just because something is in the past and you’re not necessarily living with the problems anymore, doesn’t mean you’re still not affected by them today. Getting such wisdom and understanding from someone with so much experience has been nothing short of enlightening, I just wish I knew of her sooner, I wouldn’t be in the mess I’m in. But that’s hindsight for you. But she truly is amazing. Like you I feel like I’m finally getting somewhere after over a decade and a half of looking for help. I’m so glad you’re finally getting better, because I know how that feels after living through so much helplessness.

RCR has become my Prairie Home Companion, Car Talk, and The New Yorker all rolled into a foul mouthed and very funny adventure. I hung on to a 1998 V6 for 17 years. It had only 150 hp, 40 less than yours. Even though it was gutless, it was hard for me to let go of as well. You could step up to a 2015-17 V6, which has 300 horsepower!
Oh, Nick, just something I've found as an inefficiency in the used car market: The MN12 Thunderbirds/Cougars are really undervalued in the market. There are a bunch out there that were bought brand new as "grandpa's last car," garage kept all their lives, and have under 100k miles on them. I picked up a 1995 with the 4.6L, heavily loaded with options, 62k miles. Florida car with almost no rust last summer for $3k. And I bet you can get $2k for Betty in this market. People will give you too much money just for that Mustang badge.
I've been obsessed with cars since I was 7 years old, yet nearly all of my car choices have been practical. I came up rather poor and from a pretty eff'd up family, so the security of something reliable and comfortable was something I needed, even though my heart wanted the most impractical, loud, fast car I could get. Concentrated on my career, marriage, getting a house, getting decent savings together instead of my car fetish. Finally at 40 (53 now) I bought my first toy, a "99 C5 Corvette, FRC, manual trans. I literally had tears in my eyes driving it home. The Corvette was the culmination of all of my hard work to escape my past and inner doubts and demons. I still have it. I don't own a garage, but every year it goes into storage for the winter, and comes out in the early spring so I can drive it sparingly and enjoy every mile. At this point, for as little as I drive it (I work at home), I really can't justify keeping it, but I do. It needs little things at this point due to age, but so do I, and the fact that it can silence the b.s. in my head with a quick downshift makes it all worthwhile. No shame in getting rid of the Mustang for something more practical, it's just a stepping stone to a better life.
Roman, your authenticity is what makes this channel shine brighter than you Im sure you don’t always realize. It’s you, and moving on from your Mustang, along with your explanation behind it hit home for me and everyone who’s lucky enough to see this videos and loves cars. My mom had a 3-cylinder Autozam AZ-3 import, which my dad gave to her after she arrived to the country and got her driver's license. Since we weren't exactly well off it was basically used as the family car. A small, cheap 90s japanese coupé was used as a school run and grocery car. The boot was roomy so it was a surprisingly good hauler, certainly better than the Juke my dad would end up buying. I would sometimes sit in the driver's seat while it was stationary and pretend like I was driving it, i felt like I was the coolest guy in the world. It got totalled when a drunk driver driving a BROWN Quashquai hit it at 5am while it was street parked, one year before I got my license. So even though I never got to actually drive it. I empathize with your feelings towards your own underpowered red 90s coupé.
I couldn't sleep this morning so I ended up watching this whole video and I'll admit i likely wouldn't have otherwise. But I'm glad I did, it was well written. I think what I like most about it, though, is I think I do get a sense that you love yourself, you just don't seem to necessarily realize it. Everything of yours I've seen just makes me think you're a pretty good guy overall. Keep it up.
This is me. I can believe it. I never knew so much about you. This my car. Same feeling when getting it, same problems you’ve had, same feeling trying to let go. I love my car my v6 convertible 2004 mustang. It has had horrible break downs, it has been flooded, let me down at some times….but this car has pulled through for me so many times. Protected me from what could have been a car crash and was in tip top condition 3 days later. Shut down and then came back to life after swimming and somehow it turned back on and took me and my sister back home in the middle of a typhoon. I’ve had so many moments where I shared love, pain, relieve and joy with my friends and significant others….it hurts to have all of those, and feel like the car is just not reliable enough for me. No matter how many checks I make, how much diligent maintenance I do, how much money I pour into her. Yet when I needed her she was there. It fucking hurts. As stupid as it sounds, since high school this car has been there through every single relationship I’ve had, and has been just like one of them. I dont want to let her go. I don’t care she is not a 5.0 v8, a cobra, gt or that is not even the best looking mustang there is. I just want her to work reliably, and keep having adventures with her forever. I’m just dreaming and it hurts, because I have to move away and live frugally, and I won’t be able to give her the love she needs to even work decently. Fuck, thanks for putting this out there even if I saw it late. It feels nice like you feels not only about themselves, the same way I do, and is trying to improve the same way I do, but also feels the same way about the same car…thank you. Truly

