Nepal has banned TikTok in the country. Announcing the move on November 13, 2023, the government said the popular Chinese social media app was disrupting “social harmony”. It’s the latest country to impose a ban on the app. Critics said the move would stifle freedom of expression.

Odd that SCMP doesn't mention that most critics think it was banned as people on the app were criticizing the government.

You mean like how your employer blocked CZcams, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin, etc. in Mainland China because they cannot censor it like they can with Douyin and Weibo? CCP propaganda wumao hiding his face like a coward.
Yep. There is an increase use of tiktok by anti-government protesters hence they probably thought it is easier to ban tiktok than facebook etc. since they can use the Western rationale as cover. While if they ban facebook etc. they will get western backlash etc.
Kind of based of users to make critically punching political statements in under a minute. Something that the structure of Tik Tok is trying to hinder.
As if Tiktok is such a free platform back home in China. where Chinese can criticise own government 😆
Nepal bans Tik Tok, but allows Facebook, Instagram and CZcams because they encourage 'social harmony'. 😂
Chinese can not be trusted 😂

Why is Tiktok important for Nepal?
Tiktok is the fastest flow of information in Nepal.
I still remember a statement when our ex prime minister told that "He knew about the earthquake in Nepal when the prime minister of foreign nations calls him to give condolences of the tragic event in 2015".
All the media houses are under the control of big political parties and there is no space for independent candidate. Also, people don't watch TV or read newspaper in Nepal nowadays. So, it's hard for big political parties to manipulate people. Many independent candidates won the election this year and they were promoted through tiktok. And these big political parties has feared that they will lost all the election next time.
Moreover, as tiktok is fastest source of information, many corruption scandal of politicians were exposed and people know about it through tiktok. It was quite difficult for them to control the news.
The protest against government has started in Tiktok and demand to bring back Monarchy has threatened the politicians and worried about their government. That's why, they completely ban the tiktok.
tiktok is the only platform in Nepal which both youngsters and old people use. Alternative like Facebook is not very popular among youngsters and Insta is not popular among old people. @@applecutter5723
This needs to be said🔥 People voices are being shut down
Tbh, I don’t need TikTok at all. I just want to watch CZcams
CZcams just copies everything from TikTok and Instagram
Pretty much. They can ban anything including Google and I'd just go use an alternative but banning CZcams is a step too far.😅
Same. CZcams is far more important
@@BUKKAKE2 CZcams just copies everything from TikTok, Facebook, Instagram. And CZcams cannot post photos, text messages, add friends, tag, or sell products like TikTok or Instagram. And people use TikTok or Facebook accounts to log into video games. You cannot sign in to video games with a CZcams account

@@CoolNumber1tiktok algo is superior compare to youtube short
Haha 😆, also the FB and others social media haha
What salute to Nepal? Do you think Nepal is banning Tiktok because it is anti-China? We literally have Maoist PM. The ban was decided because of a guy who was using the platform to challenge the govt lol.
What is the point of banning TikTok? It is such a totalitarian move. I mean, Nepal, which is a tourism-based country, is also going to lose so much because without TikTok, they are going to lose almost all of their tourism promotions. Such an ill-advised decision by their government.
Well its banned in China and we can't use it here in HK either
India did something similar and it had no effect on them, nepal will be fine.
@@willsmith39ironically, china owns tiktok. Yet they wont allow their own people to use a domestically produced product.
VPN usage is skyrocketed in my India since the ban of tiktok because we can't live without tiktok we love tiktok
@@GorillaWithACellphonekinda wrong there, there is no proof that china 'owns' tiktok. Tiktok's parent company is a chinese company, but that doesn't mean it is owned by china. China allows the chinese version of tiktok, douyin
Great decision for Nepal..Need more people to get off their phone addiction..
Doesn't do much cuz CZcams shorts and IG reels exist
You know they'll just move to another app and this now creates a domino effect for banning more apps now right?
This is completely wong as stated in 2:12 completely banning something in the name of regulation is absurd. This ban was more likely to be related to empowering mainstream media as social media was gaining too much influence. p.s I don't use tik tok
I wouldn’t say phone addiction. That should be applied for heavy users.
as much as I hate tiktok (don't even have the app), people should be allow to have access to it, it's basic freedom. Especially for people who invested in social media and make their livelihood through it, doing advertisement, engagement with their customers etc. That's not really fair to take it away.
Nowadays, it is no brainer that Nepal has too late to ban Tik-Tok as the global environment has changed radically. All users are willingly to be vetted by these social media like Facebook, Tik-Tok and Instagram unless you are disconnected from these influential social media or so-called capitalisms. After all, no harm done and the choice is yours....
I don’t use TikTok, but why outright ban it?
These is a person said its was banned because many people use it to criticise goverment.
Because little kids did bad trends to get views

