As a historian, i can confirm this is a 100% accurate. In each instances, the british and the germans would only send in a total of 64 men to battle at a time.

yaykaboom It is represented as over 64, considering each of those 64 people come back to keep fighting. So if everybody dies 20 times in one game, it's almost as if there are 1280 people.

f89ry7 PS4 Verdun isn’t realistic because of it’s server sizes. It’s realistic because of its authentic weaponry, and the fact that it portrayed actual warfare of the time; trench warfare.

I was lucky enough to recently be playing bf1 on river somme as the British. Naturally, I chose a historically accurate loadout for the occasion. Both teams were full. When the game started, it was just a WAVE of British rushing that first objective. Some were also stacked behind tanks. We managed to get that first little farm objective, and started to queue up in those trenches just past it after clearing them. Surprisingly, I had a squad that actually listened when I was squad lead, and I ordered a charge. Apparently a bunch of others had the same idea, and the whole team started running down that hill to the river near the B windmill objective. We knew it was a huge mistake the second we went over the top, because they were very ready. Probably a third of the attack got mowed down before and during the river crossing. A couple of us managed to get bayonet kills, but by then there were only a few of us left. We fell back across the river and the whole game just descended into full trench warfare on B and C. There were tanks trying to cross the river, but usually failing, mortars were firing, and most people had bolt actions or semi autos. The trench warfare continued in a stalemate for most of the game until a squad managed to somehow get all the way to E at the back of the map and we could spawn behind them. Man, that trench warfare on river somme was peak immersion. A true battlefield moment. When the game ended, the whole hill and river banks were just gone to mud from the artillery through the match. It was pretty great.

The possibility of you to stumble upon a Black soldier in ww1 was like 0.01%, so that black hand holding a Leenfield Rifle on the western front is a bit immersion breaking.
As well as the Machine pistols of the assault players was just as rare to find. the only actual full deployment of MP 18 Was in 1918 for the German elite Storm troops and even then they were quite rare, something like 2 out of 5 storm troops owned an MP 18.
What dice should have done was give the player an option to equip a bolt action rifle no matter what class he is, to keep it real. but just the rifle of the faction that soldier is fighting In, for example : if you want to be a British Support/Medic/Assault you can equip a Lee Enfield rifle, but a lee enfield rifle ONLY! No Mosin Natant or Gehwere or whatever. that would be truly immersive.