This is the first car video that brought me to tears. Thank you. I watched because my girlfriend in college had a v6 mustang that I drove all the time. Then I my brother-in-law had one, which I drove a lot. Both just as cheap and crappy! What I didn't expect was all the feelings about my 1960's British roadster that I had thru college and grad school. I never felt I truly deserved it. It brought me so much joy and so much heartache. So many beautiful memories. So sad to see it go, when I had to grow up and face life as it was, not as I wanted it to be. But I am grateful for every moment, and the perspective it gave me. Thank you for sharing this story, and making mine feel more real, somehow.

This wasn't a video, it was more like a testimonial and documentary that showed us a side of Nick that we've never seen before and I felt a real kinship in that. Thank you, Nick.
I wouldnt say there is really any correct way to be a Man, I had my Father growing up and while I do respect him for that I'd say from it I learned more of the Man I didn't want to be and more of the Human I wanted to be which I'd say is far far more important. I'd say you are a brave and talented person, you have the guts to admit you aren't OK which is perhaps one of the bravest things we can do and through your skill you've given us hours of joy and intresting incites into days past, I do genuinely wish you find hapiness and peace and hopefully threapy will help you get to where you need to be.
Its very humanizing when youtube content creators give us a genuine look into their lives and tell us about themselves. Anxiety and self doubting is a hugh cross to bear . I chose the former, because fixing, maintaining and restoring things is intuitive and brings me a deep joy. You've made your choice, but the option is still there. You just have to ask yourself-in twenty years, will you say "I should have kept that"?

I had a 2001 v6 as my first Mustang, and I’ve had 2 other v6 SN95s since (currently dailying a 94 convertible) and while a lot of Roman’s points about repairs, little annoyances and quirks with the car that build up a sense of anxiety about it ring very true…there is an undeniable charm about these very plain budget level cars. I’ve had Mustang’s much much faster such as a 2014 GT that I also currently own, but there’s something about the barebones simplicity, budget quality and mundaneness that is sort of endearing about them…and while it sucks that you’re going to be saying goodbye to it, I can see how much you loved it for what it was, even if it’s nothing in the eyes of most other people, and with that, I sympathize

Around the time when you bought your sn95 candy red v6, there was another sn95 candy red v6 but it was 'the perfect sibling' variant. It was my first car, bought it for $3,700 with 174k miles. The car looked identical to yours except it was a manual and the interior was near perfect. The prior owner had it since 10k miles and took really good care. Hearing your story makes me appreciate and cherish what I had. My car had no tears inside what so ever, everything worked like it should. During the 20k miles of my ownership, the only thing that went wrong was the coil pack. Hearing your story made me realize that I had taken my car's perfection for granted. Thank you sharing your experience with Betty. Eight cars later I miss my first car and feel guilty for never giving it a nickname. I hope the criminology sudent that bought it from me for $2,000 gave it a good nickname. His dad drove him to see the car in a silver diesel VW Beetle. Gosh, all of these memories are coming back.

