  • Vocal Coach Reacts To Skid Row - Sebastian Bach - I Remember You - Live - Ken Tamplin
Today we’re taking it back to the 80s with heavy metal band Skid Row.
Word is that frontman Sebastian Bach was spotted singing at rock photographer Mark Weiss's wedding by Jon Bon Jovi's parents who suggested that he try out for their son's friend's (Dave Sabo) band.
Their first two albums were a HUGE success and by 1996 the band had sold 20 million albums worldwide.
Following disagreements over musical material, Bach was fired from the band in 1996 but multiple sources have also indicated that he had left the band due to the rest of the group believing they should not play as an opening act for KISS. The rift between Bach and the other band members subsequently led to his leaving Skid Row.
The song “I Remember You” was a power ballad written by bandmates Rachel Bolan and Dave "the Snake" Sabo. It reached number six on the US Billboard Hot 100 and in a 2007 interview, Sebastian Bach commented, "'I Remember You' was the #1 prom song in the United States of America in the year 1990”.
After Skid Row replaced Bach with new lead singer Johnny Solinger, they recorded a second version of the song in 2003 entitled "I Remember You Two."
Today I’ll be reacting to a live performance of Sebastian’s version, hope you enjoy it!

I always like Sabastians tone but he always struggled live to get the same effect. His lifestyle had a lot to do with it. This is during a time when there was not a lot of vocal coaches helping out. They would have been too proud to ask for help or stoned I should say. Also He set the bar really high on these lp's to produce this live night after night especially with drugs and alcohol playing a factor made it damn near impossible. I was a singer during this time and played in many bands and never did the drugs and alcohol and I can still sing all the things I did 30 yrs ago and you can tell the same is with Ken that's why he can do what he does and makes it look effortless. Also way too much Chorus on this live performance. delay and reverb would have been ok by itself but that chorus is over the top. When you perform these types of songs with this much difficulty you must pace yourself through your set Hydrate is so important. water not Jack, vodka, Jim Beem, You can tell that Sebastian trashed his voice by listening to him today. The guy could sing but didn't know how to sing correctly and now his voice has suffered.

Couple of points, if I may. One, in the video Skid Row are classed as an LA band, when in fact they were from New Jersey. Sebastian being Canadian. Minor point. Second, Sebastian has had too much vocal training these days and has lost the edge from his voice. It isn't as heartfelt as it was and the vibrato sounds false, it was the fact that it drew you in that was so great. Since he did the West End stuff it sounds fake. I was at that Wembley gig on 31 August 1991 along with upwards of 80,000 others, and I can promise you not one person there cared one bit that he was a bit pitchy.... I think he was actually 19 or so at the time and opening for Guns n' Roses at their prime and the peak if their career - and they totally stole the night away from Axl. I have seen him both on and off form, with Skid Row and solo,, and he is a showman. Scoff on CZcams but in the moment when you're watching it live it doesn't matter

He sang his throat out for all of us. That's all that really matters when you think about it. Kind of like Steven Perry. He helped Millions maybe billions of people make love for decades, then he gets throat cancer. These guys sacrificed every ounce of everything they ever had to make us feel it. Sebastian Bach is an incredible frontman and entertainer. And his attitude is still phenomenal I don't care what anybody thinks. He still has spirit, and it's all that matters. Truly a legend of the time.

He talks about this on Jonsey's Jukebox Radio interview- its here on youtube. He said his family was calling from south america crying lol. He took care of his mom until she passed, then his life partner passed away from a brain tumor (I think?) & he made her a promise to start singing again & is back at it now...

Ken, I know you are a professional, but in Sebastian's defense...I heard him sing this song live when he was touring with Bon Jovi. It was perfect and the whole stadium was mesmerized. Needless to say, I remembered it! I still watch this concert all the time on You Tube and am still mesmerized by him even though this song wasn't quite up to par, the Band put on a great show and I can overlook a tired voice. I still can't get over his performance of "Monkey Business"! One for the history books! I wish we had Front men and Bands like the old days! Great times and memories! 😉

Amazing! Then again a few years ago. He's not what he used to be, but not too many people can compete. Even to this day. Sebastian does use a lot of echo, but I ask the KJ to turn the echo up for me at karaoke, so I can't blame him there! 😂 lol.