(warning, A LOOOOOONG post ahead. Sorry. I just love this video, and wanted to voice my opinions.)
Edward McCarter - a soldier for the proudly stubborn British Army - endured an hour of hell on earth.
Not much is known for each individual soldier in the army. most of them are usually forgotten after they died. But him? He's done more work for his country than any officer could dream of.
He has killed somewhere between 20 to 40 men before he was shot dead. a relatively high number for a single soldier, given the conditions that everyone was living in. usually, the kill count was 5 to 10. He surpassed the average.
Normally, the officers would've shrugged off the details. but upon hearing those numbers, they stopped. They turned, and spoke, "how?"
    _ _ _
    (0:13)
    Nobody is expected to survive.
"HOLD THE LINE! THIS SECTOR IS OUR SECTOR!" his NCO bellowed. Edward, shaking from fear and adrenaline, sprinted towards the northern wing of his trenches, before crossing No Man's Land to his frontline trench. From there, things got chaotic quickly.
Gunfire was heard everywhere, from no specific direction, making it impossible to interpret who was shooting who. Edward, following a random soldier he didn’t recognize, made his way across No Man’s Land before taking fire from an aircraft above. It barely missed him.
Edward, feeling enraged that the pilot would indiscriminately attack a single soldier, fired several potshots at the aircraft, achieving nothing. It did dissuade the pilot from circling around again, though.
A shot cracked by his head, deeply startling Edward. He turned to find a german soldier laying atop a muddy mound, his comrades to the right of him as they were shooting someone else. The German fired again, missing Edward.
Edward lined up his rifle and took a shot, landing in between the german’s eyes. A kill. His comrades rushed over to aid him, only to find he was dead. Edward took several more shots, before he ran away.
    _ _ _
    (1:10)
About 5 minutes later, he made it back to his trench lines and found one of his boys mounting a machine gun, spraying away. He kept running past him, and found to his complete shock that the germans were behind them.
Edward took a shot, missing him entirely. He realized that the German was unaware of his presence, and charged him with his bayonet. Before he could get close however, the German was sniped by another soldier from far out. Edward still kept charging, finding another German behind his now fallen comrade. He screamed at the top of his lungs, before the blade penetrated the German’s chest, striking his heart and lungs. He didn’t die immediately. He squirmed on the ground, in agony, before he bled out in the mud.
Edward was shaken, but not frozen. He backed up against a trench wall, before spotting a german medic rushing over with a syringe in his hand. Normally, due to the Geneva Convention, Medics were deemed defenseless. But that didn’t stop the Germans from doing the same to the British Medics. Edward saw it with his own eyes before.
And it didn’t stop him none from stabbing him in the abdomen with a shovel.
    _ _ _
    (1:41)
After that ordeal, he rushed back to the trench line where the machine gunner was, only to find him missing. Dead or missing, it didn’t matter to him. He focused on his own survival.
He took position on the mound and aimed west, finding several soldiers across No Man’s Land rushing in different directions. Some of them were unrecognizable between friend or foe.
He still took shots at them though, not knowing their affiliation. He didn't care. He kept fighting. This lasted for about a minute or so, before he heard the warning bells go off.
“THE ENEMY HAS TAKEN THIS SECTOR!” his NCO yelled. He yelled something else, but Edward couldn’t understand what he was saying due to a new sound pervading the air: screaming. The Germans were advancing forward, bellowing at the top of their lungs as they advanced forward. He could make out one phrase though:
    “HOLD THE LINE!”
Edward sprinted north again, finding an unoccupied turret with a medic next to it, tending the wounded. Edwards mounted the Turret, and began firing.
He found a German medic who did have a gunfire at the British line. This broke the Geneva convention too, as medics were considered defenseless until they opened fire. Edwards did the same.
The German tried to sprint at the trench in front of him, diving for cover, but he tripped on a lone tree stump. He didn’t last five seconds after that.
Edward then went on a killing spree, shooting at every German that came close to him. A lot of them fell.
Edward then noticed a horse… no, not a horse, a man riding a horse. A Cavalryman. Who was sprinting towards Edward.
Edward kept shooting at them. Not the man, but the horse instead. To his amazement, the horse kept moving, taking more bullets than any creature should. He was getting alarmingly close to the trench as Edward kept firing.
Finally though, right when the cavalryman was 10 feet within Edward - sword out - the horse collapsed, tossing the soldier atop of him into the trenches with Edward after he dismounted the turret and shot his rifle at the horse’s right forehoof. He landed on his head, breaking his neck instantly. Edward didn’t even need to execute him. He was already dead.
    _ _ _
    (3:34)
Edward retreated back to the second trench line, after losing the first. He barely survived the retreat; most soldiers still left behind had a high mortality rate, but Edward survived.
The rain then came down. Turning the already desolate landscape into a mud filled hell.
Edward lined his rifle atop of a trench mound after he made it back, and found a german standing near a ruined tank. He had no idea who the tank belonged to initially, but that didn’t matter. It was already destroyed. He pulled the trigger, and down goes another german.
Small explosions erupted all around him, sending shrapnel towards him. Some missed, some did not. He had cuts and scrapes all over his already ruined uniform, and was bleeding slightly. Not a lot to be a concern… for now.
After trading shots with several other soldiers, he sprinted south, and found a field gun emplacement long abandoned. He lacked the knowhow to use the gun properly, but the sandbags around the gun were all he cared about.
Again, he lined his shots and fired at every german he saw. Larger explosions were now ‘sploding all around in front of him, and shots were aimed at his direction, some of them nicking his arms, forcing Edward to retreat away from the gun.
He made his way away from the conflict, giving him a moment to recover his bearings, and dress his wounds. He then sprinted back afterward.
    _ _ _
    (5:10)
A soldier flew over a wall, beyond a concrete bunker. Gunfire whizzed all around him. Screams filled the soundscape.
He couldn’t believe what he saw. But he shook his head and sprinted towards a broken wagon, blimbing atop of it. He traded shots with a few others, killing a handful of Germans, before he ran southwest.
As he ran, he saw a plane flying dangerously low above the ground, it’s engine roaring over the landscape.
He found an abandoned sandbag mound and began to hold his position there, a british flag wildly waving in the distance as soldiers kept fighting there. As he shot in the distance - unsure if it achieved anything - another German Plane fired down on the british position, and dropped several flares, before gracefully flying between to ruined trees.
Edward climbed atop the mound, dangerously exposing himself, as he continued to fire. He then noticed another abandoned machine gun turret, and got to work.