Just wanted to say, I could appreciate so much of what you discussed. I love your writing and want you to know that you are special. Not many of us can write so introspectively. Good luck on your next vehicle. But remember to get something that's not only practical, but has character. My most memorable cars were a Dodge Challenger SRT for obvious reasons and my first new car. A Ford (via Kia) Festiva. I can definitely understand Roman's feeling for the Stang. I had to get rid of my first car 3 years ago it was a 02 Camaro and a V6 at that. It wasn't the fastest or even the nicest car but it was mine. I loved it even through all the problems it had but it got to the point where fixing it over and over again cost more than the car was worth. I'll always have those memories but there's a time and place for things and its time had passed. To Roman's mental health and his self worth on being a creator on CZcams, only you know when you aren't ok and the first step to fixing a problem is addressing the problem. If therapy and medicines help you with your mental health then great, you know what works for you. You're a good writer Nick, don't take the credit away when you are given the opportunities to travel and meet new people because of it. you're awesome Nick and we love all you do for RCR.
My wife has a 2004 Mustang just like this one. V6 automatic. She bought it brand new, and it is the only car she's ever owned. She stresses about the possibility of having to buy a newer car in the future with all of their gizmos and touchscreens. Her car really is a modern antique. A simplistic tool in a sea of modernity. This video really hit me in some place i cant describe very well. I can relate a lot to the reasons for getting rid of a beloved car. My first car, an 06 scion, was recently sold because it was an accumulation of so many different problems that bugged me. It took me from junior year of high school to senior of college, and it became really a part of me and who I was. I did so much in that car, from college visits to late night gigs. Despite how simple its construction was (something i really do miss now), no garage as a college kid meant maintenance became so much more difficult. I loved my car. I loved how pleasing the shape was, how predictable the handling was, even if it was really loud on the inside at times. The trim pieces were appealing and the orange on silver was so 2005. But since it was a salvage, it had left me stranded on an occasion because the bolts on an axle rusted out and snapped. I had to adjust the heating manually, using a hose mounted to the valve that controls how much heat mixes with the AC since every electrical accessory had copious corrosion. the AC always blew cold but was starting to act up (the compressor had already been replaced at one point) with constant leaks, and the once astounding fuel economy withered. it was a lot that happened at once, with unknown things to replace down the line, and since it was an ergonomic nightmare (im 6' 3", my knees were always bent and rubbing against the trim since day 1) i made the choice to sell it and get a 2013 nissan instead. though i really really enjoy my new car (just praying that the cvt stays good for another few years) it cant truly replace my scion, since the scion helped me through some realllllly shitty times living with my folks. drove to clear my head, drove to make the rounds at thrift stores, squeeze every last buddy (we got 7 in there one time) in the 2 door hatchback to go get some burgers. it was really a superhero in that regard. but like all things, it was not permanent, and at the end of the day was just a car.
I don't comment much on videos. But as someone who struggles with some of the same issues, I want to let you know that you do a great job. You're an excellent writer and I'm glad you found this medium. You deserve all the praise you're getting from other commenters. RCR is great and you're a big part of that success. Thanks for sharing your story with us. In a b5 s4 video, you guys said something along the lines of “No one realizes their full potential without hitting every bump in the road to get there. Even reaching the summit is just coming to the realization that potential is exactly that. Potential. That’s the best possible version you can be, simply by not trying to be more than what is.” And that really resonated with me at such a difficult time I was going through. Social media and this new world we all live in created a false perception and dissociation with reality, and some days hit harder than other days, but living in the here and now rather than focusing on where we want to be is important because who’s to say you won’t feel the same when you get there. And look at how far you guys have come. Creative writing, entertainment, and funny metaphors that make us all remember that we’re all stuck on the same page. People who feel attachment to cars is a good thing. We’re all in a new rat race now and forcing ourselves to rush everything. & to move on is to grow too. Thank you both RCR

@@nts3208 Yeah, there are plenty of therapists who will work on an income sliding scale. Mine does, and it took me maybe one or two months to get in after my intake appointment. Seems like a lot when you’re at your lowest and you’re utterly desperate, I know, but if you can hang in there, you can find someone. Look around and get the help you need, you don’t have to live like this.