I was at that gig as a fresh faced 15 year old kid, and Seb ran himself ragged across the stage for the full set, so much energy. The fact that he'd run out of gas a little by then really wasn't surprising. Rock n roll isn't all about perfect notes. It would be dull if it was.

I really like Ken and he's a great singer but I don't believe he gave the video a fair assessment honestly. I know tricks can be done in the studio with all the million dollar equipment BUT you've got to give props to Sebastian for the studio recordings he did on the first 2 albums. All the other bands at the time had access to some studio wizardry also but none of the other singers could even come close to Sebastian as far as raw talent and his range and stamina. I know this video was a live performance but you don't know if he played 20 or so shows that month, played 3 or 4 nights in a row, maybe he had a slightly off day or just maybe he couldn't hear his sound in his monitors very well. You never know live what they might be dealing with. That's why I prefer to judge them mostly on their studio work. It doesn't matter that he had "a little help" from studio equipment because ALL the band's had a little help from studio equipment so to me that makes it an even playing field basically. The studio is where you hear them at their absolute best possible. I've heard Baz live 2 times and he was great. I've heard a lot of other singers live also and they had hit and miss spots in their performance too. You've got to realize that anybody that sings like Baz, with 110% everything they've got is going to have a couple dips in their performance from time to time. If you sing like Bob Dylan then you could throw down a perfect performance everytime. When you sing with all you've got like Baz then it's easier to have those dips when you're maxing out your voice constantly but thats exactly what fans like me enjoy. Baz really raised the bar when he hit the scene. Too bad that "scene" was very short lived after Skid Row came out. I think Skid Row and Warrant were about the last couple of "hair metal" bands that were big time.

Ken, thanks for sharing the quick testimony at the end of the video. I came up during the eighties and nineties, thoroughly enjoying rock music. When I turned 18, I auditioned for a band and was chosen to be lead singer. After about a year, I became born again and truly struggled with the messages and lifestyle promotion in many songs. After one band split, I tried with a few others, but I could never escape the conviction on my heart for singing inglorious lyrics. Now, I am fifty plus and still enjoy singing with the stereo or at an occasional karaoke. Friends and strangers alike, compliment my ability and it is fun to ring true on a high note or special song. I am nowhere your level, but I appreciate your videos which teach this old dog new techniques. Thanks and keep sharing your talents with us. From one brother in the Lord Jesus Christ to another, peace and blessings.

So, while we're on that subject, could you please do a "Vocal Coach Reacts" to Tesla's lead singer, Jeff Keith, preferably this performance: czcams.com/video/7m7FpzOxbkQ/video.html

Loving your reactions! You just got a new subscriber. I saw Sebastian Bach in concert 2 years ago. Honestly, he sounded better 2 years ago at the show I went to than he did here. Gregg Allman had passed away the night before I saw Sebastian in concert. During the concert, Sebastian says that he’s got someone he wants to bring out. Next thing you know, Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers walks on to the stage during the show, sits at the drum set, and Sebastian says he wants to pay tribute to the late Gregg Allman. They played “Whipping Post” and absolutely rocked it. One of the coolest concert moments I’ve experienced.

I like Ken's channel, but have to say, Sebastian brought some of the best rock to our ears and minds. The concert he reviewed was actually pretty good (pretty sure it was Wembley ). I disagree with his criticism of Sebastian, but still like his channel overall. But Bach was one of the better vocalists to come out of the 80's rock scene...and that era is full of what we now know as LEGENDS!
Ken, you should review his 18 and Life performance for this same concert. He blew the crowds ears off with his performance.

