  • Im a shorttime owner of a Mitsubishi Colt CZ3 from 2008. I noticed the side to side movement of the gear shifter was far from ''new. After doing some research online, i found that this is a common Colt issue.
    Nowhere could i find a detailed video of how to fix this issue. I decided to make a video of my repair. I hope it helps other owners.
    If you got any questions, please leave them in the comments.

    Thanks for the video! Thanks to him I know where the problem with the gear lever of my smart forfour came from.
    I have solved the problem in a much simpler way. Removing the box where the air filter goes, you access that part of the gearbox where you find that problematic axis. Two small holes are made with the help of a drill in the aluminum that covers the axis until it reaches it, which is made of stainless steel. Liquid grease is introduced with a spray through those two little holes and after several days of using the car the lever returns to the center by itself as when it was new.
    It's very easy, you don't have to disassemble anything from the gearbox and the result is perfect.
    I hope it helps and thanks again for the video.

    A very elegant solution but quite laborious. I had the same problem and cured it by working the pivot shaft back and forth with a long screwdriver after using a lot of WD40 to loosen the binding parts. Once free, I dripped a little engine oil on the binding surfaces and it was fine again - for several years until I sold the car. Worth trying before taking the mechanism apart.

    Hello, thanks for that, I have same problem, car has been sat for 9 months, went to get it back on the road and found gearshifter very hard left to right
    Dismantling it will take too much of my brainpower so I'm going to use plenty of WD40, because I'm going to sell the car and I don't have time to do what you did, it was very good but my time is limited, well done, keep up the good work 👌🏽👍🏽

    Nice one; in reply to Bojan this is the issue 1st an reverse are the extremities of the movemnt of the lever but also the colt is known for being a bit clunky into reverse especially when cold this is why your grinding the gears just let it warm up a bit and try reverse then.

    removal of air inlet - easy job - two clips , and left below you see the pivot . then used graphite maintenance spray , with long tube , on pivot and also sprayed around in same region . it helped a lot ,

    Just bought a 2005 cz3 1.1 L colt, everythign runs great, 125,000 km. only flaw is this. going to try to lube first of not will follow intructions. Great video! i found this and knowign it was an easy fix decided to but the czr. dealer was asking 1,790 euro so knowing this was an easy fix i felt confident buying. THANK YOU!

    I'm from the school of spray lots of lubricant on anything that moves but is stiff before you start taking things apart. I found that by putting it into first gear then into reverse it went in easier, that said if you put it into reverse when it's cold and release the clutch slowly it clunks in without grinding. Nothing to do with the clutch as they all do it.

    Spray some graphite loaded maintenance spray on the gearbox linkages under the airbox in the engine bay and your gearstick will have never been so slick.

    Hi! Thanks for the video. I have a question tho. The gear shifter feels very stiff in my car when putting it into 1st gear. You really have to force it sometimes. It's also often difficult to put it in reverse and you can sometimes hear the gears grinding. Will this help the issue or is it the clutch or gearbox itself that's the problem? The rest of the gears are fine.

    • @twowheels90
      @twowheels90  Před 4 lety

      Hi, I don't think his has a relation with the fix in the video. Most likely the box itself.

    • @johanstrom8473
      @johanstrom8473 Před 2 lety +3

      For me it's second gear that's stiff, you really have to fight it sometimes especially when downshifting. Still no idea why really.
      I had/have the grinding on reverse as well but this is just because of how gearboxes in general work. After starting the engine, if you move the lever to first gear (no need to release clutch) then put it in reverse then it will never grind.
      This happens because when you put the gearbox into neutral with the clutch released all the shafts in the gearbox are spinning (even though none of them are connected to the output shaft), so by engaging the first gear stops all the motion of the gearbox internal shafts so you can engage reverse with all the parts at rest.

    What about sinking in a paraffin bath then working with oil?? Or maybe release shift linkage and spray WD-40 Fast Release Penetrant work it?

    Hello
    This might be a silly question, but how can you take off the tip of the gear stick, you KNOW the knob with 1,2,3,4,5, R on it.
    Mine turns loosely around, and I don't want to damage it by just snapping it off.
    Thanks

    really a great solution, I this problem on the Smart Forfour 1.1 of 2005. can you kindly give us some more information? from the video the diameter of 13.88mm is clear, do you remember the measurement of the bushing width? and the internal diameter of the bush? it would be very useful as information. thank you very much.
    the Smart Forfour 2005 has the same gearbox.in the video I seem to understand that the bush positioned on the lathe is the original one, but I'm going crazy on the net to find this bush. can you help me find it? I don't know, with a link or a product code

    • @twowheels90
      @twowheels90  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi, I don't recall the dimensions of the bushing. It's not a part you can purchase separate from mitsubishi unfortunately...
      I recommend drilling out the original one and reuse it. Even without a lathe you should be able to put a internal hex bolt through the bushing. Good luck!