As someone with an advanced creative degree and the decades of debt and near poverty that follow, I understand where you're at now. As someone further along I can say the edges smooth out and normal attainable goods like appliance transportation and hobby transportation can co-exist. Until then, thanks for reminding me that what I felt and went through wasn't mine alone. Nobody gets what they deserve but everyone gets what they get. If you can figure out how to think less about it, that energy can go toward getting more. Its not easy but this seems like the right way to start.

Well put, I myself have learned much about being content with what I got. Love my 08 Toyota Solara and while I have 69 mustang fastack near finished, I wish I still had my old 65 coupe that was my first. Because of life and family sold it for a dad van. I’m good now but I’ll always feel for the ones I let go for reasons despite wanting to keep it. Hope all car guy drams come true.

I'm still listening to the whole video, but just wanted to say - Roman, you're an AWESOME writer because you can translate really complicated feelings into words so perfectly. Take time for yourself and allow yourself to celebrate your wins - you deserve them!
I think some items become unintentional buckets for our emotional weight - we dump the feelings and problems we haven't or can't yet process. Some people keep dumping those buckets into new buckets, hoping the next one has enough holes to drain the problems for us. Others try to dump the buckets, only to watch them fill again with new problems or requiring newer, bigger buckets.
Some of us eventually figure out how to empty the buckets ourselves, cup by cup, until the bucket isn't necessary anymore. I know this is an old beater mustang, but I get the vibe this is a bucket that you've slowly and successfully emptied yourself. Be proud of that, and don't worry if you need another bucket for a while to keep catching the extra stuff.

Sad to see betty go, this was probably my favorite and most relatable car I've seen on this channel. My mom had a 2003 Mustang with the 3.8 V6 and bought it as a fun cruiser, it was a bad purchase descision at the time with a kid (and another planned). It was an impulse buy because she went through alot with the loss of her second child, so she felt as if maybe it could be a treat to her. She knew always that it wasn't a smart decision, but she liked it for the little it gave her. She likes to recall memories of her and my sister driving to mcdonalds on Saturday with the roof down, she felt as if it was her car and that no other car could give that same experience to her. Also, yes she did have another, more practical, car. The mustang wasnt her daily, instead her 2000 Ford Windstar was her daily driver. Which, funnily enough, had the same 3.8 V6 in it. What I've learned from this channel is that you don't need a good car to like, you need a car that is YOURS to like. I hold extreme sentimental value to every car I own or my family owns, and I partially blame this channel. But I'm grateful for that. Thanks for reading this wall of text!!

I've been a sucscriber of RCR for a long time and the weirdness is great but the RCR Stories are some of the content that really keeps me interested - the long format and the detail and inference that they go into is rare these days, not just on CZcams. I really appreciate the work that you put in to them.
RCR Stories helped me out on lots of long lonely nights driving for work. He tells them as stories, with empathy and genuine interest instead of the typical documentary style. I still remember when he explained that SAAB put air conditioning in as a safety item, because a comfortable driver is more attentive, and recently I had my car's A/C serviced, they were spot on.
Just give it to your nephew. It has sentimental value and might even get him to learn how to fix cars.
Had the same thought, also, Nick, if you are reading this... you DO deserve all these good things! None of the amazing things you guys got to do would have been possible without you! ✌️

It's always sad to let a car you love go but there's a special sense of closure you get when you part with it on your own terms. I felt the exact same with my dream car, a Gen-2 Toyota 4Runner. Damn. This hit on a lot of my own issues as well. Anxiety is something I deal with as well and I applaud you for being so open regarding your own issues as well as your support for therapy.
I fall into that same "imposter" syndrome sometimes just by being a self-professed "car guy" who doesn't own an interesting car. I talked myself out of a dozen cars when I sold my Mazda3 and eventually needed to replace it - "it takes premium", "it's not reliable", "it's too big", "it's too ( ___ )". I got an old boring Fit that sounds like a sewing machine which I'll eventually give to my son. After that? Who knows. Probably something else that is logical rather than interesting. But when I remind myself that I can enjoy and appreciate cars without having to own them or know them inside and out, I feel like a better version of myself.
Hey man, nothing wrong with a Fit at all. My wife has one and it’s her second favorite car we’ve ever had, just after our old ‘89 Civic Si and just before her old ‘02 Civic Si.

