had he won, he would have become the oldest world champion (at the moment of winning the title) in over half a century (Botvinnik being older back in 1961, and it was possible because Tal was ill).

these truths are not mutually exclusive
it's not always the universally stronger player that wins a match - eg. with all due respect to Kramnik, he wasn't a player of greater calibre than Kasparov when he defeated him in 2000

and you're telling me that in 2000 - when he was rated 75 points higher than the world's #2 (for reference, that's a larger rating gap than there is between Carlsen and #6 right now)... having won Wijk aan Zee Corus with a score of 9.5/13 and not a single loss... etc. etc. - he "wasn't in his prime"??
i'm not sure how to sum it up. that's certainly an interesting way of looking at things
