    I dump mine in a wheelbarrow and mix Apx 50/50 of my compost. Plants love it!

    Love the name, I had to go over to MacBeth's YT channel to figure out what Bravo 6 was. Overall, this is has been a very educating evening, LOL. I dig the channel - quick and worthwhile. Fertilizer in the hands. Yup, bucket grower, guilty as charged. I should get a scooper. I'm top-layering my old soil with compost, biochar and gaia's basalt rock dust which smells surprisingly good for a soil supplement. I can't recommend it just yet, but it I'm stoked to try it out.

    Another option is to just dump the soil into your beds after the season. I've done this for years.

      That's what I usually do, but with starting 12 dozen seeds and up potting many to spend the season in my greenhouse, it gets expensive each year. I've spent over $200 this year just for fresh seed starting and up potting mix supplies.

      @@MoonMan1956 I spent $2000, but I'm a market farmer, haha. As of last weekend I've already broke even and I'm sitting on 500 pounds of broccoli at the moment. Praying a restaurant takes it.

    I add some new soil, plus compost, and then I use a 3 inch auger bit on my cordless drill to mix everything up. I'll definitely try adding that granular organic fertilizer, too. Thanks for the tips!👍👍

      Nice. Even something like "dynamic lifter" (pelletized chicken manure) is great to make sure there's enough nutrition in there.
      I tend to go for 2 parts old potting mix, 1 part compost, 1 part coco coir or peat moss, and a few additives. Cheers!

    Seems like you would want to dump all the contents of the pot into a wheelbarrow to get all the old potting soil refreshed. Just on top would leach down there but you would still have old, tough used up soil on the bottom.

    Add some kitchen scraps and organic matter throughout the fall/winter, along with red wigglers. Keeping adequate moisture. Leaves a good soil for this season.

    To avoid viruses, Nematodes, etc., when re-using potting mixes, I put it in a 5 gallon bucket with tiny weep holes in the bottom. Then I pour in about 2 gallons of boiling water. After draining for a few hours, spread it out on a plastic sheet to dry.

    Thanks, Nick. I like that you get right to the point and explain it in a few minutes. I've watched videos where the host takes 20 minutes to show similar. Should we assume you have already removed any large roots from the pots from the year before and have loosened up the potting soil? Also, probably just a mistake as you were filming, but Perlite is not volcanic rock. That is vermiculite.

    • @mamajan99
      @mamajan99 Před 3 měsíci

      Perlite is indeed an amorphous volcanic glass. I avoid breathing the irritating dust when emptying the bag.
      Vermiculite is a type of clay mineral that can expand up to 20 times its original size when heated

    • @MoonMan1956
      @MoonMan1956 Před 3 měsíci

      @@mamajan99 Sorry. I just went back and re-read what I wrote. I had it backwards while I do know the difference. I do that a lot. I'm going to claim a senior moment. While vermiculite will expand when exposed to very high heats, that is not why it is used in potting soil. It is used in potting soil to absorb 3-4 times its weight in water and also to attract various plant nutrients such as potassium, magnesium and calcium. These qualities make it useful for propagation and for potting up plants that do best in moist compost, but I'm sure you know this. I also use it because I grow many plants in a hot greenhouse during the summer, and the extra moisture vermiculite can hold goes a long way. My potting soil for my greenhouse is 1/3 mushroom compost, 1/3 peat moss, and 1/3 vermiculite with acidity and organic fertilizer adjustments depending on the particular plant. Finally, I sprinkle some worm castings on top of the soil.

      @@MoonMan1956 I'm going to claim a senior moment. I hear that! I have 5 tomato plants in 5 gal buckets in a spare bedroom with around 200 Campari tomatoes now. They are usually about 1 1/2" when ripe but high in taste. I use inexpensive LED lighting. Epsom Salt for Mag. Calcium Nitrate and a 4/18/38 Chem Gro for tomatoes. Ph Down to around 6 with a similar soil mix. Been doing it for years now. Getting blooms on my outside garden Parks Whoppers now. Been growing tomatoes 70 years now! So...Best senior wishes to you!

    For pots you transplant into, I prefer to split the soil into layers. The top inch or two of potting soil, and the bottom 3 inches get mixed with dead plants in the bottom of an empty pot. The middle layer gets placed around the plant being placed in the pot. The top layer has usually had a lot of nutrients leached out during watering, and the bottom layer usually has a lot of roots in it. The middle layer is usually still fine.
    The dead plants should decompose in the pot, and be indistinguishable from soil the the following year. This method is free, and is the potting equivalent of plowing under the previous years crops.

    Question
    Does it work out cheaper the fact that you have purchased stuff to add to the old compost?
    Or just buy new again ?
    I would like to know how much it cost you
    Personally I get cow manure and after 10months or so we end up with perfect compost for free and it works great