I've had "car guy" cars in the past but I drive a Peugeot Partner minivan now. Why? Because it's the jack of all trades. I can road trip, I can commute, I can take it camping and sleep in the back, I can throw a kayak on the roof, I can throw half an Ikea's worth of flatpack in the back. I can get 50mpg if I baby it or well over 100mph if I'm in a rush. Heck I even took it to a car meet and didn't get laughed out of the parking lot (people were interested in the camper conversion). The only place it's no good is on a track or a quarter mile but when I had sportier cars I never took them to a track anyway. I now drive a car that's interesting because of where it takes me not interesting because of what it is
Honda Fits actually sound decent with a nice exhaust - I am speaking from experience as a owner and I love this thing. I got it lowered and put some better rims/tires on as well. It is surprisingly fun - and I used to own a CRX so I know what a fun car is :)
I'm one of the biggest "car guys" in my group despite having boring cars. I've had my mazda3 for 8 years (along with a crap box Miata.) I love my 3 because it's just such a great car to live with. Reliable, efficient, enough space for most, drives as natural as walking. "interesting" cars are cool to play with when conditions are perfect. But having a car that you don't even have to think about driving in rain, 3" of snow, or for an 860 mile trip in a day is wonderful. I hope you feel the same about your Fit now.
The only way I'd get rid of my MZ3 is once my homestead really needs a truck. Until then we ball.
You do deserve all of your success. I love how earnest, up front and casually you can talk about anything and words just flow. I could listen to you talk all day. You've got an awesome voice and a down to earth personality, and as someone who also struggles with anxiety putting yourself out there like that can't be a cake walk. The amount of potential mental health has robbed from me continues to be a struggle and I seriously applaud you for still managing to put out meaningful funny and insightful content throughout it all. idk if you will see this, or if it will even mean much, but if nothing else, I could listen to you tell stories non-stop. There's something about the way you tell these stories that really puts you in such a vulnerable place that I can't help but respect you. One annoying thing about anxiety is that everyone has it. Or at least they will tell you they do. And not to diminish anyone's struggles, but this really shows the toll it can take on a person, but more than that, it shows that you can make progress. You have a bunch of fans that are cheering you on, wanting you to be happy. And don't forget that.

You deserve your successes. I found RCR about 4 years ago and it's become something I look forward to every Monday, a little highlight to break the start of week blues. Lost count of the quotes I've used, including repeated use of "MORE TRIANGLES!" from the RX-8 video. RCR stories are amazing, so much research must go into them, you deserve the success off the back of those alone.
This video really struck a chord with me today, I appreciate all of the comments about anxiety and mental health. I’m currently in a place where I’m having to realign a lot of big priorities and make big scary changes in my life, it’s incredibly scary and I’m also in a similar spot with my car. I’ve only had one car so far, almost for 10 years and it’s an 07 so already had about 65K miles when I got it. I have a lot of sentimental feelings for the car, it’s seen me through college, my first job after school, good times and bad, and it’s fun to drive on good days, but it’s been a maintenance nightmare at the same time…I also own it outright, which is largely the reason I’ve kept it…but at what cost? I totally get where you are coming from with your feelings on selling your Mustang. I’ve also struggled with anxiety and confidence. That’s funny you mentioned not feeling comfortable driving other people around, I’ve been the same way in areas I’m unfamiliar with. Thank you for the thoughtful commentary and discussion on priorities in life, your writing and ability to describe such complex feelings is incredible, I think I needed it.
Struggling with mental health myself I really connected and appreciate this video. My 03 Tahoe I grew up in and it was my first car. Its no longer my daily but I still own and drive it often, Its probably the only reason I'm still here and I still use it has an escape. It means a lot that you were able to put yourself out there.
I know you’re probs not going to see this but I do understand as I too am only just getting mental health support from non other than a 89 year old woman that does it as a charity.
I learned from her that just because something is in the past and you’re not necessarily living with the problems anymore, doesn’t mean you’re still not affected by them today.
Getting such wisdom and understanding from someone with so much experience has been nothing short of enlightening, I just wish I knew of her sooner, I wouldn’t be in the mess I’m in. But that’s hindsight for you. But she truly is amazing.
Like you I feel like I’m finally getting somewhere after over a decade and a half of looking for help.

