      Learn Organic Gardening at GrowingYourGreens I recently tried the Nature's Care, and I definitely wasn't impressed. However, the batch that I had gotten had plenty of Perlite. Either way, that soil holds moisture for so long (Florida) that algae grows on the surface. And after watering for the first time, the surface looks like all shredded wood. (Edit1) To be fair to that product, I wasn't aware of the difference between "potting mix" and "garden soil".
      (Edit2) I gave EcoScraps a try this go around, before finding the bad reviews. It had food labels, drinking straws, and some other misc. trash in it. It makes sense, being that the stuff is reclaimed from landfills. However, I can't see how they get away with being Certified Organic. Also, the material didn't seem to be fully composted, looked more brown when dried. It had a bit of an off odor, though were old bags on clearance outside.

    @asiaroper8332 Před 3 lety +5

    When looking for a organic soil:
    1. Dont instantly think organic means good/healthy
    2. Look for something like *OMRI listed for organic use* on the bag. This means its an organic certified material for use to produce organic food ONLY then can you really call ur food organic.
    3. The OMRI listed - Organic Material Review Institute - has products that are allowed and not allowed by the NOP which is the national organic program. Things like sewage sludge or biosolids are not allowed by under OMRI or the organic program
    4. If ur bag just says organic it can contain it may contain sewage sludge and biosolids.
    5. In the ingredients it could have compost listed, this could be good or bad. Compost could mean composted sewage sludge or anything like it. If they dont specify what the compost is made of, that could be a bad sign. A good example of a specification of compost is yard trimmings and food scrapes.
    6. Have a screen to break down big chunks of soil and to catch debre like plastic, glass or wood.
    7. Smell the soil.It should just smell like dirt.
    8. Do a pot test.
    9. Recommeded-make a soil mixture
    Soil would buy again: EcoScrapes, Magic dirt. Would mix 1 bag of the EcoScrapes and 1 bag of the Magic Dirt. Or the Pea moss and Virmiculite.

    John, as an FYI I bought several bags of the Just Natural organoc potting mix with worm castings to start a bunch of seeds in and it did a bang up job. My only issue was that I found small rocks in every bag which is a cheap trick to boost the weight the bags. In addition, i found a large metal nail in one bag. Not exactly what i was hoping to find. That being said. The plants i started in this soil are doing amazing and big props to the company because when i contacted them about my issue they actually responded and took the compaint to the plant manager and discussed it in a staff meeting. They really do care and eant to make a quality poduct.

    I love your content, seriously top-notch!! With that said I have a couple recommendations that can Improve your videos. These are general tips not specifically for this video. I usually skip your videos if they are longer than 20-30 minutes just because I don't always have that much time. 10-20 minutes is probably perfect especially to get more people watching your videos. You could probably reduce the video length if you cut out any unnecessary rambling or other parts that have a 2-3 pause. Cutting all that out can take a little work but will usually shorten the video quite a bit. Only other recommendation is to try and keep each subtopic to a specific duration of time. The best thing you can do for long video (30 min+) is included timestamps in the description and mention those timestamps at the beginning of the video. Again, thanks for all the great/free content. Keep it up!!

    The soils they sell are great if you want fungus gnats. They might be ok for use outside. Used some of them inside... house was filled with fungus gnats in a few weeks. Now using all organic. Have a worm farm for compost. Been mixing worm castings and make my own fertilizer from organic alfalfa and kelp and other stuff. Added my compost and natural fertilizers.. took a year... but now no more fungus gnats. After going organic... not one fungus gnat in my house. :) Plus I put a few red wiggler worms in all pots. Turn under dead leaves under the top of soil. It works for me. No more sticky fly strips to catch fungus gnats.

    Let's do some more math, John (and maybe you did, and I hadn't seen that part yet.) I like to convert the costs per liter/gallon/foot or whatever the measure is on the bag to cost per cubic yard. The "Just Natural" 2 cubic feet bag that was purchased in the video for $3 works out to a very nice $40/ cubic yard. My local landscape supply yard sells its best organic, non- GMO veggie mix for around $50 a yard. It would take just under 306 bags of Dr. Earth to make a cubic yard. At $6/2.5 litres, that's $1,835 a cubic yard!!! I am sure the Dr. Earth is good stuff, and I realize that most people may not have the option to go get a large quantity (my landscape supply place will let you buy by the 5 gallon bucket if you want) but I'd rather build my own soil than pay that price. The bagged dirt biz must be pretty profitable, except at tend of season!!! Happy gardening all!

    The way that works for me is in short if worms can live in it than i try it on unessential plants in a pot. If the plant grows well, than i can use it on the garden. I have found much as you have that stuff that wont burn is bioavailable and give the plants what they need. Azomite micronized, biochar, worm castings, humic/fulvic acid, coir for soil amendment and starting seeds, gypsum to break up clay soils and epsom salts for trace minerals.

    If you make it to Pittsburgh this year, it'd be great if you do a story on PittMoss! Peat Moss ought to stay in the land as it sequesters carbon. And PittMoss is supposed to retain 47% more moisture than Peat and provide 13% more aeration. We can use more sound eco-products!