Notice how SCMP uses the word 'ban' when certain countries do it, but 'censor' when other countries do something similar. The word censor has a more negative connotation and they reserve it for the countries they don't like whereas ban is more neutral. Also they provide a government's stated reasons for the ban without challenging it, but would never do that for other countries
Probably a translation problem
While VPN may allow access to view; I doubt it will access a local upload and if it’s banned you cannot collect an income. I feel bad for the content creator - if she could relocate - she’s got a winning recipe for an income.
for anyone who is confused about the ban, the reason is because of change in social revolution shared through Tiktok which could harm the country. and why not other apps? because its easier to reach and quicker to spread their agenda compared to other platforms where its regulated. Tiktok barely has any regulation
Kudos to Nepal.
Cant they use vpn to ignore the ban
in all country they should ban tiktok, facebook, instagram, twitter even youtube shorts.

Funny how they not ban only fans . Twitter for reason disturbing social harmony n scam 😂😂😂
It is so true, also Facebook became toxic from last few years
Sad, Don't Play With The Emotions.❤️
I support an international ban on TIKTOK since China banned FaceBook and other social media apps from other countries. Fair market access with no censorship or get banned from other countries.
But isnt your country suppose to be 'democratic'? Avid supporter of freedom, free speech and no censorship? 😂

I'm not a user of TikTok (or 抖音), but generally I think it's a bad idea to ban social media apps, whether they are TikTok, X, or Facebook or any other platform. It doesn't matter that TikTok is mostly used for silly dances, or that X and Facebook are sometimes used to make hateful or political statements. These apps help a large number of people to make a living, they help spread ideas around the world, and while they may sometimes be considered 'harmful to society', these so-called harms should be resolved through even more conversation and debate, not through bans.
😂, tell that to China. If one country can ban something for whatever reason, the same right goes to everyone else.
Meanwhile China banned all foreign apps but wants world to you their apps 😂😂
@@varunshivan9569China is a dictatorship, I don't think we should be following their rules when it comes to free speech
@@ajaysharma2535You can make Facebook less anti China😅
I disagree. Having like 15 seconds of video time, is a poor example of expression or speech and that’s what Tik Tok is trying to promote. Are you really suggesting you can make an important political statement under a minute without it being unauthentic? It’s already bad enough with CZcams and Facebook respectively coming In with their “shorts” and “reels”. If Tik Tok was banned, nothing of value would be lost.
Use a VPN
This is also a lesson to be learned, never really depend on a platform or anything for your sole business income.
yes i agree, we all depends on social media platform to boost our business, even i, but remember, even if you are a CZcamsr, Tiktokers, or anything, those platform can stop you from generating any income in just a matter of days.
I've seen so many people suddenly have zero income because Tiktok shop was closed and all that.
If china can ban hundreds of apps, other countries can also ban chinese apps.

All religions aim to promote peace and harmony, yet religions are more often than not being used as excuse to oppress people, divide the people, or wage war. It doesn't mean religions are the cause of violence, but rather, it is the material incentives that drive humans to violence.