I might not watch rcr stories when they first come out, but summertime, rainfall, working in the garage and a Bluetooth speaker. That’s when rcr stories are the best background, light listening stuff out there. I appreciate them.
I don't care about 99% of the cars on RCR, I come here for the writing and the sense of love for the craft. RCR has become my Prairie Home Companion, Car Talk, and The New Yorker all rolled into a foul mouthed and very funny adventure. Keep up the good work, RCR and the deep dives have some of the best writing on the web.
I lost my father at 16 (I just turned 30 this month) so I know what you mean when you talk about your Dad. Life is hard when you don't get to know your Dad and lack that father figure. Stay strong brother 💓

I hung on to a 1998 V6 for 17 years. It had only 150 hp, 40 less than yours. Even though it was gutless, it was hard for me to let go of as well. You could step up to a 2015-17 V6, which has 300 horsepower!
Oh, Nick, just something I've found as an inefficiency in the used car market: The MN12 Thunderbirds/Cougars are really undervalued in the market. There are a bunch out there that were bought brand new as "grandpa's last car," garage kept all their lives, and have under 100k miles on them. I picked up a 1995 with the 4.6L, heavily loaded with options, 62k miles. Florida car with almost no rust last summer for $3k.
And I bet you can get $2k for Betty in this market. People will give you too much money just for that Mustang badge.
I've been obsessed with cars since I was 7 years old, yet nearly all of my car choices have been practical. I came up rather poor and from a pretty eff'd up family, so the security of something reliable and comfortable was something I needed, even though my heart wanted the most impractical, loud, fast car I could get. Concentrated on my career, marriage, getting a house, getting decent savings together instead of my car fetish. Finally at 40 (53 now) I bought my first toy, a "99 C5 Corvette, FRC, manual trans. I literally had tears in my eyes driving it home. The Corvette was the culmination of all of my hard work to escape my past and inner doubts and demons. I still have it. I don't own a garage, but every year it goes into storage for the winter, and comes out in the early spring so I can drive it sparingly and enjoy every mile. At this point, for as little as I drive it (I work at home), I really can't justify keeping it, but I do. It needs little things at this point due to age, but so do I, and the fact that it can silence the b.s. in my head with a quick downshift makes it all worthwhile. No shame in getting rid of the Mustang for something more practical, it's just a stepping stone to a better life.
You guys are terrific writers. And skilled entertainers. Appreciate the well-deserved accolades. Nice job.