    “Airship! It’s bloody huge!”
The Germans called in reinforcements, unable to push forward after their first breakthrough. The giant behemoth in the sky rained down shells and bombs on the british below, who were terrified beyond belief.
The AA guns in the rear lines didn’t hesitate to open fire on it achieving minimal effect. The foghorn blared overhead, sounding like a giant snoring.
Edward couldn’t help but stare above him. He then spotted muzzle flashes and what he thought were arms popping out of the tiny windows inside the small metallic capsules attached beneath it.
After taking several potshots, he quickly realized the futility of his actions, and retreated back to the rear lines. The Germans were still attacking, despite the casualties.
Unbeknownst to Edwards; as he ran, the Airship was dropping three bombs - heavy bombs, I should point out - on the spot where Edward had just been. Some of the shrapnel had grazed him, but he kept running.
He wasn’t aware, but he had just narrowly escaped death.
As he made it back to a windmill, the warning bells rang. Another successful breakthrough. Edwards looked to the east, finding a little town untouched by the war. A few of the buildings were damaged, but not ruined like the ones in No Man’s Land.
If the Germans broke through this line, they would’ve made it farther than any other army had before.
They had to stop them here, and now.

Intense bloody combat ensued for a little longer before Edward heard a series of large explosions. Not around him, but above him.
He then noticed the airship was on fire from the nose, and the flames were rapidly spreading towards the rear.
Then it began to drop altitude.
For a brief moment, everyone who was fighting stared upward, gazing at the falling airship in wonder and in fear. It dropped ungracefully towards the ruined landscape. It made several loud, metallic groaning sounds, as it landed with a deafening crash.
… If Edward had survived, that would’ve been a moment in his career he would never forget.
After the crash, the gunfire resumed.

After the crash of the airship, smoke and fog filled the sky, pervading the air around Edward with the scent of gunpowder, sulfur, flames, and the copper tint of blood.
The rain made the fog vanish after a few minutes. Once everyone could see clearly, the gunfire seemed to have intensified.
Edward mounted a machine gun turret and began firing away, after narrowly avoiding to pull the trigger on one of his comrades.
Fire erupted in the trench lines in front of him, indicating just how close the Germans were. He sprayed away. He didn’t stay long, and charged forward after felling several Germans. Gas then erupted all around him, suffocating Edward for a moment, filling his lungs with burning air. It terrified him for a moment, even after he pulled on the mask.
Tanks were now rushing forward with the German Infantry, as everything turned into a clusterfuck. Nobody was fighting for the objective anymore; they were fighting to survive.