    A lot of good points here, especially the one about not knowing the exact contents of the bags. I think it's MUCH better to just buy black dirt by the truck load. Here it's $16 a yard. I can assume the soil is fairly depleted, and amend as needed. To get it home, I use a pickup. You can rent them for $20 a day at Menards, I think. Line the tarp with a large tarp, especially the tailgate area - dirt gets in the crack.

    Forest products includes the inner wood of a tree mulched up. It breaks down quickly and is considered a cheap ingredient. One of the mixes says pine bark -I would consider that a plus in a potting mix or even as an additive to soil. You do need a source of nitrogen as well.

    Thanks for your help. I went to the omri website and searched for the different soils I've used to plant for the first time a garden. It looks like I lucked out and everything is truly organic, omri certified for organic use. I thought I was going to have to yank all the plants out of what I had and find something truly organic but I can leave them where they are thankfully.
    Two of my plantings have a lot of sticks and other large items but what I'm going to do is after I grow my cabbage in it I'm going to sift it through hardware cloth and keep it and use it in a raised garden bed and toss out the large pieces.

    This year I have tried different container soils for my patio garden : Magic Dirt, Just Natural Organic Potting Mix, Miracle Grow, and Miracle Grow Performance (comes in a black bag with yellow lettering). So far my plants seem happiest in the Magic Dirt, Just Natural, and Miracle Grow Performance. The Magic Dirt was super clumpy though, I’m surprised its doing so good. It really felt so cruddy coming out of the bag but today theres 2 big corn stalks, zucchini & sunflowers growing great in it.

    I'm not sure how much peat goes into compost, but I am a Scotch drinker. Some Scotches have peat smoke infused into them, and distilleries have been doing this for hundreds of years. Even these distilleries who burn peat purely for floating whiskey cannot use the peat fast enough for it to not grow back. It grows faster than it is used.

If I don't want to wait in a big line and use their self checkout lane I want a 5-10% discount for checking myself out. Pretty soon walmart will want customers to help unload the truck and stock the shelves. Walmart blows.

    John, I'm just starting to watch this video, but "Just Naturals" is a GREAT potting soil. I used it to pot up my hydroponic Kratky method lemon from seed, and had seamless growth this past spring. My tree is still very healthy and all I've used as supplemental fertilizers is Alaska fish emulsion and at the end of the season some citrus and avocado fertilizer. All great products. Enjoy!

    Something else to watch for is what is known as tph water which is sold to or even paid to dispose of. It is a by product of the refining process of oil. It is water that holds high quantities of hydrogen sulphide as well as volitile organic compounds and is used to feed the microbes and worms of a massive system of ponds then spread on piles of waste......
    Definitely don't just read the labels research the companies and the way they produce the compost and mulch.
    Google Brooks holdings in Australia and you will see an example. Goodness knows what else they accept and then on well as soil improvements

  • @lockwoan01

    I'll be honest - I buy my potting soil/compost wherever I can find it, depending on the price, and if I'm willing to try the stuff. That being said, I know one thing that can help - dump the different bags into a wheelbarrow and mix the contents. I actually did that for my one raised bed garden (my March videos even show footage of what I have) - 4 bags of manure, 4 of compost, 4 of potting soil, 4 of garden soil, and 2 of vermiculite - easily 5-600 pounds of stuff. Got some good squash out of it.

    • @lockwoan01
      @lockwoan01 Před 6 lety +7

      I don't know. Clearly not enough to kill me, given that I'm sending a reply to you. Odds are, not as much as I might have if I'd eaten squash grown by big businesses, who dump pesticides on theirs, although I'm hearing conflicting reports about that, as apparently most growers don't use any during a certain time-frame prior to harvest, to prevent accidental poisoning. (Only real con I've heard is that commercially grown squash lacks flavor.)
      You tell me - how much poison have you ingested from eating things grown in your garden? Are you sure your soil/compost is 100% pesticide/herbicide free? I know I didn't use any on my garden. Did you? Did you brave the pests? I know I did, and I got to enjoy some very lovely ladybugs, who were happy to find a feast of the pests.

      I do the same Andrew. If you go to Lowes early in the morning, they have the repaired bags of soil that were ripped the day before. Many of these sell for 50% off with only a little material missing. It's a good way to build your soil up without getting ripped off.

      Andrew Lockwood YES! A man after my own heart, hahaha , someone else who partakes in the fun practice of bio-alchemy when it comes to making the perfect garden soil . I’ve ALWAYS enjoyed mixing up concoctions with my arsenal of organic soils/amendments/compost variants /miscellaneous mix-ins , most of the time I come up roses , pun intended , ha ! ... One of the finest quotes /facts about gardening which can be encouraging OR discouraging -but , that’s that “gardening is 100% trial and error “ , and now that I’m currently horticulture student, I noticed one major constant my professor stresses in Just about every lecture, it’s similar to first one and also handy to remember , even Though it can be enraging tehee , and that’s Is : “ there are NO absolutes in horticulture “. Ahhhhh yes, and what a beautiful crapshoot it is ;) no ?