My mom had a 3-cylinder Autozam AZ-3 import, which my dad gave to her after she arrived to the country and got her driver's license. Since we weren't exactly well off it was basically used as the family car. A small, cheap 90s japanese coupé was used as a school run and grocery car. The boot was roomy so it was a surprisingly good hauler, certainly better than the Juke my dad would end up buying. I would sometimes sit in the driver's seat while it was stationary and pretend like I was driving it, i felt like I was the coolest guy in the world. It got totalled when a drunk driver driving a BROWN Quashquai hit it at 5am while it was street parked, one year before I got my license. So even though I never got to actually drive it. I empathize with your feelings towards your own underpowered red 90s coupé.
I couldn't sleep this morning so I ended up watching this whole video and I'll admit i likely wouldn't have otherwise. But I'm glad I did, it was well written. I think what I like most about it, though, is I think I do get a sense that you love yourself, you just don't seem to necessarily realize it. Everything of yours I've seen just makes me think you're a pretty good guy overall. Keep it up.
This is me. I can believe it. I never knew so much about you. This my car. Same feeling when getting it, same problems you’ve had, same feeling trying to let go. I love my car my v6 convertible 2004 mustang. It has had horrible break downs, it has been flooded, let me down at some times….but this car has pulled through for me so many times. Protected me from what could have been a car crash and was in tip top condition 3 days later. Shut down and then came back to life after swimming and somehow it turned back on and took me and my sister back home in the middle of a typhoon. I’ve had so many moments where I shared love, pain, relieve and joy with my friends and significant others….it hurts to have all of those, and feel like the car is just not reliable enough for me. No matter how many checks I make, how much diligent maintenance I do, how much money I pour into her. Yet when I needed her she was there. It fucking hurts. As stupid as it sounds, since high school this car has been there through every single relationship I’ve had, and has been just like one of them. I dont want to let her go. I don’t care she is not a 5.0 v8, a cobra, gt or that is not even the best looking mustang there is. I just want her to work reliably, and keep having adventures with her forever. I’m just dreaming and it hurts, because I have to move away and live frugally, and I won’t be able to give her the love she needs to even work decently. Fuck, thanks for putting this out there even if I saw it late. It feels nice like you feels not only about themselves, the same way I do, and is trying to improve the same way I do, but also feels the same way about the same car…thank you. Truly

This is the first car video that brought me to tears. Thank you. I watched because my girlfriend in college had a v6 mustang that I drove all the time. Then I my brother-in-law had one, which I drove a lot. Both just as cheap and crappy!
What I didn't expect was all the feelings about my 1960's British roadster that I had thru college and grad school. I never felt I truly deserved it. It brought me so much joy and so much heartache. So many beautiful memories. So sad to see it go, when I had to grow up and face life as it was, not as I wanted it to be. But I am grateful for every moment, and the perspective it gave me.

I wouldnt say there is really any correct way to be a Man, I had my Father growing up and while I do respect him for that I'd say from it I learned more of the Man I didn't want to be and more of the Human I wanted to be which I'd say is far far more important.
I'd say you are a brave and talented person, you have the guts to admit you aren't OK which is perhaps one of the bravest things we can do and through your skill you've given us hours of joy and intresting incites into days past, I do genuinely wish you find hapiness and peace and hopefully threapy will help you get to where you need to be.

I had a 2001 v6 as my first Mustang, and I’ve had 2 other v6 SN95s since (currently dailying a 94 convertible) and while a lot of Roman’s points about repairs, little annoyances and quirks with the car that build up a sense of anxiety about it ring very true…there is an undeniable charm about these very plain budget level cars. I’ve had Mustang’s much much faster such as a 2014 GT that I also currently own, but there’s something about the barebones simplicity, budget quality and mundaneness that is sort of endearing about them…and while it sucks that you’re going to be saying goodbye to it, I can see how much you loved it for what it was, even if it’s nothing in the eyes of most other people, and with that, I sympathize

Around the time when you bought your sn95 candy red v6, there was another sn95 candy red v6 but it was 'the perfect sibling' variant. It was my first car, bought it for $3,700 with 174k miles. The car looked identical to yours except it was a manual and the interior was near perfect. The prior owner had it since 10k miles and took really good care. Hearing your story makes me appreciate and cherish what I had. My car had no tears inside what so ever, everything worked like it should. During the 20k miles of my ownership, the only thing that went wrong was the coil pack. Hearing your story made me realize that I had taken my car's perfection for granted. Thank you sharing your experience with Betty. Eight cars later I miss my first car and feel guilty for never giving it a nickname. I hope the criminology sudent that bought it from me for $2,000 gave it a good nickname. His dad drove him to see the car in a silver diesel VW Beetle. Gosh, all of these memories are coming back.