      (8:42)
NCOs all around Edward were barking orders about ‘taking’ and ‘losing’ objectives, as Edwards ran back to the (now completely ruined) windmill. He stopped after about halfway there, when a bullet whizzed over his head.
He stopped at a sandbag trench mound, another british soldier mounting a machine gun. Edward stayed for a moment. His logic was this: cover the soldier, wait until it’s (relatively) safe, then make a break for it.
That would’ve worked, if it weren’t for the fact that the machine gunner was caught on fire.
He screamed in agony as he rolled on the ground in front of Edward, as explosions rocked all around them. Thankfully for him, due to the rain and mud, it was easy to put out the flames. But it left several burn marks along his body - ones that’ll scar with him forever, if he survives.
Edward followed the machine gunner away from the mound, as they pushed slightly forward in the trench lines. Edwards was slightly behind him.
Then, in a span of a second, a tracer flew above his head, landing on the trench wall near Edward. An explosion soon followed, knocking Edwards back a few feet and leaving his ears ringing. The wall was now ruined. Edward felt like cotton candy was stuffed in his ear holes.
Edward saw the machine gunner lay still afterward, not moving an inch. He was killed instantly, yet somehow, Edward survived.
But he was horrified. Such is the nature of war.

Another five minutes passed, and the british pushed forward. The Germans took too many casualties, and their organization was at an all time low.
After regrouping with his company, Edward kept firing pot shots at the enemy from afar, across No Man’s Land.
One German soldier was within 20 feet of Edward, when he fired a rifle at his chest. It definitely hurt, but it didn’t kill him. When Edward fired again, the gun softly clicked.
The German saw Edward, and turned to face him. Edward, panicking, pulled out his webley revolver, aimed for his head, pulled the lever back, and shot him. This time, he was dead.
Edward pulled back to the trench lines after escaping death for the third time that afternoon, reloading his weapon while on the run (which would’ve been extremely difficult, if it weren’t for the stripper clips.)
Just as he passed a friendly medic while running back, a shot whizzed by his head grazing his right cheek. Another shot was heard as Edward heard a scream. He turned to find the medic dead.
He pulled out his revolver while reloading, and aimed at the walkway where he was, as a german soldier paced forward, his weapon raised. Edwards pulled the trigger, only hitting his right, upper chest. It didn’t achieve anything.
And to Edward’s horror, he was shot in the heart, falling to the ground. The German walked over his corpse.
Edward didn’t die immediately. He bled out after he was shot. No Medic could save him.
His last memory, before he died, was at the german soldier who wiggled and squirmed on the ground before he shared the same fate as Edward.
      Everything turned to black.

      Edward McCarter: 1887 - 1918
Edward McCarter had killed, at the very least, 23 German Soldiers before he fell. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal of Honor for his Bravery, his Grit, and his Sacrifice.
He was told that he wouldn’t survive. That he would die, like millions of others, fighting for his country, and for a country he didn’t come from.
He fought on, with the false hope that he might survive. It didn’t change his ultimate fate, but for his courage and sacrifice, he was awarded.
      Like millions of others.

… It was said that “The Great War” was the war to end all wars.
It ended nothing. Yet it changed everything.
And for the military high command, Edward’s death was just another number on a chart.
To Edward’s family, it was a lifetime of mourning.
To everyone else, he was just a dead soldier. Gone, yes, but not forgotten.

I wrote this because: What Qwark did in this battle did the soldiers - who fought the real thing - justice. Even if just a little. I wanted to capture that experience in a different way.
I ask of you, whoever happens to be reading this, to take a moment to go to a cemetery, a WW1 or WW2 cemetery, and silently thank every single man who died for “The War to end all Wars”.
Because eventually, given on how Humanity is, these names will be eventually forgotten.
Take the time to admire the soldiers’ sacrifice and courage.
      Lest we forget.

Love this video however, I do have a nitpick. I know in game they're all under the "British" but this is really Commonwealth forces. You can tell immediately from the beginning that it is combined forces because there is an Indian troop running in front of you, then later on you see the standard British helmet on another soldier. Other than that you really do capture the feeling of a young man on the front lines, horrified by the constant assault on all of his senses. Subscribed :D