Ken. Love the honesty and analysis here. As someone who gigged with them (minus Sebastian), I can vouch about Scotti Hill's abilities as well. He's a beast and a "band" player, indeed. You're a phenomenal vocalist and coach yourself! Dude, 2 things that caught me... The ending wasn't a mistake. He was singing Tesla's "Love Song" ending over the chords, as a homage to their pals in Tesla. ;) Also, if you rewind back, he did hit that big note at the end (although it got quivery some), but when you screamed the same note, it drowned it out on playback, bro. Listen again? Great review and Reaction video. Keep up the great work!

Great and honest critique of Sebastian & #SkidRow & the crazyass scene that we were all in back then Ken!! 👍😎
And of Course my band WANTED didn't make SKID ROW level & I'm grateful we didn't! Although, I can totally relate to all the Hollywood Sunsetstrip ego stuff too! Especially because we lived in Motley Crue's old apartment right up on Clark Street 205 by the Whiskey A Go Go after they left the next 4 years & we were working our asses off trying to get that "Mighty Record Deal" for sure!! Hahaha! 😂 But in all seriousness Ken, it got really really dark and my convictions were probably similar to yours. Being who I am, I wasn't going to sell my soul for Roc n Roll! It's Not what God had in store for me & I accepted that. But also now looking back over 30 years...those sure were some superfun, awesome, crazy good times though & we all got to live it to the fullest, survived to talk about it & what WE ALL (signed & unsigned bands both) did & created back in the 80's & early 90's "Hairbands Era" how spectacular Rock n Roll music will never ever be the same!!!
Long live that "Decade of Decadence" hahahehe 😂 &...

It’s quite remarkable how he was able to accomplish what he did in the studio. Yes, his live performances were hit and miss, but his studio singing is incredible, very few male singers could pull off what he did during that era with what they had to work with as far as vocal training and coaching. There are some of his live performances that are excellent, although I’m not sure if he ever made the same effort during a live performance that did in the studio. His distortion technique is also impressive as he can sing with a lot of grit, while suffering few ill effects, although age is starting to catch up to him. Nice video Ken.

Great video, and I can't wait to see more on this era of music. I grew up in the 80s, and all of these bands in many ways established the music of my lifetime. I listen to a lot of different things now, however 80s rock/metal will always hold a special place for me. I begged my parents to buy me a cheap guitar in 1984 after hearing George Lynch absolutely shred on the Tooth and Nail album (and they did). Sitting here 35 years later, I'm looking at a Lynch ESP Kamikaze sitting over the in the corner as I type this. That decade certainly had a lasting impression. While the individual performances of members of these bands can certainly be reproduced, the whole was definitely more than the sum of the parts. I doubt we'll ever see an era of rock stars again like we did in the 1980s. I'll bet you've got stories Ken, I would LOVE to hear you kick back and just talk about how it was back then. I realize it wouldn't fit your channel very well, but I know I'd be glued to the screen and I'm sure others would too.

Ken, I loved this reaction. ❤️ You're always honest & genuine & as you say you "call a spade, a spade" & that's refreshing. BUT, I gotta address your closing statement. I got mad respect that you decided early on that your moral standards & beliefs were more important to you than fame & the kind of lifestyle you knew you would witness & be subjected to. Not saying you would have succumbed to it, but it's hard to be around that kind of stuff & not be affected. My husband counseled with a church leader & was told the 3 career choices that were most devastating to marriages, families & moral temptation are: Military, Law Enforcement & the entertainment industry. My husband was in the marine corp for over 8 years, was a correctional officer for 21. We have been married almost 41 years. He (we) have been the anomalies in these careers. Our religious beliefs have carried us through, but we have seen (figuratively) many marriages & families crumble & it is heartbreaking. So I commend you on your strength, in a rambling kinda way.

The fact that you missed that you missed that makes it a bit hard to take your critique of one of the greatest singers of all time seriously. Sure, he was a bit pitchy here and there. It was live, no auto tune and he was probably dead tired (and he'd probably partied way too hard). Very, very few people could have done what he did under the same circumstances. IMO he was definitely worthy of worship. He had an encredible voice, had great stage presence (and he was hot as Hell!!!! )
