  • It's no secret that Dyson vacuums are expensive junk that just doesnt last. Sometimes the owner keeps them really clean and taken care of, and thet still break! That's what this one has done. We're going to try in vain to troubleshoot it, then just fit a used working motor... Let's have a look!

Ah, the Dyson Ray Gun. Gave mine to my Mum as her old old old Dyson handheld became more and more useless, and her DC01 has plastic fatigue and is slowly crumbling, and in the meantime, her 1967 Hoover Junior 1346 (mk 2) works as well as the day it was made.

when i was a kid I would fix our hoover when it needed it, once every couple of years it would throw that rubber drive belt, and once I replaced the impeller because it sucked up a coin or something and broke it... completely simple, just a screwdriver and less than 5 minutes by a teenager... parts cost pennies and were in every hardware store in town...

I would say corded dysons from 7-10 years ago were the best. I never cared for cordless versions.

Im glad that we have really good consumer protection laws here in Australia, depending on the circumstances dyson would have had to replace of repair it or give you a refund

I have two dead v11s that died and they are barely used. Dysons are such junk. I’m going to take the most recent failure apart and see what broke.

hi, that sponge looking kind of thing, that you pulled out from above the motor, that sits inside the bit with holes that sticks up into the purple filter, does it break down over time due to age...? is it a problem...? can't understand what its function is, what does it do...?
my wife keeps finding little bits of what looks like fragments of fine black plastic screen in the filter... and whatever is going on, it seems to make the filter light come on more frequently...
so she's of course after me to "buy a new one"... i'm sure the dyson repair center will just tell me to buy a new motor assembly... do i really need to do anything...?
    thanks....!

It's probably more annoying than a problem, it's just there to diffuse the exhaust air and slow it down as it exits the machine. Cheap on ebay (usually with an spare housing) or coarse thin sheet aquarium filter would work (or leave it removed... 😂)

Another sad broken cordless Dyson. I was actually considering buying one, but I went with the Miele Triflex HX1 with traditional motor and metal fan. It better hold up or it will be my first and last cordless vacuum 🥵😁 At least it's made in Germany.

I've got one, bought it in 2019 for $800 AUD. It doesn't have much suction because you have to use it on the medium power setting to get usable battery life out of it (~15 minutes). It makes up for the lack of suction by using the motorhead brushes to lift the dirt and dust. So instead of using suction to clean, it uses the rotating brushes. The suction is just to move the dust up the pipe and into the canister so it has somewhere to go. It cleans fine, well even. I have carpet and tile and use a different motorhead for each, and they work fine and good. However there are myriad issues that would prevent me from recommending it, I could write a wall of text but can't be bothered. To sum it up though, reliability issues with battery & motorheads, filters getting smelly. Can't point the unit upwards otherwise dust backflows and filter gets instacaked with thick layer of dust. Needs deep clean every few months with a 2nd vacuum cleaner to get the dust out of these thin channels where it all builds up.
To finish on a positive though, I do like the convenience of it, and it doesn't stink up the room after using it. In the video he says he soaks the filter in soapy water and scrubs it, and I'm pretty sure that would damage the filter fibers and no longer be HEPA certified, thus stinking up the room after use.

@@Animal_lives_matter I just bought a V8 recently. They're on eBay and I got a good price but it seems Dyson are playing around with the pricing with various sales at different rates to generate sales. Anyway, it's amazing the amount of dust it pulls up but, like you say, it's the motorhead that's doing that. The suction is still very strong but not sure how long that will last. The dust canisters are very small. About a quarter the size of the Dyson Ball I had previously and the Sansui I still have. But the Sansui is getting weak suction now and I can't find filters for it.
I've opened up the motorhead twice now and each time there was dust inside it. Not sure where it is getting in but cleaning it is a problem. For the battery, it takes too long to charge and doesn't last very long. Been looking at battery replacements on eBay for Ozito batteries. I have a few 4Ah batteries and they charge quickly. The adapters are a bit pricey but I'll see.
Overall, I think they are over-engineered and badly designed. Noticed this with the Dyson Ball. Complicated to take apart or assemble. The Sansui is a lot easier. Can take the whole dust canister apart with just some hand force. Simpler to remove and install it back too. Unfortunately, it's corded and the cord is very short. Plus it overheats on thick carpets.

Cleans OK. My V8 anyway. Wasn't impressed with the Dyson Ball. They are badly designed, though. Overly complicated to open the dust canister.

Yeah the V8 is better value than the V10, and I think I could see myself possibly endorsing the V8 when it's on sale for a discount. The V10 isn't that much better other than having a bigger bin but honestly it's still pretty small and leaving dust in it during storage makes the filter smell so I want to empty it after every use anyway.
Another annoying thing is when you get down to 1 bar of battery life you don't know how long that 1 bar is going to last whereas on the next model they added a numeric timer so you could see exactly how many seconds you had left and whether that gives you enough time to clean the next room - having it cut out half way through a room is annoying.

@@Animal_lives_matter Yes, those are good points. I got mine for $425. It was reduced to $450 but eBay had a promo code that took another $25 off the price. Currently, they're $499 (reduced from $799). And if you're with eBay+ (I'm not, I think it's a scam) you can get it with another $124 off.
So that's below $400. Not bad.
But I'm not too impressed with it. Like I said elsewhere, they're over-engineered and poorly designed. I can see lots of things potentially breaking. Some of the connections already feel loose.
The friction-fit style of connections don't appear to have that problem. I've kept the wand and one of the brushes from an old Nilfisk vac. They fit perfectly with the Sansui I've got and still work great.
BTW, do you know if you can get adapters for them to fit the Dyson connections? I would love to use the Nilfisk dust brush over the silly Dyson one. I looked on eBay but didn't find anything that might work.
