Nepal has banned TikTok in the country. Announcing the move on November 13, 2023, the government said the popular Chinese social media app was disrupting “social harmony”. It’s the latest country to impose a ban on the app. Critics said the move would stifle freedom of expression.

Why is Tiktok important for Nepal?
Tiktok is the fastest flow of information in Nepal.
I still remember a statement when our ex prime minister told that "He knew about the earthquake in Nepal when the prime minister of foreign nations calls him to give condolences of the tragic event in 2015".
All the media houses are under the control of big political parties and there is no space for independent candidate. Also, people don't watch TV or read newspaper in Nepal nowadays. So, it's hard for big political parties to manipulate people. Many independent candidates won the election this year and they were promoted through tiktok. And these big political parties has feared that they will lost all the election next time.
Moreover, as tiktok is fastest source of information, many corruption scandal of politicians were exposed and people know about it through tiktok. It was quite difficult for them to control the news.
The protest against government has started in Tiktok and demand to bring back Monarchy has threatened the politicians and worried about their government. That's why, they completely ban the tiktok.

Notice how SCMP uses the word 'ban' when certain countries do it, but 'censor' when other countries do something similar. The word censor has a more negative connotation and they reserve it for the countries they don't like whereas ban is more neutral. Also they provide a government's stated reasons for the ban without challenging it, but would never do that for other countries

for anyone who is confused about the ban, the reason is because of change in social revolution shared through Tiktok which could harm the country. and why not other apps? because its easier to reach and quicker to spread their agenda compared to other platforms where its regulated. I'm not a user of TikTok (or 抖音), but generally I think it's a bad idea to ban social media apps, whether they are TikTok, X, or Facebook or any other platform. It doesn't matter that TikTok is mostly used for silly dances, or that X and Facebook are sometimes used to make hateful or political statements. These apps help a large number of people to make a living, they help spread ideas around the world, and while they may sometimes be considered 'harmful to society', these so-called harms should be resolved through even more conversation and debate, not through bans.

Are you really suggesting you can make an important political statement under a minute without it being unauthentic? It’s already bad enough with CZcams and Facebook respectively coming In with their “shorts” and “reels”. If Tik Tok was banned, nothing of value would be lost.

Be like me. I'm completely chill because i don't use tiktok or Instagram or Facebook even tho i have Facebook account and I'm teenager.
I know what kind of harm it can cost that's why i don't smoke or drink or do drugs unlike my friends and most of guys around my age.
I don't waste money on those worthless things i instead used my parents money to fill my stomach 😊 eating is more satisfying than drinking alcohol or smoking or doing drugs.
Through out my school days i have offered by many friends or guys to smoke or drink to enjoy but i always refused believing that not doing any of those stuff is much cooler 😎

All religions aim to promote peace and harmony, yet religions are more often than not being used as excuse to oppress people, divide the people, or wage war. It doesn't mean religions are the cause of violence, but rather, it is the material incentives that drive humans to violence. Realize this truth, find common ground with your fellow human beings, and reject the idealist paintings of your religious populist politicians.
