It is of Afrikan Origin, the folk that did it in TT is from Afrika and they carried their cultural memory with them..
Just like the other places it's in Afrikan tradition to celebrate change..
Brazil for e.g. dates back to 18th Century..
The traditions even go back as far as 5,000 yrs ago in Afrika believe it or not..

It is incorrect!!! Various carnivals have been in Jamaica way before then, for example for Ashura (an originally Shia Muslim event that now has other faiths) and also for Junkanoo which is from the 1800s, if not earlier. You can literally see pictures of the Shia canival from even the 1920s.

@@user-dx5mg9by9y Like said debating someone who's knows little about Caribbean carnivals is useless
when I talk figures its how many person plays or participates at carnivals ; in Jamaica parade there were only 3 mas bands on parade that not that large, one big mas band in Trinidad carnival has more than 4000 participants which the participants are 600.000 thought out the island and is arguably the 3rd or 4th largest in the World only behind Rio in Brazil and Notting Hill carnival in Britain ,never expect Jamaica reaching those huge figures as carnival not like by every Jamaicans.

Wow! Jamaicans and Trinidadians! See the confusion caused with these events. How can we talk about righteousness in our reggae music that people love and then be a part and f this. We need to find a way to celebrate our culture with our clothes on. Before we were Jamaicans and trinidadians we were hebrews. Let’s let this stuff go and be a light to the gentiles.

@@kirtmckenzie6121The peoples of the old African kingdoms and nations (called tribes by europeans) walked the earth in loin clothes, grass skirts and mostly nude, a mere 100 years ago. Some Africans still do. Until white colonizers came and shattered black/African innocence. Told black people through the Bible and Koran that they were naked, that they were sinners. So Africans started to dress in clothes, but continued to sin immeasurably beneath all those tons of clothes. However Caribbeans have freed themselves, gone back to the old time days. Don't hide nothing. Maybe you need to stop hiding too.

A mere 100 years ago people of the various African kingdoms (called tribes by Europeans) walked in loinclothes, grass skirts and mostly nude. Some still do. Until the white slavers, Arab slavers and colonizers told them through the Bible and Koran that they were sinners and must put on clothes. So Africans did put on clothes. However they continued to sin exceedingly wicked beneath those tons of European, Arab and yes African inspired clothes (note the continued political, economic and spiritual struggles of Africa). Caribbeans know better than to follow that colonizer nonsense. Better to throw off the colonizer's clothes, free yourself and address your deeds head on, even if for a day.

😂😂😂 You may have a point. Even the Reggae gospel concerts in Jamaica get a much bigger audience. We are living in serious times… people are seeking God now; not this. Jamaica will always be a Christian country… We are a rebellious, stubborn, and unruly people, like the Israelites, but we fear God. Most of us are not interested in walking around in the streets showing our naked behinds. They can find that in Trinidad.

What you see from afar isn't the total reality. In Trinidad and Tobago there are bands for everyone choices & all ages. There are sailor bands, historical, fully clothes beautiful creative bands & children bands which are out of this world. However, what sells & marketed internationally are the skimpy costumes of the young and free-spirited at heart. This brings in the foreigners & the much needed USD. This variety is what I think is lacking here. Guess the youths just want to have fun & abandonment from the pressures of life 🤔😅😊