Just wanted to say, I could appreciate so much of what you discussed. I love your writing and want you to know that you are special. Not many of us can write so introspectively. Good luck on your next vehicle. But remember to get something that's not only practical, but has character. My most memorable cars were a Dodge Challenger SRT for obvious reasons and my first new car. A Ford (via Kia) Festiva. The latter was so slow it had to be driven like a madman all the time to keep up with traffic. Keep doing what you are doing and remember we appreciate you. From another Boricua.

I can definitely understand Roman's feeling for the Stang. I had to get rid of my first car 3 years ago it was a 02 Camaro and a V6 at that. It wasn't the fastest or even the nicest car but it was mine. I loved it even through all the problems it had but it got to the point where fixing it over and over again cost more than the car was worth. I'll always have those memories but there's a time and place for things and its time had passed. To Roman's mental health and his self worth on being a creator on CZcams, only you know when you aren't ok and the first step to fixing a problem is addressing the problem. If therapy and medicines help you with your mental health then great, you know what works for you. You're a good writer Nick, don't take the credit away when you are given the opportunities to travel and meet new people because of it.

My wife has a 2004 Mustang just like this one. V6 automatic. She bought it brand new, and it is the only car she's ever owned. She stresses about the possibility of having to buy a newer car in the future with all of their gizmos and touchscreens. Her car really is a modern antique. A simplistic tool in a sea of modernity. This video really hit me in some place i cant describe very well. I can relate a lot to the reasons for getting rid of a beloved car. My first car, an 06 scion, was recently sold because it was an accumulation of so many different problems that bugged me. It took me from junior year of high school to senior of college, and it became really a part of me and who I was. I did so much in that car, from college visits to late night gigs. Despite how simple its construction was (something i really do miss now), no garage as a college kid meant maintenance became so much more difficult. I loved my car. I loved how pleasing the shape was, how predictable the handling was, even if it was really loud on the inside at times. The trim pieces were appealing and the orange on silver was so 2005. But since it was a salvage, it had left me stranded on an occasion because the bolts on an axle rusted out and snapped. I had to adjust the heating manually, using a hose mounted to the valve that controls how much heat mixes with the AC since every electrical accessory had copious corrosion. the AC always blew cold but was starting to act up (the compressor had already been replaced at one point) with constant leaks, and the once astounding fuel economy withered. it was a lot that happened at once, with unknown things to replace down the line, and since it was an ergonomic nightmare (im 6' 3", my knees were always bent and rubbing against the trim since day 1) i made the choice to sell it and get a 2013 nissan instead. though i really really enjoy my new car (just praying that the cvt stays good for another few years) it cant truly replace my scion, since the scion helped me through some realllllly shitty times living with my folks. drove to clear my head, drove to make the rounds at thrift stores, squeeze every last buddy (we got 7 in there one time) in the 2 door hatchback to go get some burgers. it was really a superhero in that regard. but like all things, it was not permanent, and at the end of the day was just a car.
I don't comment much on videos. But as someone who struggles with some of the same issues, I want to let you know that you do a great job. You're an excellent writer and I'm glad you found this medium. You deserve all the praise you're getting from other commenters. RCR is great and you're a big part of that success. Thanks for sharing your story with us. In a b5 s4 video, you guys said something along the lines of “No one realizes their full potential without hitting every bump in the road to get there. Even reaching the summit is just coming to the realization that potential is exactly that. Potential. That’s the best possible version you can be, simply by not trying to be more than what is.” And that really resonated with me at such a difficult time I was going through. Social media and this new world we all live in created a false perception and dissociation with reality, and some days hit harder than other days, but living in the here and now rather than focusing on where we want to be is important because who’s to say you won’t feel the same when you get there. And look at how far you guys have come. Creative writing, entertainment, and funny metaphors that make us all remember that we’re all stuck on the same page. People who feel attachment to cars is a good thing. We’re all in a new rat race now and forcing ourselves to rush everything. & to move on is to grow too. Thank you both RCR
